I had no idea about this game, but it does look like my type of game. I have kids and don’t really want to spend 50 hrs into a game before I get something out of it. It’s nice to just have something that I can relax and play for an hour or two and feel like I’ve done something.
Facts. Just got it and love that its more focused. So many people have tried crapping on it before even playing it. Been gaming 3yrs now and the community has definitely gotten more toxic since I started

Same here. I have a hectic job too that sees me working away a fair bit, took me over a year to complete the Witcher 3 and the same with RDR2. The idea of a short game with good progression is something a lot of people want.
Immortals of Aveum just has a launch date with so many packed games like baldurs gate and starfield around it that it is pretty hard to notice, let alone spend actual money and time playing the game. I really hope it will somehow find some recognition.

I like the idea of this game! Probably more a $40 pricetag than full AAA. Still kinda reminds me of Heretic from the 90s. Would LOVE to see a HEXEN remaster, remake, spiritual successor...something.

Been playing Amid Evil, which is an Indy game on Steam on sale right now for 10 bucks and it basically feels like Hexen or Heretic. A lot of the weapons feel straight out of Hexen
I find it weird that a company created a game with a new IP with no store, MTX and "always on" and people are complaining that is should be discounted.

Remnant 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Starfield, Armored Core 6. This game totally flew under my radar with the crazy release of games lately.
This is better than almost all of those games. Definitely get this game.

@@ur5484 I don't. I've played most of them. Starfield is amazing as it's basically Fallout in space, at getting to use space ships.... so that's the one that I would say it right there with it. But Immortals is amazing.
It feels like a mix of Doom Eternal, Borderlands, Bioshock Infinite, and Skyrim.

You're not the only dinosaur Jake, we genuinely need shorter, simpler, fun games instead of feature bloated mess.
It's unfortunate this game appears unoptimized. The requirements were quietly updated and I knew immediately red flag. No linear game should need an RX 5700 XT and R7 3700X for 60FPS. ON LOW SETTINGS. It's not hardware that's out of my reach. I have those specs but 60FPS on low settings makes me think the game will have dips where the FPS drops to 45-50 FPS. Even Hogwarts Legacy wasn't this bad.

Hey Jake. I've been watching Gameranx and following your stuff for close to a decade. The other day my Dad tells me he watches that "Jake Ballarino" (nice try, Dad) " you know, the before you buy guy". He then did his best attempt at the "Jake in a suit" hands out in front pose. You know you've come a long way when a man in his sixties knows your gimmick. Well done sir.
I highly recommend picking this game up when it eventually hits like $30-40 around November. It's nice to have something with no stupid online requirement or shop.

It's intriguing because even though mechanically it's like a lot of other shooters it's still "different". Like discovering Borderlands for the first time. "These guns do what?"
I'm having the reverse effect, I feel like I've seen this all before... which is weird because this sounds so unique. It's like the praise that Jake is giving the game does not match when I'm seeing in the video. It looks a bit generic to me.

I'm currently playing this game, and I love it so far. Started it the other day, and I'm already 6 hours into the story. I'm looking forward to finishing this game. The lore and gameplay have drawn me in.
The idea of a 11-12 hour game is great. I think about the length of games all the time as a dad, and husband and this is the perfect amount of time
But not for $70
Ive never understood this complaint. A game being longer shouldnt be an issue as a dad. You still cant play all day regardless of whether the game is long or short. Why spend $70 on a shorter game when you can get a longer game for the same price. If you can only play an hour a day you should still choose something more cost effective. That doesnt mean I vouch for the 300 bloatfests that Ubisoft has been making lately
So I may be in the minority here but I have so many 50 hour+ games that I never touch as a dad of two kids because it’s overwhelming. If I get an hour or two to play a night I wanna play something that feels like I accomplished something not spending 2 weeks just to be 10% through a game. I also grew up during a time where most big AAA games were short and sweet. And I miss that sometimes.
@@tylermighell9217 Why does it feel overwhelming. I can understand something where you have to explore extreme sized maps and not playing for a week throws off your progress or super long and deep quests with details you need to remember but there are plenty of 40+ hour games that dont have those expectations. Not to say I dont enjoy shorter games either but sometimes I find peoples issues with longer games as parents to be slightly overblown

I'm excited for this. I'm one of four people in the world who still uses Gamefly, and linear straight forward action games are perfect from time to time between those huge AAA 100 hour RPGs.

I agree we need more games like this. 10 years ago I was constantly going through different (great) campaigns [Halo, Uncharted, Dead Space,…]
The only recent one I remember really enjoying is Doom Eternal.
Even though I’m not going to buy it any time soon, when it goes on sale and this crazy year of games is over I’ll pick it up. I really want games like this to do well, because we need more games like it.

I picked this one up and it's actually a blast so far. It definitely isn't a ground-breaking game with unique features; however, it's a fun and simple action/adventure experience with a hint of some DOOM style movement.
Sounds like something that would have been better off buying later down road on sale but atleast you are enjoying it.

Seventy Dollar games released unpolished half-baked and just a skeletal system of mechanics that don't work right that is most companies and the Standard now in the gaming world.

You brought it to my attention. I haven't heard much about it. As a father with a career, I don't have a lot of time anymore for games. But I do appreciate the shorter style classic single player action/adventure games as well as the large open world AAA ones. Looks like a fun game I'll pickup on Steam sale at some point after playing Starfield. Hopefully by then the performance will be a little better.

I'm stoked for this game. But I'm going to be jumping into Armored Core 6 this weekend, and I want to play Baldur's Gate 3, and Sea of Stars, etc., so I have no idea when I'll pick it up and play it.
I appreciate when a studio/writers just give it a go and try something new, or rather something that used to work and was abandoned. Linear, 10-15 hour action games are gaming's bread and butter, and they seem to be coming back.
Jake, I took your recommendation for Evil West and couldn’t have loved it more. I’m in the exact same boat as you. I want old school, linear, adventure games again. This definitely looks like a good time. But I think, for me at least, it’ll be an on sale pickup.
Side note, do you guys plan on doing a Before You Buy for Shadow Gambit? Because I’m obsessed with it right now and curious on your thoughts.

I was excited to get this game around launch when it had a July released date, but with it being so close to Starfield, it'll probably go on my "buy when on sale" list. But it looks quite fun! I'm excited to have another in the future backlog to look forward to!

I’ve been hyped for this game for a minute, it’s honestly so much fun. It’s cool to just play a game. Not worry about a checklist, or feeling like I’m constantly missing something. This is just a fun ass game.

Good review. Just FYI there are no PC performance issues for most rigs. The problem is the actual CPU specs you need are more steep than expected. I have a solid system with a 3080ti and have zero issues, but if you are skirting the bottom of the requirements, it is rougher. Also, the developers built in a graphics adjustment system that literally shows your GPU and CPU resource as points to spend so you can maximize your optimization by "spending" resources for certain things and downgrading others to save resources. It was actually vert clever. For those who are very used to working with graphic settings, the points you get are on the safe side, so the game should still be smooth if you push the numbers a bit.

I hadn’t followed this at all but this looks really exciting especially as a nice little self contained experience. I will say that for 70$ 12 hours is a little short. I don’t want it to be an 80 hour game and defeat the purpose of what it’s going for but I’d rather it was either like 40-45$ at this length or was closer twice that, but I’ll still try it when it’s a bit cheaper who knows it could be an incredible 12 hours sort of like Doom 2016 which is right around that same length and is a masterpiece
I agree. $50 for this just like remnant 2 or the new prince of persia coming in January is perfect price for games under 16 hours. Requesting $70 then the game should be at least 20 hours plus.

It's refreshing to get a back to basics type of game that can be completed in less than 100 hrs & isn't packed with bloat. I will pick it up in a sale as full price for a short game is a steep ask. Should make for a nice stocking stuffer at Christmas in the sales.

If nothing else, the devs nailed the “Noun-of-Generic Fantasy Proper Noun” naming convention. Immortals of…whatever it’s called (already forgot), fits perfectly into the lexicon of ambiguous video game naming tropes, alongside Kingdoms of Amalur, Story of Seasons, Tales
Of Vesperia, etc.

This game is an amazing first example of the new Unreal Engine 5 on console and what we have to look forward towards. On top of that it’s a great game!
Just started this and love it soi far. I really dug the way they introduced the main protagonist,Jack. And the settings are pretty unique and interesting. Fnding the combat pretty snappy. It's like Hexen meets Doom Eternal!

Not really my type of game, but looks nice. It is a new IP from EA, I believe, and I hope they continue to support new games like these. I hope some people find enjoyment with it, even if it's not for me, it's definitely for someone out there! :)

Great video. Just downloaded the trial and I loved it, but wanted to see what the consensus was about this game.
Jack must have a massive right shoulder to be able to hold his arm up like that at all times while carrying that gauntlet.
I'm hoping for more magic-oriented games. I'd prefer them being 3rd person b/c not very fond of FP view. They can make such realistic shooters, I just want them to make some cool magic-based games.

Just downloaded this last night off game pass and I'm highly pleased with it so far. As a old gamer. This is what I like. Simple fun. Im also engaged with the world and lore of the world. It's very interesting.

At this point, I will pay more for a 20 hour game than a 100 hour game. A hundred hours of slog is too mush sometimes. But a well crafted experience that ends when it needs to? I value that more these days. I'll be checking this one out.
Looks like it would be a fun title to pick up when it goes on sale. $70 seems like a bit of a steep price at that moment.
Sometimes I feel like the mage class in a lot of games are kind of muddled out and would rather choose the warrior class (or a warrior/mage class) because developers tend to make a game based around close combat (if not they tend to do a shooter game instead), but I feel like this game is a good test way of finding a mage class that can really do well in a bigger game, If EA can use this as a test to hone a mage class for an rpg, I think people will not only be pulled towards the warrior class/warrior mage class but also the straight up just mage class. I don't play so many games so maybe there are some really good mage classes in a big rpg but this is just my speculation. Any thoughts?
I agree the mage class in a lot of games tends to be less visually dynamic which is probably why you dont see that class highlighted as much in trailers and stories I wonder if thats why you dont often see them as main characters? I would say one game that did the mage class really well was Dragon's Dogma. I'd recommend that if you like mages as not only can you be a typically mage with a staff doing devastating spells but also a mage hybrid such as a magical archer.

I just purchased, installed, and did a first stream of Fort Solis. Another game I had no idea was in the works until seeing an early play by Alanah Pearce.
This looks very promising. I love the fast movement and the gameplay in general looks fun.
Literally just finished it and I loved it!
I'm very glad my predictions on the story weren't true - it seemed to be pulling an Infamous situation regarding the villain, and I spent most of the narrative thinking it would play out that way due to certain dialogue that seemed to be hinting at that. But thankfully it didn't go that way. Trying to be non spoiler here about what I thought would happen.
The trailers made this look like it had, major identity issues, trying to be every genre at once, but your coverage is really clear and I may actually pick this up at some point.
Looking forward to it I've had it pre ordered for months
