Thank you for this reaction. Identity is my favorite Taemin song for several reasons. I really liked the atmosphere as well as the instrumental and his deep voice in the chorus. I don't know why, but I always had this feeling that you weren't going to like it, maybe because it's quite different and special. The lyrics are quite sad as well and we can guess that he was talking about Jonghyun's debut album (Base) and his debut album (Ace), so the lyrics must be somehow related to Jonghyun.
Ace is the title of Taemin solo album debut and Base is the title of Jonghyun solo debut album. Actually all the members of SHINee named their first debut albums in a similar way the rhymes in Korean and even their album covers are similar. Jonghyun Base , Taemin Ace , Key Face , Onew Voice and Minho doesn't have a solo album yet but he called his solo fanmeeting Choice. The members of SHINee have a really special relationship. Jonghyun was 2nd members to debut solo after Taemin and he was the first member to begin this tradition of naming their solo albums like this and he even joked about it saying he plagiarized Taemin's album Ace lol. After Jonghyun did this all the members after him did the same
Base to Ace means from Jonghyun to Taemin, because base is the name of Jonghyun’s debut album and Ace is the name of Taemin’s debut album and these albums are linked together. I think Jonghyun is behind this masterpiece!
For me, this is a beautiful song simple because of the depth of emotion in it. It's so revealing to me regarding Taemin's feelings about Jonghyun. Some will disagree and say it's not about Jonghyun, but there are many clear indications that it is. Even Taemin's VCR/performance is full of reminders of Jonghyun. For example, the fact that Taemin chose the theme of "The Little Prince", Jonghyun's favorite book, to portray the prince in the VCR while Jonghyun was portrayed as the fox in "Good Evening" and "I Want You". Other clues include the very telling refrain of "Base to Ace". As you know, Taemin's very first solo album in 2014 was entitled "Ace". Well, Jonghyun debuted his very first solo album in 2015 and playfully told Taemin he had copied Taemin's title by naming his album, "Base". Then Key and Onew jumped on the bandwagon and titled their first albums, "Face" and "Voice" respectively. Even the main lyrics point to Taemin's feelings of loss with the words, "Your eyes that used to shine" stated in the past tense. Jonghyun was known for his shining eyes and was also nicknamed "Bling, Bling". "Deep inside my overflowing emotions I'm not over you". Then we have, "The emotions that are still left are slowly making eye contact with me." Toward the end of the song, he talks about when the dawn is over (death or dream of life) and your (Jonghyun's) eyes open again they will shine on me. Taemin is a Christian and possibly Jonghyun too (not sure). So here, I feel Taemin may be saying when I die, I will meet you in Heaven and you're eyes will shine on me again. Taemin and Jonghyun knew each other prior to the other SHINee members. They were trainees together before getting assigned to SHINee. Jonghyun took a very young Taemin under his wing and Taemin looked up to him as both a great vocalist and parental figure. They were very close. Jonghyun even helped to teach a young Taemin how to sing and was so proud of Taemin's hard work and success, becoming Taemin's biggest fan. Sadly, Jonghyun passed away in 2017. In 2018, Taemin was left alone while the other members went into the military. He promoted his solo work on his own, yet with every chance he got, he talked about how much he missed his SHINee brothers and what they meant to him. The intro to this song was an instrumental outro to his 2019 album "Want", just two short years after the tragedy. Finally in 2020, SHINee were reunited once more, and Taemin instantly became this euphoric ball of extremely overt happiness and energy. However, it didn't last long. When he got word of his military enlistment, he did a VLIVE to tell his fans and cried. We have NEVER seen this from Taemin before, and it was heartrending. He only had seven months with the brothers he had missed so dearly and who left him just one year after Jonghyun's death. Then, this admitted introvert who has only known the Kpop world from the time he was 12 (pre-debut), with all of SM as his support, is suddenly whisked away and thrown into a totally foreign environment with no one he knows. I honestly think that all of these factors, especially his enlistment notice, were the catalyst that started his depression, anxiety, and worsening mental condition. What if something happens to one of his brothers again, and he's not there? What if something happens to him, and he never gets to see his family or brothers one last time? Many things could have been flying through his mind after all he'd been through in just the last four years. Of course being continually harassed while in the military only added fuel to the fire. I'm only speculating here, but if it were me, as an introvert myself, I would be terrified and lost. I'm so glad he's in the public service department of the military now, where he can go home after work and have his family and SHINee brothers around him. One of the first messages we received after hearing about Taemin's condition was from Minho saying, "Don't worry. We're with him." I'm hoping he will get better quickly with his most important support people in place.
Can't agree more. Idk why so many people are in denial that this clearly has many references to Jonghyun with all their random theories, it's almost like they are trying to disregard the fact for some reason. Jonghyun and Taemin had one of the strongest and closest friendships in the group and in general, there's nothing shocking or impossible that he'd want to express his feelings about him in a song. Of course it may have a few different possible interpretations and is probably an intentional choice, but most songs do. To me it's a lot more likely related to the two of them than anything else that is being speculated.
How can anyone say that it's not linked to Jjong? As soon as I heard "Base to the Ace" I was more than convinced it's something about Jjong. And call me crazy, but 'till this day I think the Base part sounds like Jonghyun, not Taemin, but that's most likely my brain tricking me.
@@msSweeTae idk but there are people like that even in the comments here... 🤨 Maybe they're just solo Taemin stans and don't know anything about SHINee or Jonghyun. I can't come up with other reasons 😒
One of my most favorite songs by Taemin. I think it's very personal, I feel very connected to the song somehow. Taemin said once, that he gave the author some words he wanted to be incorporated into the lyrics. I think he is singing about the fans, Jonghyun and his own growth as an artist and person. Thank you for this reaction :)
Identity is a grand song it’s the beginning and the finale. To connect to it you might want to listen to Act2 in order, there is a reason why it’s the final song. It’s the closing of a chapter of identity search and finding. The full act1 act2 albums are around this concept and this song is the closing anthem. Ace is his debut and Base is Jonghyun’s.
The song is about the one who left early but will always remain a Shinee member. They will meet again on the other side his eyes will shine on Taemin again!
In an interview, I forgot which one. Taemin say that Identitiy is one of some songs that important for the Want album. Then he said that Identity will grow into something else. So I think he already had a big picture in his head about what he would deliver to public next up until Act 2 album. That's so genius step i think. Also the Base to Ace lyrics. Some said it was about Jonghyun since Jonghyun's first album Base, and Taemin's Ace. Some said that it was about his career journey when he strated from the very base (he mostly practice his dancing in SM's basement room) and now he rise to be the Ace of Ace in the industry. By the way, I'll keep waiting for Door live perf reaction from you.
I think it's about his career journey/finding his identity but also about Jonghyun. Everything can have multiple meanings, especially the lyrics of his songs
This song appeared in Taemin's concert in 2019. It was not released at that time, and it was a different version. It was not included in the album until November 2020 ngda act2
finally Identity!!!!!thank you for the reaction! in my opinion, Taemin is the only one who is making his crafts under one, very grand concept, which is finding his true identity as person and artist, among all kpop artists right now at the scene. His Charisma and aura is so big and unique and it seems like all coming from that one very persistent pursuit, journey of finding true himself through music. One of a kind…
Definitely listen to Want’s album outro Aaron, it’s only one minute long but DAMN when that bass hits it feels like you’re ascending to heaven and falling into hell at the same time. As another comment mentioned people loved it so much that he made a song out of it and performed it at one of his concerts (before not gonna dance again even dropped) and after a long long wait finally released the full song with this album!
This is a short outro of his Want mini-album, and it's the beginning of his T1001101 concert, to me, it's not a full song actually, :) It's more like a "feeling", a "mood" then a formal song.
I guess you have to know the meaning behind Identity. Especially the Base to the Ace part...Jjong's first EP Base and Taemin's first EP Ace. In another context I wouldn't bother much about the song either, but the meaning behind it makes it very special.
im not sure there is a connection there, but Ace was the title of Taemin's first solo mini Album, And Base was the title for Jonghyun's first solo mini album. Both albums were released with a few months difference. One of the songs in Taemin's abum (Pretty Boy) was writen by Jonghyun
I wonder what will be his thoughts on taemin's think of you, mars or any songs that exhibits taem cuteness. I prefer his dark songs too but there are times i listen to mars/think ofnyou multiple times

honestly, the translation was not good. there was just so many mistranslations. this song is so meaningful for him. its not the ‘your eyes that used to shine’ its ‘your eyes that HAVE ALWAYS SHINED ME without any words’ YOU refers to his FANS here and ME is Taemin. this song is about his identity. when he released the NGDA album, he wanted the first solo Ace to be the Base of him once again. not musically but in a way of passion or attitude towards to his work and art. i think this song is very touching because i can see his agony, loneliness, devotion, passion, effort, sincerity, love and everything through this song. every time i listen to this song i feel really connected with him.
@@universe986 i thk this YOU refers to another himself still struggling to get over many things. maybe he doesn't hate it that much cuz it makes him an artist Taemin. well its just my guess n preference loving so many official taemxtaems. lol i didnt care that ENGLISH lyrics cuz…. english is not his thing YET? lol but nuance of im not over you reminds me his fascinating press it photo kissing two of himself just like sad lovers.
I think the lyrics are about taemin looking at young taemin and feeling like he has finally achieve what he wanted becoming a real artist. Going from base to ace and show to everybody that even if he is the ace he will continue to work even harder because his love for music is Hotter than before.
