I was on the other side of the earthworks. We had just finished preparing dinner as the Confederates started coming up the hill. Hearing the trumpet roar and seeing the hundreds of Federals in camp rush to the earthworks without their jackets, hats, etc. is one of the memories I'll have forever. There was such confusion and yet such order that it struck me. We were ordered to take our food with us to eat while the Confederates came up the hill.
As a former reenactor, I'll never forget how every shot from these rifles you could just feel in your chest. Powerful, and quite chaotic.Add the cannons.....fawgetaboutit.
Had family on Culps Hill. Brutal fighting!! I've reenacted for 20+ years. Often have overwhelming feelings and emotions during engagements. For those who haven't experienced being part of a reenactment, it's quite amazing. I own large property in MD that closely resembles Culps Hill. Be visiting Gettysburg soon. Thanks for sharing!
Nearly 5 years later... I am a amateur/hobbyist recorder of events and reenactments. So this video taken up on the firing line was really enjoyable. When/If you ever go to another battle reenactment, get in touch with one of the Yankees w/ a GoPro and get opposing clips shot and do a joint video with a back and forth.
TexanPatriot Strategy it kinda sounds like knights running over the field screaming when it’s far away but up close it sounds like a fox being raped by a coyote being raped by another fox
Richard D. Moore Oh also what is your gear for Reenacting? I am just starting and I am Union (Sorry I live in the North nothing I could do about that) any recommendations?
MAn this is the best POV footage Ive seen so jealous I hope I can get something half this good to put on my channel hope you post more soon sir, fantastic shot!!
I was in the railroad cut earlier that day and after the battle I felt terrible. I stayed in camp and missed that engagement. Fortunately I felt better the next day and participated in the rest of the event. Still I heard Culp's hill was amazing. I wish I participated in it.
+Richard D. Moore how did you mount and conceal your go pro? could you do a video on this? I rarely get good videos as I do not have many opportunities to pull my camera out. I dont want to be the one to ruin someone's immersion
As an irish man i say thank god for people like you guys who keep history alive the blue and gray forged a nation togeather so hoist on high the bonnie blue flag next to ole glory
Hey there, I'm a civil war reenactor and I've been wanting to do something like this for a while. How do you mount your camera onto your uniform? Any info is appreciated
I got to see myself :) lol. I saw u with ur go pro and was wondering if youd get me. I was the brown jacket to ur right. Thank you for uploading this. Truely it was an event to remeber
Nah, 5th NH, we were just a bit farther down the line from where this video was shot. We were posted just to the right of the opening in the wall (your left).
My great grandfather sgt JG Smith of the 60th George was at Culp,s hill . Im the youngest of a youngest son and born in 1943 so its only a great grandfather I was to young to ask granma much about any thing other then that he was in the war .From records I found out he enlisted in late 61 was wounded at Fredericksburg and was paroled at Appomattox .He was only 13 when he joined so he probably had a 18 on a pice of paper in his shoe so he could say with out lying he was over 18 they did that on both sides .
If you were going to purchase your own gear online what sites would you trust? keeping in mind that historical accuracy of the uniform is more important to me than price
So the places that sell really authentic stuff are rarely general suppliers (like most mainstream sutlers), so each place kind of specializes in one thing. Wambaugh, White, and Co. is a good place for uniforms.
Richard where did you get all of your gear? And what age is the young man that is usually in the front row? Im 15 and extremely intrested in reenacting. And how much did you pay for your gear?
+Xx Dropshot xX I believe the age limit for carrying a gun is usually 16. A uniform can cost you anywhere from 300 - 1000+ dollars depending on the quality. Usually units will loan you stuff before you get everything yourself. Gear can cost another 100-200 dollars, and a musket can usually be bought for around 500-1000 dollars depending on who you buy it from (I've seen some rifles for 300). It's a very expensive hobby, but it's a lot of fun!
The main problem was the rifle weapon. The slower the load and fire, the faster the death count. Lesson learned the hard way. At least this reenactment sheds light on the terror of this kind of fighting.
Mike Barnett Nobody was watching them so they weren’t using their ram rods. That’s why the rate of fire is so quick. Usually when my unit has isolated sessions we still ram for the sake of authenticity but a few guys don’t.
Hi Richard, I am producing a documentary on Fort Heiman, a civil war fort in my area. I would love to use these films as b-roll in my documentary with your permission. Would you be okay with me using these clips in my production? It is a non-profit film as I am a television student. Thanks.
@@ballparkburgers5799 There has usually been (at least) 1 Gettysburg reenactment each year, but the organization that has hosted most of them for the past several decades (the GAC) announced last year that they would no longer be hosting the event. A number of organizations, individuals, and sites are stepping forward to host the event.
Wouldn't uniforms among confederate regiments have a more similar appearance vs willy nilly? They come from the same comissary sources and were usually around the same time that uniforms are about to wear out.
Slant Six no. Must confederate uniforms were custom tailored they would often line their jackets with material from a girlfriend or wife's dress Although most units had a specific color or arrangement required n i think most stated issued uniforms not sure. But a texas confederate had basically no standardization It was all self supplied The confederate government Didnt really outfit texas units Let alone arm them Texans bought a lot of their own weapons my great grandfather and uncle included Kennard caiphis ham Fought at the alamo and in the early years of the civil war with his son benjamin Kennard was givin jim bowies knife personally. I have one question, did the caplock gun had disadvantages? I'm planning to make a caplock gun from cardboard but I like it better when it has disadvantages.
Only God knows what it would have been like if both GAC and BGA were combined.. Im pretty sure there would have been close to actual numbers..but no...just like in everything else politics gets in the way..I was there for both and I must say these events were exactly the opposite of one another. but both were so much fun and emotional.
I wish these reenactments were preceded with a pep talk. These guys casually load their rifles, point, shoot then causally load them again. Reenactment means to reenact HOW these soldiers fought. Those young men were pumped with massive adrenaline, they would be loading their rifles as if their lives depended on it, not like they were out for a Sunday stroll. All of the effort getting the uniforms, the guns, the tents, so much logistics to do these reenactments and then the guys look like they are out for a day on the golf course rather than a frantic fight. Someone needs to lead these men and pump them up to do what those brave men did over 150 years ago on that sacred ground. Is that too much to expect?
Oh one thing I must add.. why do people say.."over" there is no need for that, if the guy in the rear rank puts his musket where it should be then there is no need to say "over" as privates we must be quiet in the ranks!
I think I would just be struck with awe in this situation I mean look at all that smoke now remember guns used to produce 4 times that amount and every single shot was like a cannon itself
"guns used to produce 4 times that amount" you probably have mistaken this with smokeless powder. this is actually a pretty realistic amount of smoke also the kickback isn't even that much i've heard cause the black powder is slower burning than compared to smokeless powder which is more of a quick explosion
I like this a whole lot but I keep asking myself in this relentless opposing fire, where are the casualties. Not every guy is going make it up that hill, right?
I can see where they could put up a few drones with cameras to be viewed and moved by judges to view the ongoing battle. That with some kind of sound recorder, they could tell which army was firing the most. The army firing the most would/should carry the field. The judges could see what each commander was doing. If the commanders wernt moving their men with the best strategy, a judge could send in a couriour with a message to the commander s that they were about to be surrounded and must retire. They could also send in a courour telling a commander that the other side was firing more than they were, and they must retreat. This, I think, would cause commanders to THINK about their strategy, and try to honestly gain a victory, OR know that the were defeated.Yes, I know that for 50yrs+ that they the commanders play it to where one side wins a victory regardless of their size or strategy, the next battle or next day, the other side wins, regardless of strategy or firepower. I think that this would put more realism in the battles.I think the individual commanders would, the night before the battle confer with their commands to gain the best strategy possible, and that those in charge of individual commands would know that there is a purpose in what there expected to do.I think the individual s in the ranks would know that theres a REAL reason there being put here or there, Being marched and then remarched, and maybe that on the run. I think that they would know that there fire power was being recorded and that they must pour it into them by the bucketsful to hopfully gain the victory
I don’t understand how War of Rights looks better then this even tho it’s real I’m so confused 🤷♂️ maybe it’s because it’s not in the eyes of the soldier it’s on a GoPro that’s not on your head so it looks kinda wonky when you hold your gun yup to aim
Good to see a reenactment with a little intensity, as opposed to a bunch of farbs yucking it up and treating it like a joke. Nicely done!
So you haven’t seen the good ones yet well glad you finally found one that’s good

Did you guys use some kind of rubber balls?
No. We reenactors have balls of steel.
This was my first major re-enactment - I was on the top of the hill with the Union. *LIKED* the video and hope to see ya'all in the field again.

reminds me so much of 1998 there during the culps hill fight, but it was slightly raining then
You can imagine how the rebel yells would have been intimidating for the other side when they don't have them in eyeshot.
I know and believe me every time I go to a reenactment I get really scared
Can hear the Rebel yell 1:32
love it

I do reenacting but how do you have the gopro on you because I want to get footage like this when I do reenacting

Saw my favorite regiment, 3rd AR
How do you wear your camera

BenBomb5 There very relaxed on the rules (Well kind of depends on the group) I'm 14 and I'm allowed to carry a gun into battle.
Jaxon 78 hey I know that place near nortan and hi knob
This is a good video. Makes me feel i am there in the real war. Thank you for doing this.
what brand rifle are u using?
The main problem was the rifle weapon. The slower the load and fire, the faster the death count. Lesson learned the hard way. At least this reenactment sheds light on the terror of this kind of fighting.
Awesome!!!!!!!
Seems more realistic than some I've see.Was impressed with the rate of fire also.I would love to do this at least once..

I was at this event lol. But since i was so tired from the battle before i was actually sleeping through the gun fie haha.
I wish GAC could've put on an event like this. Too much standing around and burning powder.
bruh that rebel yell gives me the chills. I love it. im working on getting what I need to join a Confederate reenactment in Texas.
Dang I miss the south some days.
Great reenactment
around 4:15 the guy to your left reloads fast! it would be cool if you could add sound effects of bullets wizzing past you
what where thay using when thay fire the muskets
Super Nintendo man we just use blanks (powder)
how was yur gopro mounted (did you try to hide it)
Probably a little hole in his hat
wow is this like, a remake of it?
Zulu Basically
how do you join a reenactment

+Richard D. Moore Thanks so much! I will be sure to include you in the credits and send you a link to the final production if I use the footage.
what do the guns fire? like is it just the powder or is there something else in them?
Just powder
***** oh ok thanks for the clarification.
+Namreenactor1 incorrect, they use real guns, but they have blank cartridges
Chancellor Palpatine That's exactly what I said, The cartridges fire black powder. There was never a dispute if the guns were real or not.
how does one no if theyve been hit i mean r they told before hand to fall down ? there doesnt seem to be enough bodies lying around
If I remember we were given unit assignments for eat senario and told how many casualties we had to take
Hey what side you on? You a confed or a Union?
he's a confederate
Thank you it took me a while
That's amazing
what town in what state do these take place at?
daylen miller This was the 150th gettysburg in 2013 on a site replicated to look like the battlefield near Gettysburg, PA
Troy Is it like this every year (private battles) or was it just for 150th?

what do they shoot?
Blank shots.
What brigade is this?
3rd Ark =D one of the best units of the army of northern virginia
Why dont they use the ram rod

Didnt really outfit texas units

Kennard caiphis ham
Fought at the alamo and in the early years of the civil war with his son benjamin

Haha I see Russell in the beginning.
Other than real casualties and exploding shells, it looks about as real as can be!
so how would i hide a camera like a go pro and still be able to tape the whole battle while I'm in the reenactment
A little hole in the hat
VERY COOL GUYS!

Did anyone die?
You can spot one or two drop to the ground but not many

do u use real guns or fakes they look so real and btw how do u know when you've bee hit
they are fake of course and you know when you have been hit by just guessing
these guns are very real they're just using blank catridges,I use an original 69 caliber musket myself but with blank catridges
he means original from the age
really. really. real I shot one with a lead ball and it flew through my couch along with my cabinets
tomoki scott yeah that'll happen if you load a weapon and fire it in your house
How does one know if they're hit to play dead?
Usually if you run out of ammo or know that your side took a lot of casualties during this battle, you go down.
My Lord ...It's good and all but them boys need to learn how to Keep in Rank and File.
Do muskets not have recoil? Because it seems like if I fire it once, I'll go flying 50 feet back.
they don't if you're firing blanks.
war of rights with 4k graphics
I wish they would do this but with airsoft
