Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I am an intermediate school teacher on the other side of the pond (Newfoundland, Canada). My students say they love my stories, because, like you, I believe history is much, much more than just a regurgitation of "facts." It's an entire collection of human stories.

I share Bruce's stories on my True History Of Scotland page he exposes stories from Scotland's past which were hidden, until now many of them shocking stories of brutality and at times he makes me laugh with his humour I had never heard of this part of our history and I have been to these towns and villages several times I am sure my friends from these places will leave a message in my group of shock...thank you, Bruce, you deserve a reward even if it's many more subscribers.

It’s too bad that there is not enough history taught in the schools.
And so much local history is unknown, largely because of the focus on the downtrodden outport fisherman narrative.
Newfoundland history is so much more.
For example, how many know of the connection of the Newman Company Fish servants and the most famous Naval battle of the war of 1812? A book worthy or even movie worthy story.
Maybe you should start to produce similar videos on the History of the Province. There are some great tales with real human interest.

I was in Dundee in Scotland a few years ago and saw an old photo frame with 5 pictures and recognized a ship instantly
It was of the Dundee Whalers and I had seen the pictures in a book by a Scottish doctor written about 1870 on a whaling and sealing trip to Newfoundland.
As an Englishman and an avid historian I love this channel

Great stuff, as a child of the Scottish education system of the 70’s/80’s, these stories were never taught in class, very interesting and I’m glad you continue to do them “warts and all’ 👍
Well said Bruce. Having spent time in Yugoslavia in the mid-90s, after seeing house after house, in village after village burnt out, this I learned - there is a particular type of brutality reserved for one's own. This is what happens when a people turns on itself.
The evocation of this sort of callous inhumanity needs pre-existing divisions to work upon. In the cases of both Yugoslavia and 18th century Scotland there were distinct religious, linguistic and cultural differences present in different groups, so that in both countries at that point in time it would be difficult to describe all the inhabitants as 'one people'.
@@RichWoods23 of course you are right. The differences were played upon heavily and exploited. I guess, if you are going to slaughter your neighbour and burn his house down, you needed a strong "other" to exist to justify your actions.
In the case of Scotland, it must be remembered that the Jacobite vs Hannovarian division was not entirely a Highland vs Lowland division - these things are never quite that clean.

Another story well told Bruce and a perfect ending. One that is well suited for our times. I couldn't help but think of the people of Afghanistan as I listened to you. Those people that suffer no matter who wins whatever war is fought on top of them. So it was in Scotish history centuries ago it is around the world still.
Hey Bruce, love your channel. As a former high school history teacher, I love the realism and humor with which you deal with difficult subjects.
As far as that "Let me tell you a story" hoody, I have an almost 10 year old little girl who is autistic and loves her hoodies, here in Western Oregon. When we travel around the Pacific States, I tell her all kinds of stories about the Native Americans, the Euro-Americans, as well as those who don't get so much press, such as African Americans and Asian Americans. We have stone railbeds on the sides of the mountains not far from here built in the in the 1800s by Chinese laborers that few in the community even know are there and still being used today. I can think of no better way to help with her connect to her Scottish History on both parents' sides of the family, as well as the overarching humanism you bring to this channel about ALL of us. Maybe a way of helping her feel she belongs to both her Scottish Ancestry and the world at large.
Such a brilliantly paced story with a stinging ending. Plus a simpler and more elegant rationale about humanity than Tolstoy managed at the end of War & Pease. Superb

I’d love a ‘Let me tell you a story’ hoodie because I have been a tour guide in Edinburgh for 8 years and since discovering this channel, I have been able to add so many stories to my tours. I also go to the gym a lot and like to show off my muscles. So I wear small size shirts and hoodies.

Really heartwarming to hear stories in our history that we never heard in school. (( was in a school in Edinburgh from 1955- 1963 and History of Scotland was my love. Enjoyed the Dunfermline segment very much as I spent some time in a retirement home near the Cathedral and near Carnegie Park and the St Margaret cemetery. Grew up near the " only Lake" in Scotland.
This is the first of your videos I’ve seen. I’m now off to watch the rest. I’m an Australian with a Thompson grandfather from the Borders and a Robertson grandfather from Perthshire. I am an Aussie bloke, now 68, whose forbears left Dunning in the early 1840’s for Australia. Campbells they were. I have visited Dunning, and stayed in the Dunning Hotel, which I consider my spiritual home and I am great full for the detailed information about Dunning. Cheers 🇦🇺🤝🇸🇪
Bruce, yet another exemplary and thought provoking video. I've travelled the world and been stunned by the generosity and kindness of strangers, yet at the same time have been terrified by humankind's capacity for malevolence when incited to think of our neighbours as different, lesser, or a threat. This capacity exists within us all. Most scary is the willingness of some to exploit it for their own ends.

“The cheeky bastard…” I died laughing. As always great story Bruce. Interesting to hear the “other” side; some of my family prior to immigrating to America were Jacobites as far as I’ve read and seen searching my genealogy. Probably would’ve been too, but that’s beside the point.
Unfortunately, not that it’s a good excuse, in war there’s never a really a “good” side. Usually both or all sides do terrible things. As the old saying goes history is written by the victor. Winning side typically is romanticized to look better than the losing.
Except, for this period of history, the accepted, romantic version is written by the losers (or at least their apologists).

@@garyboyle695 He has a point, I'd never heard of this event before, though I've heard of the Glencoe massacre many times. People pick and choose which historic events are worth remembering and regardless of which side did worse things it does seem that the Jacobites are portrayed as heroic martyrs most of the time. (in fact there isn't even a Wikipedia page to help with researching the event discussed in this video)

Wow! I have never heard this before and the fact that some of my ancestors were involved is not surprising, but is heart wrenching. War is atrocity and whoever is dishing out the atrocity should remember there will be karmic whiplash. I guess that is why the MacLean clan eventually lost everything and many had to leave Scotland forever. What goes around comes around... Great story telling once again!

Thanks for telling us another story, Bruce. As ever, when "great leaders" go to war, competing evils have to be measured up and the lesser ones chosen. The measuring up of evils depends very much on who is doing the measuring and who is suffering the evil. Like in Vietnam where Peter Arnett famously recorded a US major saying after the Battle of Ben Tre that, "It became necessary to destroy the town to save it."

I'm an amateur military history buff and the biggest thing I realized is that humans can be horrible to other humans while being wonderful to others. All for reasons that can seem foolish and nonsensical to outsiders.
As a MacDonald, I find myself humbled and heartbroken for these actions. Of course, there is no way to force a 21st century morality on our 18th century ancestors. But, as you point out, we likely haven’t changed much. Consider what is happening in Afghanistan right now.

Funnily enough, my maiden name was Paterson, and I'm now a MacDonald. We have been to Glencoe many times. It has a feeling I am certain is a match for that at Culloden. Beautiful, but sad. This is an eyeopener for many other atrocities carried out against our people.
I love that your videos often have summary views, and that you go out of your way to present both sides, either within the same video or in companion videos. I really love how you pointed out that it depends on which side you choose. That''s something I've tried to stress in my life and hope that my kids and grand-kids carry it through to the future. You've got to see it from both sides and think it through, knee-jerk reactions generally serve no one. Thanks for another wonderful video.

He will love your tales they are so enthralling and we used to stay in Braco and Crieff, although we are now located more centrally between Glasgow and Edinburgh we still miss Perthshire and the people there so much.
My belief is we are who we are and we are only human; with our own views and opinions, we can agree or disagree, but respectfully. I'm pleased to hear you covering the burning of Strathearn. It was an inexcusable atrocity by the side that history has romantically painted as heroic failures. I only found out about it a few years ago while researching the Battle of Sheriffmuir and coming across the thorn tree in Dunning, but it really should be more widely known. Dunning, by the way, is the most beautiful of villages, with a church built where a saint killed a dragon and memorial to the burning of a witch who didn't exist.
Even before I've fully watched these vids I give them a like as they're alway great and never a let down! Well done 👏👏
I am English man whos lived both North and South of the border .I have always had an interest in history but you said something at the end of this video which is so true it resonates with me ,we do pick sides nobody sees it with a blank neutrality .We do have a willingness to listen and try to understand but we will always judge the facts on how we see things .Wether its our education how we were brought up ,or who we speak with .It is the truth ,subscribed keep up the good work

I'm a historian too, so I completely get your points about how people will most often assess historical events and people through the lens of their own particular bias... But when studied in-depth, all historical events reveal a fascinating complexity that doesn't allow simplistic, partisan, biased points of view to stand up to scrutiny.... 🤔

I loved your comments at the end about what is "the truth" and what people "believe to be the truth" ; people believe first and observe second. Sadly this is too true no matter what country, race, religion, etc. I've come to the conclusion that "Reality is a matter of opinion". Whether or not I'm believing first and observing second when I say that I guess is yet another opinion on reality.
Some people have a gift of telling stories tales making history sound so interesting you have a gift... like Frank Carson used to say ,. It's the way you tell umm with a big smile ....I only wish my history teacher had been more like you I'm sure exam results would have been so much better for many ...

The Highlanders weren’t necessarily fighting because they believed in the Jacobite cause though, very many of them were beholden to their Clan leaders. That was part of the deal. They had no choice.

I have a secret though which is I like haggis and porridge with salt and water more than he does so I think I am really more Scottish than he is.I can remember all the episodes we’ve seen we he can’t . Great video. There's a great book out there titled "The Feckin' Book of Irish History" by Colin Murphy...he doesn't pull any punches on how jerky the Irish were to other Irish..we're all human and so were our ancestors.
Whatever internal atrocities may have been committed by Irish against Irish or Scottish against Scottish, the elephant-in-the-room of atrocities in the British Isles have been due to English megalomania. Think of the Plantations of Ireland and the Highland Clearances. Think of the displacement of the Irish in Ireland to infertile land that lead to the cataclysmic famines in the 19th century.

Oh Bruce, that was perfect mate. My dad was a history teacher and taught my wife, he was rubbish at teaching, apparently (or so she tells me), but he was a great dad. Our home was full of history books, and while I studied science and medicine, I often spent hours reading them. I have been drawn back to history as a subject, trying to understand the human journey, I suppose. Well, mate you make learning fun. Aroha.

I have to say you are absolutely spot on. We need to tell it as it is the evil and the good but we also need to remember this is about the humanity and the truth is no matter who commits the atrocities we should always call it out and remember it so we remember the lessons of history otherwise we are doomed to repeat them. I would like the hoodie because I am learning so much more about my history than my dad and Uncle were able to tell me. To be fair. I knew about my ancestor John de Graeme. I knew about Bonnie Dundee, but you helped me put the rest of the puzzle together for me. My Grandpa Graham died when I was 3 and my dad died when I was 10, so you have helped me know my history. Amen, brother! It reminds me of the story of the preacher who was railing against different sins from the pulpit. There was a pious old woman in the front row who, after each sin was mentioned, would cry out "Preach it, pastor!" That is, until he touched on her particular sin, at which point she cried out "Now you've gone to meddling!" The reason so many hate history is because those that teach it don't make it come to life. Those involved in the stories of the past were real people, with real motives, and suffered or prospered accordingly. When history is presented to young minds like flat beer, it's no wonder they don't like it.
