I agree, it is sad to hear. But like any relationship where people are together for as long as they have been together, naturally things are not always going to blissful. And the dirt or hard feelings and jealously or whatever is going on in the band relationship is going to be buried until something like this happens and then it's all out in the open. Hopefully, with all this banter going on they work it out and move on. Those two are bookends and IMO are one of the best twin guitar duo's in metal. If you think about it, Metallica showed us just how human our metal gods are with their behind the scene video.

Just like Mustaine saying he sang or hummed solos to Marty Friedman, which was insinuated to mean that Marty Friedman couldn't come up with a memorable solo on his own, SMH. These guys are acting like spoiled brats, who can't get along in the sand box. I see a lot of folks taking the band's side, acting as though K.K. is just a clown with no relevance, they're completely happy with the band as is, and blah, blah, blah. What has happened to the minds of the people ??? K.K. and Glenn are LEGENDARY together. Along with Tony Iommi, they are up near the top, in regards to the creation of heavy metal music as we know it. K.K. is still alive. Glenn is still alive. Richie Faulkner is willing to play with K.K. ...... This is just so beyond childish and stupid. And, I've seen too many comments from people who have been witness to Glenn's alcohol consumption, for it to be all lies. There's fault on all sides here. Not just K.K. Nobody else does it or even tries to because its so original and takes decades of all day playing to do what he was doing. His use of Harmonics and the Whammy Bar is pretty untouchable. It’s not like Glenn was plastered on stage and even if he was, his playing was spot on. For many years I had the very clear notion that Glen was a significantly better guitarist than KK, but once Painkiller came out I had to admit that KK seriously upped his game and modernized his chops and style. KK deserves kudos for not resting on his laurels.
I do wish that these guys would refrain from talking smack about each other, but then they engaged in some of the same garbage when Halford left for a bit. When former bandmates compete with one another in the media, either out of their own bad judgment or because managers and record labels put them up to it....That is the sad corner of the music business.
As to 'editing' solos, that can mean anything or not matter much at all. It was very common from the mid-70s to mid-80s to take several passes at a solo and then slice and splice licks from multiple tracks into a single solo. Even David Lee Roth related that Eddie sometimes would get frustrated trying to perform solos from VH recordings live because he would have to make unnatural leaps all over the guitar neck that he had not physically done in the studio, so not all great solos are 'natural' single takes of inspiration.
Furthermore, the reality that such practices took place during that era are not strictly issues of a guitarist being deficient as a player but reflect that recording technology improved dramatically during those years and as with any novel inventions those musicians who were so inclined to experiment and test limits simply indulged in that as a way of stretching themselves and their art.
Shame on anything KK may have said (I haven't been following the drama), but also shame on Glen for trying to make an issue out of something that in all likelihood is mundane and was par for the course back in those days.

@@williamwalker146 Bearing than mind that "better" is mostly just a matter of individual taste when it comes to music and other arts, for my sense Tipton was always my favorite of the duo. My thoughts above are reflection of the fact that KK did put in a significant effort to modernize his style in that period that (to my perception) became very noticeable on the Painkiller LP.
Even though I still favor Glenn's playing, I believe strongly that anyone who works to improve themselves at whatever they do in life be it in a vocation or a hobby should be recognized for their efforts and achievements.
That you see something similar, but in reverse, speaks to the subjectivity of the listener....Perhaps being more inclined towards Glenn, I may not have listened as closely to KK in the years immediately prior to Painkiller, and as a consequence I did not become aware of the work he had been putting in until the result had become too obvious to ignore.

As I have been a major fan since '78 and they are my favorite band, IMO KK's major issue was with the JP mgmnt team. It's well known that Glenn has a very close relationship with JP mgmnt. It's also IMO that mgmnt and Glenn were the driving force to change gears with Turbo. They, though very well established as probably the most proficient metal band at the time, wanted a piece of the pie that was the huge commercial success that many metal bands (hair bands mainly) were having throughout the mid-late 80's. Sure they were headliner's, lots of sellouts everywhere and their albums were usually 1 or 2x platinum. IMO they deserved those 5-10x platinum albums since they were the band that created and paved the way for 99% of those that followed. I dont think that the Turbo direction was welcomed with open arms from KK and Rob so much as it was with Glenn. They made another attempt with Ram It Down but it did not happen, so they well back to square one and put out the masterpiece that is Painkiller!! Rob left in 91 and thus there was a hiatus until Ripper came along. To me it's hard to judge the whole vibe in the band during Ripper's time and IMO he fit in and did a great job!! So hopefully they get the HOF nod on their 3rd try and some olive branches can grow and perhaps cooler heads will prevail....who knows maybe even a reunion tour of sorts!!

He certainly brings a classical and lyrical sense of soloing in his style. However he and KK are not that dissimilar in technical ability. KK approaches things from more a sound and emotional perspective, and that his style. Certainly both of either solos in Beyond the Realms move me equally as an example. Also the note choice and sounds on KK’s solos on Demonizer, Hot For Love, Bloodstone? Glenn couldn’t do that, just not his style. And that combination defined Judas Priest the band.

As someone who has also spliced together guitar solos to make the piece more interesting, Glen bringing it up is bullshit! That's just saying he helped arrange some of KK's solos. KK is the one who played them, period. When I spliced together a solo I left it up to the original player as to if we kept it, rerecorded it, or went back to the original take. The fact that most of the time they chose my splice spoke to their professionalism.

      100%!!!!
Especially true back in the day when the number of tracks available to put down increased substantially. It made it a lot easier to 'go for it' on multiple passes and then slice and splice the best parts from two or more passes.
And everybody did it, so suggesting that it had to be done for KK to mask a deficit in his abilities when it is just as likely that Glenn was editing his own solos is ridiculous or worse--hypocritical.

Man, splicing has been the standard since the 1960s. There’s no shame, it’s just sort of an intellectual puzzle. What grooves on the record might be different than what flows naturally. Think about how heavily dubbed and edited your favorite music is! Everything from Floyd to Garfunkel to Streisand. It’s cool. But, I do have a prob with KK talking out of school, too. I hate the faction business! All these men seem to get rich, old, and lose their damn mind.

@@Raughwe Post-Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album-The first major record using 8 Tracks-True. But it really picked up steam once musicians, engineers, and producers had 16 tracks and more to work with since there is need to bounce tracks and risk signal degradation.
A lot of the music created in the 70s and 80s could not have been done in most of the 60s without significant compromises.
The real point is the availability of greater numbers of tracks encouraged greater experimentation. To have the luxury of 8 to 12 tracks more than you were used to facilitated more improvised solos and taking a couple of shots at it sometimes yielded very different ideas. It then became easier to just select a few bars from one track, the next set bars from a second, and maybe the final set of bars from a third track. Could it be done with less? In certain cases, but at the risk of sound quality, or of losing one of the passes/bounced tracks if an error was made in the mixing.
When Priest began recording in the early-70s 8-track may have still been the state of the art, but their career has encompassed an explosion in the evolution of the recording process. I have been outside of active recording for some time, I think the transition to 64 tracks from 48 was just beginning, but having up to 8 times as many tracks available just about opens a door to infinite creativity, and if Tipton’s “editing” claim is to be believed, yes you can cover mistakes as well, but so what?
The only thing that matters is the end-product. A “bad” Judas Priest album is a rarity in my books!

Sure Glenn edited in the studio, but ya can't edit Live on stage. Even Eddie Van Halen edited his guitar solos together in the studio. Glenn was the better guitarist and most importantly Priest's primary song-writer, but KK was the band's best performer. Both guys mixed like salt and pepper to create the band's Titanium-Metal sound. You can't have the "Judas" without the "Priest".

All respect to Ken but Glenn played circles around him. 'Ram it Down', 'Beyond the Realms...', 'All Guns Blazing', 'Invader', 'Solar Angels', Ken couldn't have played any of those or come up with something as memorable and melodic. 'Fever', 'Dreamer Deceiver', 'Rock you all Around the World', 'Freewheel Burning', I could keep going. That's not even mentioning the super memorable lead parts on the usual hits like 'Another Thing...', 'Livin After Midnight', 'Metal Gods' and go and listen to all the opening tracks on all their albums in chronological order, Glenn set a new standard every single time, he always pushed himself and had his ear to the ground but always made it his own. After EVH hit the scene towards the end of the 70's, Glenn came out with 'Hell Bent...' and 'Electric Eye'. At the end of the 80's when all the shrapnel guys were going bonkers, Glenn reinvented himself and did 'Painkiller' (!) and 'Ram it Down'. Those solos are a long way from 'Rocka Rolla'. He could've just rested on his laurels and recycled the same licks for decades like so many of his contemporaries did. Of course it's not a competition but what solos does Ken have? 'Sinner', 'Jawbreaker' and his solo at the end of 'Painkiller' honestly isn't a bad effort considering what was laid down only a few minutes earlier. I'll give him 'Troubleshooter' too because I can't remember who did that one but if you tally those up, there's a clear winner. Want something recent? Glenn's slide solo on 'Flamethrower' is really sick and again, different to anything he's done before.

EVERY record made has its solos edited down, re- learned and retracked, especially fiery intuitive emotionally charged players like Downing. It's not a big deal, it's just one of the processes of making records.
Tipton may play like a machine but Downing is the urgency and emotional covalence that weaves with the vocal like few people actually can. What a nothing burger comment by Tipton.

KK has that metal monster look, Glenn looks like my biology teacher sporting his teen sons pants. They're both talented, together they were unstoppable. Priest without KK isn't Priest, just a cheap imitation. It was their chemistry that gave them success, not 1 or 2 members over the others.

I hate to hear the bickering between K.K. and Glenn like this. But I have to clarify and disagree with something Glenn said here. He said he never drank to much before going onstage or being onstage. Now, I can’t confirm if it was beer or what, but about 35 years ago I saw Priest when I was stationed in Germany and it was VERY clear that Tipton was very HAMMERED that night. He said he may have had a couple of beers and it never affected his performance. Umm....okay. It damn sure affected his stability on his feet and his actions that night. And yes, it affected his performance. I would go so far as to say K.K. picked up the slack and carried him that show. But I was and am a huge Judas Priest fan and it really didn’t matter to me. I was just so happy to catch them live while on a short leave in Germany so far from my home in the states. So, a little bit of a lie from Glenn here.
