One suggestion be sure to have a sight glass on your reservoir. If you have slow leak this will be the first indicator that you have potential problem. Now you know about tape. We did have a pipe dope that you could use for oil lines. It purpose was not to seal but lubricate the threads so they did not gall. Tightening the nuts on the fittings I was taught hand tighten then wrench seven flats. After several thousand times I found that to be true.
Having lived in Durban and PE and being involved in sailing so much of the area is familiar to me. I only came across your channel a few days ago and I am really enjoying watching the effort you are putting into the boat. It's good to see the quality of workmanship.
"Doesn't that look professional?" Ricky you two have gone way past professional! You're to the point of perfectionist. You have come a long way from the poor abused cat you originally purchased to a beautiful home afloat. For a minute there I thought you had your steering system on an IV (lol). Thank you for your great video. One less item towards your launch. Have a productive week ahead.
Our Hydrive hydraulic system tech support is adamant that only copper tube should be used for sailboats, instead of the plastic tubing due to pressure loss when it expands. Makes the steering "soft". It will be interesting to see how you go with it when steering under high rudder pressure.
We know numerous cruisers who have the nylon tubing and have been perfectly fine with it long term as well and have heard numerous complaints about the copper tubing so yeah will be interesting to see. 👍🏻
Come on guys!! All that work on Lady Africa & its still not out there!! I just cant wait until you guys get out on the open Ocean to follow your adventures!! It will be unlike any other Yachty show on youtube! You will be able to fix any problems in your sleep!! But seriously I cant wait for your adventures on the high seas!!
Another very exciting episode. You guys put a lot of work on that trench, and as all the others, it's an important one. Many moving parts on a boat project (both literally and figuratively). Suggestions and advice in the comments. I trust your choices and also trust you both are smart, skilled and flexible enough to adapt to changes if or when needed. We are zeroed in, all in with you :)
A big thumbs-up congratulations on getting the hydraulics installed and up and running and bled I'll come out okay looks like that's job it's done hope you all have a great week great weather be safe we haven't seen the motor lately how's it doing?
Great vid. You have excellent teaching skills there Ricky. Those hose cutters come in so handy. Mine are slightly larger and are great for any hose types up to 1-1/2”. Up in Canada we have a place called Princess Auto, and they are a fantastic place to get all kinds of tools. Just wondering, what type of fluid are you using in the system?
Hey guys, maybe I missed it but how are you going to hide the hydraulic tubes that push your cylinder? Also, will you cover the brass cylinder or does that just stay exposed?
I've seen several sailing channels recently that were dealing with hydraulic steering or water makers. At least you read the directions. PTFE tape should never be used in hydraulics or high pressure water. One channel even recommended buying lots and lots of tape.NOOOOOO. Another one taped everything including the straight thread compression fittings. NOOOOO. PTFE tape can flake off and clog hydraulic valve passages. These are made to very tight tolerances. The Fluid you are using is very low viscosity. If tape flacks off and gets into the passages you may as well pack it with grease. Also the type of compression fitting you are installing, and those are used on high pressure side of water makers, PTFE would prevent you from getting a good seal. It is a metal seal, not a tape seal.
"Going like a Boeing." It nice to hear that its still a South African 'saying' some 25 - 30 years on. Well used by South Africans in my days but I do get some strange looks amongst the Brit population here in the UK if I use it.
It doesn't look like your keeping your foot up! Infection is nothing to mess with man. Better to listen to the Dr so you don't loose your foot or even whole leg from gain green.
Yep, definitely NOT compatible, different angles on the taper and the thread forms are different. www.valvesonline.com.au/references/threads/ "Never swap threads if it is a high pressure application. NPT/NPS and BSP threads are not compatible due to the differences in their thread forms, and not just the fact that most sizes have a different pitch. NPT/NPS threads have a 60° angle and have flattened peaks and valleys (Sellers thread form) where as BSP threads have a 55° angle and have rounded peaks and valleys (Whitworth thread form)."
If the ram is strong enough you should only need one also I think the way he added the auto pilot pump to the system the auto pilot and steering share the hydraulic ram, the only place I have seen two rams is where the autopilot was independent so had a pump "stupid french word" (reservoir) and ram to itself usually very short with long electrical connections to the autopilot or where the size of the ram (or pump) was wrong and a second added (larger pump). I suspect there is a manual emergency tiller also in case they loose oil pressure avoiding the need for a second ram for offshore cert. I admire the work they have put in he will know that boat and all its systems before it fails (lets face it it is a boat things fail). I would sail to where he is if I had fiddly stuff to repair and swap cash for skill!
Get a brake fluid tank from car with sensor for low level for your tank connect to red led
Thanks guys good to see another item of the list of things to do👍⛵🏴
Thanks! 😊

Thanks so much Mike! Much appreciated ☺
Very good looking reservoir holder. Bit cheeky though 😁
Hahaha 😂 😜
Very entertaining as usual, I admire your tenacity Rick, keep it up those post it notes are disappearing.
Thank you! ☺
She is going like a Boeing ? ,not a Max I hope !
Great work
Thank you 😁

Dankie! 😊
Great job guys, sending regards from Down Under xxx
Thanks so much! 😊 👌🏻
that looked like a lot of work! congrats on getting closer to leaving the dock!
Thanks Chase ☺ 🤗
Another very informative video, and another sticky note bites the dust.Look after the leg Ricky!!!
Thank you! ☺
Good job installing the hydraulic steering...I enjoy learning new things...I never new how hydraulic steering worked....Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much 😊 👍🏻
the missing spanner never gets old 😂 only a few more on the list !
So close! 😊
List is getting nice and short. Exciting times ahead.
Thank you! ☺

I hope you found that screw ;) Keep at it guy's and "make sure all your flippin oles are closed" drink spitting moment :D
Haha thanks so much! 😊
Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Awesome work!
Thanks so much John! 😊 👌🏻
The engine is getting jealous of all the steering attention.... 😉
She probally is... 😂
Lol :)
8:25 it's for cutting off fingers at the yakuzas
Uhm... 😳😳Not what we were going for... 😂

Did those plastic hoses work with pressurized hydraulics.

Parabéns para você e está gatinha muito linda

Thanks Ian , we using mineral hydraulic oil ☺
You can buy that pipe cutter on Amazon. Just some info for people ...
are you going to link up the hydraulic steering to the stern drive or will you have an independent system?
E amiga muitas responsabilidade mais você tem muitas capacidade gosti
Hey guys, have you remembered to learn to sail 😁🤪😉
Do they not know how to sail???
It was a meant as a joke, with all the work they have been doing to get the boat ready 😁😁
Ricky knows everything!
Looks nice. Will the actuator pump near the sugar scoop remain exposed to the elements?
Thanks. The Cyclinder will but the actual pipe is wrapped. 👍🏻
Dankie Ricky!!! Mag ek vra wat het die hidroliese systeem gekos?
Res-eh-vore here in the US. 😀
That's because you don't know how to speak English (just kidding )
Hey guys, maybe I missed it but how are you going to hide the hydraulic tubes that push your cylinder? Also, will you cover the brass cylinder or does that just stay exposed?
I was thinking the same. Also, will the tubes not become brittle after a few months in the sunshine

Ricky what happened to the leg? Great vid!
Thank you. Had to get an abscess removed 😳
In America at least, we say res-iv-war

That's ok, At least I know how to speak American

That would be gangrene
@@englishmaninfrance661 Ya well I'm sure he got the point even if I can't spell! Lol...
Still not a good idea to mix NPT and BSP even with the tape.

That's funny... I thought I left my 17mm wrench in South Africa....?
If you did... Ricky misplaced that one too! 😂
@@livingwiththemaias I think P.E. demands the sacrifice of all Sailors' 17mm wrenches... There is a pile of them somewhere waiting to be discovered...
You're looking a bit beat up there boet!!
It's what happens when you work night shift as well now to get this baby finished!
@@livingwiththemaias vasbyt you guys are almost there..
how come theres only one ram on the steering french Ricky?
man you were bleeding all over the place there

@@livingwiththemaias All good, if you have any more thoughts to add as to your design it is your boat :)
Water now please
Ricky is using the USA pronunciation.......
Hey Rick , what the hell did ya do to ya leg Bro
Had a knee abscess 🙈
Love your vids, hate that shit scratchy music you used when explaining the fittings....
Thanks 😊 👍🏻
