The film is supposed to be quite lighthearted but in this scene Gene Wilder succeeds in adding just a little genuinely convincing period creepiness to appeal to a wider audience. I would love to see the full film of The Scarecrow (1972) if anybody has a link (not currently on BroadwayHD).
