I changed my plugs today using this video as my guide. My Prius is a 2010 with 225,000 miles on it...to my knowledge first change of plugs. I agree...Thanks for the video!!!
I’ve changed coil packs and spark plugs on the LHD Prius Gen 3, it’s not as bad as people make it out to be! With a short impact gun, I was able to dismantle the wiper assembly and metal cowl in less than 15 minutes, most local shops were charging 2 to 3 hours of labor to change spark plugs and I wasn’t having any of that.
That's an app running on my Android headunit. You can use Android phone for this as well. The app is called Hybrid Assistant. You would also need to have a compatible OBD2 reader.
Hi, what is the connecter / sensor beside the first spark plug for, as I forgot to reconnect it after changing the plugs and now have an Engine light. It came on after driving 5 miles or so. I have reconnected it now but not driven far so Light still on. Thanks.
That's the VVT solenoid. Your car should be find since you have plug it back in. You can reset the error code using OBD2 or disconnect 12v battery -ve terminal for 5 minutes. You should be good to go.
Bro you're a lifesaver! This makes the job so much easier, just gotta hunt for this swivel T top extension now. Had a question, I'm at 150,000 kms and up for the first major service. What are the common things to do on this car to make it run perfect? I was thinking spark plugs, EGR pipe, and maybe PCV valve (it starts burning oil at higher speeds, around 110 km/h and over). Should I touch the transmission oil or differential oil?
What about using anti-seize for the plugs and silicone paste for ignition coil tubes? By the way, that's a clean engine bay! Also, I liked how you compared and measured the old and new spark plugs. What kind of camera and mount did you use to record the video, so you had two free hands?
Anti-seize are not necessary as plugs already have a layer or chrome/silver substance that is anti corrosive. Silicone paste or di-electric grease is good to use in the plug coil but I have not tried that before. Maybe will do it next time.
No there isn't...the guy in this video is lying to you...the coil towers are to tall and they don't bend ..things gotta come off...this guy is in Malaysia working on a POS Malaysian Prius and he's in Malaysia...
It's called spark plug wrench. The one I bought only comes in bigger sizes socket. So I had to buy a 14mm spark plug socket separately. Also, make sure to get magnetic spark plug socket. Not the rubber type. Cause the rubber can come off and get stuck on the spark plug. So when you plug back your coil, it will not sit properly.
You can buy that flexible sparkplug wrench in most auto shops. Else try online shopping sites in your country. Else try Aliexpress which ships internationally.
Apart from the flexible sparkplug wrench, you actually only need a 10mm boxer/flexible wrench to remove the coil plugs. I do recommend you get a wrench box set if you are serious of DIY. The money you saved on going to mechanics once already is enough to get a decent tool set.
Where did you buy these spark plugs ? Mine are brown tip Purchased directly from Toyota dealer part I don’t understand why fake ? Also forgot my Prius is 2020 maybe it’s different nvm
You can refer to this link which have very good comparison of fake and genuine www.driven2automotive.com/blog/how-to-spot-fake-denso-iridium-power-spark-plugs-2017/ Iridium tip should be blue-ish. However, I am not sure with the type used in Prius Gen 4. If you still have the box, maybe check with Denso or Toyota directly.
13 years and 182000km... still same sparkplugs because i was waiting for your video. Genius mechanic. Thanx a lot.😊🎉❤

Your amazing. Extremely impressed.have you also got a fast way to change EGR valve and cooler?

Hi, where did you get the torque wrench setting guide from?
I have 2 questions unkertech. How did you get to that screen at the end which shows the engines rpm? Also what is the tool used at 0:53? Thank you
1. Hybrid Assistant App 2. Double flexible socket wrench
@@unkertech thank you very much for your reply Unkertech! 🙌🙏
@@unkertechforgot to ask what size were those screws that you loosened using the double flexible socket wrench on? Just so I know which one to buy 🙏
@@lionelsnitchie4539 Working on Toyota or Honda cars, you must have 10mm,12mm,14mm & 17mm. Have multiple of these sizes wrench ready.

wondering why this for RHD only? the lower cowl clearance is different, so that you can use a jointed extender for the tool?
Yes. The LHD version have a bigger lower cowl that must be removed. Whereas the RHD have smaller cowl to allow the coil packs removal.
@@unkertech what is LHD and RHD ?
@@faithworksunltd Left hand drive and Right hand drive

Yup, those you mentioned and EGR cooler. Transmission fluid should be changed if not done before. Don't forget to clean the HV fan too.

I like how you work good job
I guess it’s the gen 3 that has to take off the wiper Assembly? Because I had no room on my gen 3 to pull out the spark plug boot
When shud u change ignition coil?
Ignition coils are usually changed only when it fail.
My toyota prius 2014 you have to take out the top plastic because not enough space to remove spark plugs.
me too. I just discovered this :(
How different can this be from Gen 4?
Hi unkertech, where can i get the plug wrench kit?
Shopee/Lazada - search for "flexible spark plug wrench"
What year was this Prius?
2012
Will this also be applicable for Gen 3 Prius v/ Prius alpha RHD?
Yes, I think should work for Prius Gen3 Alpha RHD.
What's the difference between rhd and lhd?
For LHD, the metal cowl is bigger. As such, it must be removed to remove the coil pack.
@@unkertech never mind I figured it out LHD means left hand drive RHD means right hand drive

How about a 2012 Prius v wagon
Why not use a ratchet and extension ?
There are not enough space for a normal extension to go into the hole.

This isn't applicable to LHD.
Why?
Yeah … this don’t work on my 2012… gotta do it the right way. Coils are too long.
It’s not gonna work on Prius 2015, I just tried it.
This is for Right Hand Drive Prius Gen 3.
For my 2013 it doesn't work, clearance too small. Be sure before buying new fancy tool you can remove coil.
You didn’t start from removing the blade motor
You mean wiper blade motor? If that, don't need to remove for spark plug replacement on a RHD Prius.
@@unkertech
Can this be done on a non RHD ?
@@randy1896 LHD model have a metal cowl that will block the removal of the coil packs. So you definitely need to remove the metal cowl.
