A couple of soldering tips, save you old solder wick roll container. Great to put a little bit of solder in to keep in a soldering go kit so you don't have to carry a 1lb role. They also work great to keep a little 26 AWG or 24 AWG mag wire for path or jumper repair. Also I find an acid brush works better than a Q-tip for cleaning the flux off the board. Thanks for the videos! 73
That's awesome, the recycle it mentality, it saves the landfills from another big piece of plastic which eventually ends up in our drinking water, honest days work, great entertainment and make a few bucks, "i like it" great Work, tnx Man!
That radio is ideal for packet. I ran one for a few years with a Kantronics KPC3 Plus. The nice part is that the TNC ran completely in the data connector on the back so I could leave the mic plugged in if I wanted to use it for voice. It must be a thing for these radios to lose their tuning knobs because mine was an odd knob. I found the proper replacement on line.
TO, I want to say "THANK YOU" for this video. I thoroughly enjoy an GOOD in depth video, especially one about a radio repair. I was hoping there in the middle that we were going to get to see the new POT installation and WOW you didn't disappoint. And the solder work was impressive. I have got to try one of those PEN-CIL soldering irons. It's good to see a good old fashioned "Let's fix an older radio" video. I really did enjoy this journey. Thank You again and 73!!
I enjoyed your video. Fixing things is always rewarding. I have the same radio and had to replace the mic too. My mic is the MH-36b. However, I also had an extra signal link and raspberry pi laying around, so I turned it into a APRS digipeater. Works get. 73 W1UTE
I bought my 2600m at a RadioShack in used condition, and I put it to use as a Winlink gateway. I'm not sure what mic I have for it but I can tell you that not all of the buttons work. Thanks for the video.
Luckily, my 2600M, which I bought 30 years ago, is still working just fine. Fixing electronics is beyond my pay grade, ha. Love that power pole adapter!
Watched while working on my own electronics project (wires for a Shelly 1 to control a garage door - goal is no cloud smart home) Somewhat encouraged to maybe crack open a 25+ year old Icom mobile I have that (so I was told) the finals are faulty on 70cm...though I really don't use 70cm or for that matter, VHF aside from the weekly 2m net. Of course what I really should be doing since I'm using my remaining vacation days of the year is completing items on the honey-do list, not playing with radios or home-assistant stuff.
Keep the radio and use it for packet. I was comparing the microphone pin-outs between the FT2600m and my FT2800m, and mic and gnd pins are the only ones in common.
I might just do that... Ham radios standards are bad enough, let alone one company that has many different standards on its own...that all use the same connector.
pro-tip TO - "Acid brushes" off of Amazon. I use them instead of the q-tip method for cleaning electronics, no fuzz, and you can way more aggressively brush the goo off. - JP
151 and 157 Mhz are the MURS channels. There is 5 CH and limit to 2 watts max. Also the VHF marine channels are in the range of that radio. Just not type excepted to TX on them. OK for RX . Some local EMS are VHF . Some police as well. Lots to listen to. Just do not TX unless TRUE emergency outside HAM bands . You can RX NOAA weather . I think you can program no TX on them. Now you got a radio for a TNC. Just 2 on same band and you can talk to your self on packet radio. 1 step at a time. Need all parts for 2 TNC . I never had that problem with Mouser . But I never up loaded a order that way either. Watch out for dropping coax onto Astron power supply.I just fixed a 35 amp one. The PL259 contacted the 2N3771 transistor. It arced and damaged supply. More than blown fuse. bridge rectifier shorted . Printables has 3D printed covers . get Chuck of JEEM to print you some. 73
I have had a few radios that came into my ownership that had been modified to transmit outside the ham bands. I have no use for this. I reversed the mod on my Yaesu FT450 as it was too easy to go out of band. If I was selling this radio I would reverse the mod so it was ham band only.
Awesome repair video. Curious from when you started recorded to finished product, how much time went by? That was a good dust collection, lol. I'm no where near as skilled or knowledgeable as you are, but I prefer to try and fix things myself instead of trashing them or sending to a repair shop.
It was a few months, there was a hurricane that delayed the delivery of some parts. I wish I was as skilled as you think I am... I just get buy and "pay for an education"
I need to get my Adi ar-147 and Kenwood tm-221a looked at and hopefully get them running to run them in my truck and wifes car since i got them for free. 73, kq4hcu

Great ideas! Thanks for sharing.
Ham radio repair is like watch tinkering. Science, Art, and Engineering all in one beautiful package.
You got that right!
And black magic
Good little fix and a great find for that radio. That USB rechargeable Dremel is pretty sweet too!
It sure is, though you gotta be careful not to use it too much!

Thanks VC! Onto the next project now!

I'll probably hold onto this for TNC work for a bit.
I really enjoyed that Steve ! Thanks for taking us along !
Thanks for watching.
Great repair video - I enjoyed this!
Thanks Rob!
Most of those digital encoders are all very similar. Same types of encoders are used on the QMXX series of radios. Thanks for the videos! 73
Good to know! Thanks for the info.
Great morning video. That rechargeable solder iron just went on my Christmas list
Good choice!
Pro tip, it's not a rechargeable iron. I bought one thinking it was, but it still needs power. Much disappoint.

Wow, thanks! Stay tuned ... I'll be doing some more!

This radio has a ton of possibilities with that data port!
Thanks Steve. Love doing and watching this kinda stuff.
It's addictive, isn't it? Thanks for watching!
1:44 Next time on Ham Radio Hoarders. I am guilty as charged. Great video!
Ed! Brothers!

Thanks for the insight. I figured it was "normal"
Great instructional video, thx!
Thanks Doug!

It's great that your radio is still working!
Man, those microphones shipped faster than a DX Commander!
Hard to be the LEGEND!

Gotta save sometime for you to! Replacing finals isn't the easiest thing, but if they are already broken, hard to make it worse.
Keep the radio and use it for packet.

This sounds like a ham nuggets episode to investigate the data port on the back of the rig. LOL. Nice job Steve.
Could be!
A great little radio for winlink Packet Gateway!
Yeah. It would be perfect for that!
If I remember, this radio has the same DB-9 pin out as the Alinco DR-135T MRiii. The Digirig Lite would be a good addition to this radio.

Awesome job 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Thanks for the kind words!
Did you consider contacting Yaesu USA for replacement parts. They will have it sent from Japan or wherever. Great service.
I have, but I haven't had as good of a time with them as you have.
Makes me want to fix the knob on my Radio Shack HTX-10.
You got this!
Howdy T O
I really enjoyed this one.
Glad you liked it! Thanks!

I have had that problem with the astrons before!
@@temporarilyoffline many outher brands of power supply's have same issue .Simple 3D print fix . 73
Similiar crappy encoders used on the 857/d. Always gotta be replaced ✌️🇺🇸🙏
Well I've got spares now

Marine VHF is up there between 156 & 174.
Sweet!
I would use this radio for your packet radio.
It would be excellent for that
174 sounds like marine VHF to me. Though I only monitor that with none certified radios.
But of course!
Where is the link ???
They are all in the description below the video - left box, click "more..." did I miss one?
Sorry, the link “to the radio” went missing. I’ll look again.
I did miss it, looks like it sold already.

I hate being canadian when i see your amazon prices. Those are about double for us
I could send it to you marked "gift" for a small fee?
Kermit THE frog approves! 🤣
He's been watching me for years... judging...

That is a great plan and an even better price.
A little known fact, the M in ft-2600m doesn't stand for mobile it means menus.
I noticed the M and the m... And we all know Yaesu...
