They arrogantly thought they can defeat Israel and didn't expect that Israel would fight back hard even after pressures from many Arab and Muslim countries, UN officials, and those in the west who were naive enough to side with the Arabs in Gaza and the West Bank or who were too afraid to offend Arab and Muslim countries that produce oil and gas or buy products from the west.

Hamas has been wanting to make hostage deal since day 1 but isarel wants hostages without anything in return.
They thought that too much bombing will scare them and they will return the hostages.
