I always imagined August as a very beautiful seductive girl that men can’t help but chase after, James and Betty stop talking after the dance because of miscommunication and its a given that their relationship has ended without any confrontation. Betty looks plain, she represents comfort and stability, she is James’ first love who he takes for granted. August is carefree and fun, alluring and desirable. This fascinates James, he’s immidiately attracted to her and chases the thrill. Going after her is new and exciting, August is a conquest, she’s the “jewel who’s shine reflects on him”. But she has a hard time being herself because she feels the need to live up to an ideal that matches her exterior beauty and it makes her insecure of her personality, she tries to be something James wants instead of being real. So even if the passion James initially feels for her is intense, it quickly burns out as the fall comes in because he cant connect with her and the “thrill expires“ once he has her. He starts to miss Betty, he remembers the intimacy they shared and how real it was. He realizes that no thrill is worth losing “ the one” and shows up at Betty’s party to get her back.
I've been going through an awkward love triangle for a little more than a year now. And I really appreciate her comment about how the evil woman trying to steal your man is a myth because everyone really just wants to be loved. Because I've gotten to know both of these people really well in this year+ and even though we've all hurt each other in some way, it's because we're all so desperate to be loved
