This is the most elegant and ancient design and modern application so beautiful to see behind the scenes. may it continue bringing joy to generations of fair goers
Every part has a spot. It’s really easy to see if something is missing. You can see a couple shots of the central column that have places where pins are stowed just waiting for that step. The only stuff that really gets lost are the tools. They tend to get shared between rides.
I am always amazed by the videos the time spent on designing and engineering these rides is very impressive. Also the leads on these installs really must know every square inch of this ride to also be able to break it down and get it ready for the road after installing. thank you for documenting this for us viewers to watch
Said it before...will say it again...love these build-up videos. Many more rides to see set up, and I hope Pete Rondeau will be there to film it. Thanks Pete for the awesome videos!
This is a really good vid on setting up a swing- very detailed shots. I used to assemble and operate one of the first three Zierer Wave Swingers made- a 48 seat version. Trailerised very similarly to this one, it was the first and only travelling Swing in Australia at the time. Some notable differences in this (clearly) later model: l 1) The tower is somewhat thinner, and the two lift rams are on the outside. Ours had a single large ram in the guts of the tower, pulling cables over pulleys similar to how a forklift works. Wear was an issue, and the headpiece broke once, so I can see why this method was changed. 2) Our unit featured a maze of hydraulic plumbing and solenoid valves in the center of the trailer below deck, all operated by a simple Telemechanique computer. Basically all analogue. This is because our carousel and tower motors were hydraulic Char-lins, so there were massive swivel unions in the base of the tower, which leaked constantly whereas this unit appears to be all electrically driven. My old ride was eventually converted to full electric, kinda sad for me as I knew the old hydro system intimately, including having mapped the entire ride cycle in the computer. 3) Our decks lowered hydraulically, they had their own rams. 45 foot diam, which made our trailer overlength according to our road laws then, it also had special dispensation. Nowadays 45' container skells are commonplace. Before the electric conversion, if the computer shit itself or wouldn't cooperate, I could literally operate the ride by manipulating the valves in the deck, and so keep operating (and earning coin) until a fix was implemented. I simply needed my written program, and wristwatch to do it. I performed this job for a few years, back in the nineties, having previously built the only fully portable Wild Chipmunk rollercoaster in the world. Now my Carnie days are well and truly behind me, but i have finally begun construction of a FULLY OPERATIONAL Lego Swing model from memory of how the ride was constructed and worked. Needless to say- it's quite large, nearly 3 feet in diameter across the carousel! I may post to YT once it's completed. Thanks again, it brings back many memories.
hey mate im also aussie any chance you still have those mapped files where you mapped the entire ride because I want to make a model of it myself at university.
I actually helped set up the older larger version of this back in the day, but it was on 2 trailers back then. One for the actual ride system, and one for the platform and scenery etc.
This is probably the most in depth build up video I've ever seen on this ride (like all of your build videos). Thank you for this, as it answered a lot of questions I had about the ride.
Interesting - I had no idea these particular flat rides completely stow into one trailer, as I've only ever taken notice of these up and running at a theme park and always just left it at that! What amazing engineering that goes into this! Thanks for sharing!
To be fair, this was the first time of the season the ride was set up and it didn’t have a dedicated crew. So I think they were giving everyone a bit of experience before deciding who was going to crew it for the rest of the year
Man now that's a cable chain! Thanks for the video. I was always fascinated with the assembly of these rides as a kid. A trip to the fair and I was building rides with Legos for weeks to come.
I have pulled down and built up many rides here in Ireland over the years, but I have never witnessed a Wave Slinger being built up. Great engineering. Great video Pete.
Great video! I've always wondered how this was set up. I've been fascinated with how carnival rides are set up since I was a kid. You do a great job videoing and explaining the process. I like seeing the vintage rides but also like seeing the new rides too. I can't wait to see more!
Fantastic video. The technical motion concept of the ride is what is known as the eccentric motion similar to the trabant/hully gully motion . The 20 degree twist at the upper of the column makes up for the innovation and experience of the ride. Subscribed.

i would disagree with you. Pretty much all of the accidents I've seen this summer have been at amusement parks (and for the record, in Europe or South America). When a ride is regularly taken apart, internal parts can be inspected that may be hidden for years at a time at a park.
Thanks Pete. I absolutely look forward to these videos and always watch for new ones. I continue to be amazed and the engineering that goes into these rides.

Love that ride but haven’t been on it in a long time but had no idea how much work it takes to set it up I wonder how many hours it took to complete the setup.
This was sort of a training situation. it was the first time setting it up for the season. They didn't have a dedicated crew picked for the ride. numerous people switched in and out over a two day period to set it up. They tell me a crew of 4 familiar with the ride can have it up in 7 or 8 hours.
Now the public knows what goes into setting up a traveling carnival. I was a carnie for 15 years. Looks like they have been able to find solid employees. Its hard to find people who want to do this heavy labor.
Not this particular one, but in the vicinity. Majestic is based out of Dover and I live near Gettysburg, so while I was driving to Delaware I was heading down 30. The York Fair ride provider for the last few years has been Strates Shows. Their swing is a true Wave Swinger made by Zierer from Germany. The main difference between the swing carousel and the wave swinger is the one is pushed up hydraulically, the other is pulled up with a cable.

That
The engineering that goes into making a traveling flat ride self-contained on one trailer is amazing.
Especially when you realize many of these rides were designed before computers, using slide rules and paper.
Thought it "developed itself" with minimal human labor, then in reality it was more of a lego building kit.
You do an excellent job at documenting these rides. Can't wait for more : )

Wow! What an extraordinary large ride all on a standard trailer. That’s some well considered engineering!

This came from the York Fair. I recognized the route 30 signage at the start of the video.
