Go Betweens were writing 'future music' it was under appreciated at the time but is now loved to death. The hits that Robert was dreaming of did happen, only problem is it was 30 years later
they were writing music that appealed to people off the mainstream - there's no such thing as 'future music'
Robert Forster looks like your favorite and smartest Professor, but he has been a Music Hero to me since I first heard The Go-Betweens in the mid'80's. Loved Robert's last album, INFERNO, and have his new 2023 release pre-ordered.
Essential listening for Go-Betweens fans.
It certainly is!
Great stuff, his book Grant and I is worth a purchase too.
I'm always drawn into Robert's conversation. Lovely hearing him talk about these epic albums and Grant. Liberty belle is astounding. Listened to it ,as I often do , just last week. It goes beyond time and place.
Yes interesting point. I've just ordered it on eBay. I didn't listen to it at the time although I remember my friends raving about it. I heard and bought the Spring rain and Headful of Steam singles in the mid 80s though. They are brilliant as you know! I'm looking forward to getting it!
Robert, you guys (and gals) were terrific.
fantastic interview, thanks so much
They're all so good ...just not mainstream pop which was one of the best things about the Go-Betweens. Great writing. Listening to Friends Of Rachel Worth lately.
Arguing about which of LB, Tallulah and 16LL is the greatest is like arguing over degrees of greatness, but I'll never stop loving Tallulah
Yeah my favourite too. Great band. Such a delight to see this i/v.
Agreed. For me Tallulah is kinda like REM's Fable of the Reconstruction - not the favourite album of either band but they both have an intriguing otherness that makes them endlessly compelling.
100% agree with every word you write. If I could only have one, it would be Tallulah for me.
Tallulah is a masterpiece
I agree Tallulah is a masterpiece, but since watching this interview I've gone back with older ears and appreciate even more liberty Belle and 16-lovers lane
“The two best looking people at the time were Amanda and myself. Where did they put us? On the BACK of the album"
How sharp does Robert look with that shirt and tie with the brown jersey! Really interesting to hear him reminisce. An absolute legend. The best thing about us Go-Between fans is that it's an exclusive club. They never had major success but we (the fans) got them. We got it. It was at a level above popular music at the time. It was more adult. It required a more discerning fan.
Utterly compelling.
Really enjoyed watching this. Shame the boxsets are all sold out. :-( I was lucky enough to see The Go-Betweens play a gig in my (then) hometown of Leicester (uk) at The Princess Charlotte. I guess this was around 1988.
This band's songs shamble my heart every time I listen to them... I am huge fan of the Smiths and so on, but the Go-Betweens were a cut above the rest...
Agreed

Utterly compelling.
How many people watching replied "that's the way she writes!" haha
Utterly compelling.

thats the way she writes
My dream is to someday work you guys and Alex g. Plz help me get their attention!
My two year old daughter knows how to sing “Bachelor Kisses” and “Spring Rain”, so they did something right. I prefer the earlier Send Me a Lullaby - Spring Hill Fair period. The (relatively) stripped down sound works better for me.
@46:37 This was played by John Wilstead, their bassist at the time
Tallulah divides opinion for a lot of GOB's fans, but it's weird combination of 80's technology and intelligent idiosyncratic songwriting is actually what makes it an interesting listening experience now.
Tallulah took a shower for an hour!
@@fanmael1 And then she walked down the street feeling beautiful and clean!!
@@richalderson6069 Tallulah your make up needs a shake up!
@@fanmael1 And then you tell me.....😁
@@richalderson6069 the house that Jack Kerouac built,,,.......for Tallulah
Wow, time has past

At the time I thought they were a big name band - I was at Uni though
*I thought Robert was funny when he used to dress like a 10th rate Morrissey*
