I am having a very difficult time finding a video that educates us as to how to fit single "Shafts" to a Horse. How do I know how wide they need to be? How do I know how long they need to be? How do I know where the tip of the shaft should be on the horse? Where can I find these answers? Is there a video showing someone measuring a horse for the shafts? There are videos measuring a horse for harness, how do I know what size shafts to use?

Thrilled to find this video. Disappointed it did not follow through with title.
I am wanting to measure my new mare for a set of shafts. I need to find a vehicle with shafts that will fit her. I thought this video would tell me how. Pity.
Am thinking to measure girth, take diameter and add an inch or so either side?
I see modern shafts are wider in the rear to allow competition horses more sideways rump movement. Is this necessary for pleasure harness?
How far away from the ribs should the shafts be? Is it OK for the shafts to rub close to the ribcage and flanks?

@@nancymclean1982 No, I did not, sorry. The mare I had died and new horse is shaped differently and fits my existing shafts.

The very big disadvantage of modern twowheelers (apart from Bennington) , even if they have a balancing mechanism, is that they are made with stiff shafts, which makes them drive like a farmers cart and are really uncomfortable.
I prefer to drive a good quality antique twowheeler, designed to follow the movement of the cart and the horse.

Agreed, older carriages had some exceptional workmanship and design features.
