It was always intended as a close support air strike. Usually used as backup by boots on the ground. In that role, it has always shined. Even today, A10s in Ukraine, would level the russians. The only catch is it requires air superiority in order to conduct its role. A few tech updates wouldn’t hurt, but it is FAR from obsolete even in old models.
It’s especially effective at taking out elementary schools and children.

Launch of a tomahawk is similar to other missiles, just gets to light off that cruise engine shortly after.

The A10 is taken out of the equation with just manpads. Too low and slow, and way too expensive to lose to a manpads. Works great against 3rd world militaries trying to shoot the bird with Aks tho

imo faking retirement of aircraft is a smart move for the us to project strength for deterrence while also not revealing true capabilities.
on one hand the us wants to reveal capabilities for deterrence, but on the other hand doesnt want to give advisaries the info required to counter us capabilities. by faking aircraft retirement advisaries are left guessing if new aircraft are actually replacing old or if they are just being added in addition.

The warthog is an amazing plane, being able to carry 16 small diameter bombs with its main gun & ammo… and has incredible reliability.
