good to hear Nic singing again after his bad road accident many years ago, so many years away. Nic one of my all time fav' voices, Kate and Nic so good together,
What can anyone say except this is exquisite, sublime, perfect, gorgeous and beautiful music that gets right into your deepest soul. Kate and Nic are simply marvellous.
For a while this version wuth Nic seemed to disappear. I'm glad it's back. Kate's voice is perfect and the lyrics heartbreaking, but Nic's unusual harmonies really add an extra dimension. Truly unique.
I heard this song for the first time a month ago while watching an old episode of the TV show "Death in Paradise." I rushed to Google to find what this beautiful song was! I was struck by the poignancy of the lyrics and the incredible vulnerability of the voices. This has become a new favourite of mine!
My wife and I were invited to Nic and Julia's home in Devonshire over a decade ago for afternoon tea. It was memorable meeting that had a profound impact on my guitar playing and performance. Nic told me that grace notes (what you don't play) are often more important than the notes you do play. He also said that he had given Martin Simpson the same advice but insisted "he still plays far too many (bleeping) notes". How fantastic that his recovery enabled him to write and perform once again. Nic Jones is still a musical genius. PS So is Kate Rusby, a Northerner like me.
Just beautiful.Nic harmonizing beautifully with Kate.So good to have the great Nic Jones back after such a long enforced absence. I agree with Beare Tube but there must have been a good reason. Lovely song,Welcome back Nic,my all time fav folk singer.
I have followed Nic Jones since he was laying peguin eggs, I love his voice and sadly miss his stinging guitar, I have dutifully followed KR since her very first album, the Queen of Barnsley rules!
And I too Peter, having discovered the angelic Queen of Barnsley some 20 years ago when she was a wee little maiden but my introduction to Nic, was through Kate because of her mentioning how she was an inspired by he...Cheers!
I couldn't think of a better song, for Nic to announce his return, or a sweeter singing partner and lady, as Kate Rusby! A better choice would be very hard to find! : )
Requested it on a CBC morning radio show and they could only find the version with Kate alone. Between Nic's back-up and the improved instrumental music, this is my favourite version by far.
Kate Rusby is incredible, but I must agree with Terry C that Nic should have had a verse to himself. Had the great honour to meet Nic on two or three occasions in the 70´s in Scotland, his gig in the Edinburgh Crown Folk Club in 1979 was absolutely amazing, just that my now wife said he sounded like a bleating sheep - I nearly killed her! This is, despite everything, absolutely fantastic - I have all his albums and quite a few of Kate´s, I even met her former(?)husband, John McCusker back in 1990 with the Battlefield Band in Germany. Great memories! Lang may yer collective lums reek.....
Out in the field where the lark it flies Over the earth where my heart it lies Oh, how it sings when the west winds blow Out in the field where no-one goes Oh, how I'm cold; will you let me in? If you could hear me speak, where would I begin? Time it is past now and I roam free Is it wrong to wish you still need me? Is it wrong to wish you still need me? Out in the field where the lark it sings There I was waiting for all love brings There I stood and there I fell Out in the field that I know well Oh, how I'm cold; will you let me in? If you could hear me speak, where I would begin? Time it is past now and I roam free Is it wrong to wish you still need me? Is it wrong to wish you still need me? Out in the field where the lark resides Here I'll remain where my heart can hide Only the lark and the west winds know I'm in this field where no-one goes
Wonderful, and so great to hear Nic on this. I find the video a bit regrettable though, with the picture of a sparrow each time the lark is mentioned (!) and with the sofr-focus Weetabix-meets-sanitary-products tendency throughout. Presumably it wasn't too expensive.
I'm trying to figure out the tuning. The capo is on the 4th fret I think which set the song in F# so also the 6th string. The tuning suggest DADGAD but the second bar has a F in the bass. So what's the tuning here? Such a lovely arrangement!
Yes, the song refers to the Eurasian Skylark, which is most often heard but not seen, a tiny dot in the sky, singing its heart out. www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/skylark/.

Such a heartbreaking song. Nic Jones and Kate Rusby together are a guarantee for tears.

Love Kate and Nic's music - first time I've heard this and I'm in tears - just beautiful.
Lovely. Thank you Kate. January, 2023.
It really doesn't get much better than this...Kate Rusby is pure magic and Nic, well, we already know of his mastery. Simply brilliant!
I've just discovered Kate, and she has made me so much happier than I have been lately. Beautiful calming music, and hats off to the videographer!
Does it get better than this? Both Kate and Nic combine their ability to surprise and enchant. What a prefect duo.
When Nic Jones joins in it always gives me goosebumps
yeah totally me too !
"Shivers!"~~~
Beautiful, the phrase "a shiver down the spine" is insufficient to describe the way I feel when Nic's voice comes in
I couldn't think of a better song, for Nic to announce his return, or a sweeter singing partner and lady, as Kate Rusby! A better choice would be very hard to find! : )
Two of my fav artists.
another really beautiful song well done!
Legend Nic makes this a uniquely beautiful arrangement...
Beautiful song and so beautifully sung. Wonderful harmonies.Love the video. Please listen to the song " The Beautiful Yorkshire Dales the writers ".
Such a beautiful song.
love this song but even better with Kate Rusby and Nic Jones together. A haunting rendition.
Never underestimate Kate's ability to make a song even sadder and more heartbreaking than it already was.
All women can do that! Shmurf me....!

Simply stunning
Absolutely beautiful
God Bless Mr. Nic Jones (and Kate too)
Nic Jones gives it a special quality 🌱
Kippenvel. Zoooooo mooi. Lief.
I just don't understand what's going in on the the heads of the 7 people who felt compelled to give this the thumbs down.
Muppets
This makes me so beautifully sad, no less so now than when I first heard it three years ago.
Is it wrong to wish you still need me?
😭

lovely!
Never heard anything so lovely, and Nic Jones there too.
If only the lyrics were more audible. Such a beautiful voice . Such a talented songwriter.
Песня и видео гениальны. Спасибо из России!

+malledevarda looks like a woodlark to me it's certainly not a sparrow!
+paul mayle Ah.....my apologies to all woodlarks who were offended by this.
+malledevarda The bird shown is a Lark-Sparrow.

Dear Nic🌈
wonderful
Would have been nice if Nic had a verse to himself.
+BeareTube Agreed Great to have Nic back singing.
...not needed, he is singing in support.
Beautiful song. The lark sparrow at the start of the pretty-pretty video is a North American member of the sparrow family, almost unheard of in UK.
Yes, the song refers to the Eurasian Skylark, which is most often heard but not seen, a tiny dot in the sky, singing its heart out. www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/skylark/.
Great version - but the bird at 3.15 is a bunting LOL
And 1st bird on is an american sparrow
Yes would have been lovelier had they used a european Sky Lark, but beautiful anyway.
A bonnie image of a Lark-sparrow, native to Nth America.
Sublime.
