Thanks for the video. Having a key like you did makes it easy to find a key. Without the key, I've found the helmet locks are the easiest to remove. The code is stamped on the underside. If your lock has more than three characters it is always the last three that are the key code. This is true from the late 70s up until the early 90s. As you said, later models had a small tag that came with the original keys that contained the key code. If you don't record the number, there is no way to find the code on the bike. However, most dealers record the key code. If you know where the bike was purchased and you can prove ownership, the selling dealer may be able to help you. The VIN will not do you any good at the dealer or the distributor.

I went to a Yamaha dealership for a key for my 2012 Yamaha Zuma. They pretty much told me too bad...lol. I brought in my Vin...too. A locksmitch will charge you over $100.

Hey I have a 2020 cbr1000rr someone has stolen the keys too and I didn’t write it down in the manual I didn’t think about it but now I have not been able to ride for months. I am currently trying to get the bolts out of the ignition cylinder which have to be drilled out I am told but my forks are locked and im not sure how to get the drill with bit of that size in there to drill it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I just ordered keys from Ebay and had a key place cut it.. just so I have a spare. Hope that helps. Extra keys are a Given when ever buying something second hand.. brand new they usally give you a couple. I don't ever wait when buying anything. I always get a key made most of the time 2. I lost the key to my 1983 Honda Magna and removing the ignition barrel was relatively easy compared to removing the gas cap lock or the seat/helmet lock. SO I have the ignition barrel removed and I did find a code. It was tiny and barely legible with the naked eye. I had to take a picture of it and zoom in to really see it. In any case, the code on it does not seem right based on what I've read about what the format of the code should be. It's a 6 digit code with only one letter- an 'R' in the second digit place. The rest are all numbers. Would this be the key code that I can take to a locksmith to have a key made?

@@miguelarr4629 I'm fairly sure a 96 would have a key number stamped on any lock. I believe it was later that Honda only provided a code stamped on a piece of metal.
Hello I lost my only key and the locksmith wants $300 to come out and make a key I'm not working and I haven't ridden the bike for almost 3 weeks I don't know that it will start now I don't want the battery to go dead I had put a new battery in with the last bit of money that I had. Anyway I have a 2005 C90 Boulevard I've looked everywhere for a code I can't find it. I don't have any tools really to try to take off the ignition switch I see that it's an Allen I'm not sure it's something small like a five or six or something like that but I don't have it and I can't afford to buy any tools. I believe the key you need is a HD117 if it's the side milled key, which I think it is. The HD117 is an aftermarket key make by Ilco. If the bike was sold in America, then it doesn't have a transponder chip. The key code you need to make another key might be stamped on one of the locks on the bike. You need to remove the lock to see it. The easiest lock to check first is the gas cap lock, but if you don't have a working key, then you wont be able to get it off. You can also check the helmet lock and the ignition lock. Go to carlocksandkeys.com and search for "rebel" The correct key will appear in the search list.

You can also check the owners manual to see if a previous owner wrote the key code in the manual. Also check with your local Yamaha dealership to see if they can get a key using the VIN.
Whats really atrocious is that with cars if you can prove ownership [title and/or bill of sale] BMW will ship you a replacement key. Why motorcycles - which are comparatively cheaper cannot implement this beats me. Stories of Yamaha and Honda asking verifiable owners to pay for replacement of all key components is irrational bordering on bizarre. If BMW can secure the information for a 60K car Yamaha and Honda should be able to do it for 15K motorcycles!

It's probably stamped on one of the locks just like it was with the old style Rebel, but you must take the lock off to see it.
