- We didn't really know about this one until Alicja found a great book on Amazon - 'Angus Coastal Trail' by James Carron. Buying the book was the easy bit, we filmed the difficult bit! Follow us as we try to walk the full traditional Angus Coast from Invergowrie (just outside Dundee) all the way to River North Esk (just north of Montrose). Spoiler Alert: it wasn't as easy as we expected!
Filmed 30th April - 3rd May 2023 in Angus, Scotland.
Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

that was great. I'm housebound due to chronic illness so I love watching your videos. I used to be a great walker and explorer but these days all I can do is watch other folks do it, and your vids are the best 🙂
Thanks so much, wishing you all the best!
Yeah I'm the same my friend, hey but at least you have great memories, and we can still watch these guys do all the hard work 😂😂
May you find many more videos to helk. I know a bit of what you are going though.
So sorry to hear that! Must be so tough. If you can afford it or if it’s covered by benefits you should consider hiring an Occupational Therapist. They are trained experts specifically to help people like you get out and about. I know how inaccessible Scotland is.
"Looking back at Dundee in the sun, it's beautiful..." are words I can't imagine being said.
I might go with: "Dundee is the Stockton on Tees (or Hartlepool) of Scotland".
Now for the rest of the video and memories of St Andrews where father-in-law studied and played a LOT of golf, and Arbroath where my wife spent her summer holidays with Grannie + Grandpa...
Absolutely love your videos Steve, I watch them in bed before I go to sleep. So relaxing and entertaining. Thank you 🙏
Thanks Steve. An entire hour to enjoy the beauty of Scotland and your witty, and sometimes droll, commentary. Keep up the great work. Cheers from SF Bay Area.
Thanks so much Jim! :)
Ahh. Nothing better than waking up on a Saturday morning & seeing a video from Steve. Nice one you two. Have a brilliant weekend. Much love, Rossco xx
You too mate!
Seve - Now remember, keep your feet dry, change socks often, use foot powder and Moleskin if blisters start to appear. Such a beautiful walk you have.
I’m off for a long soak in the bath, a takeaway and a pint before a long sleep after watching that. I’m totally exhausted after just watching the two of you complete that punishing walk. Congratulations on a year in Montrose and completing the Angus 😅
Cheers John :D You deserve a bath after watching this :D
How can I explain how much I love this video? Thank you Steve and Alicja for making the hard part for us! I've really enjoyed the beautiful sceneries from my comfy home! Answering to your question: no, I don't think I'll ever do that, that's why I enjoyed it so much in this video, I only missed the smell of the sea and the wind, but it felt like to be with you both in this beautiful adventure (also the everlasting fear of missing open pubs or café ahahahha). cheers!!
Haha so true, I think I'd have struggled without that wee cafe, it was a lifesaver!
You know how to improve my weekend ❤ my favourite RUclipsrs doing what they do best sharing the beautiful Scotland I love. Thanks guys and keep em coming ❤
Have a great weekend Richard!
You did the Angus trail so I don't have to. Thanks Steve and Alicja.
Cheers Ray!
8:10 I love Alicja's assertive 'Yes'! She's obviously already researched the important stuff! 🤘😂
Haha YES!
Wow guys that looked really hard,at 1st I thought it was a train spotter's vlog 😂.
Sometimes no matter how beautiful the walk is ,or how hard,if you do it with a friend or partner it makes all the difference
🏴😎
So true Douglas! :D And Alicja kept saying 'you've got enough clips of trains already' :D
What wonderful Video, thanks for sharing, Scotland what a gye wonderful Land.
Wow an hour what a treat, love trains and coastal walks
Thanks John!
This has become one of my favourite travel channel.
During the sixties I would spend my summer holidays in Montrose as my mother was from Christies Lane, Montrose. As a youngster I always wanted to go to Scurdie Ness lighthouse but never managed to. 50 years later I finally made it to the lighthouse and seeing you both passing it brought back memories. Great video again, I was tired just watching you both!!
For us as well, getting to the lighthouse was a big milestone, rounding that corner and being able to see the finish line!
...... superb. The scenery was incredibly beautiful.
My armchair walk was tiring too, pausing twice to put the kettle on, I was knackered. Well done you two, great stuff.😎🍻☯️
Sorry if this message comes through twice. I was saying how much I look forward to a new video from you...makes my day. I'm off to Egypt on monday, so we'll see how that Adventure goes...for sure i wont be doing as much walking as you guys (least i hope not)😵💫
Wow! Have an absolutely fantastic time!!!! Let me know how it was, never been there!
Auchmithie was a playground my family used starting back in the early 60's my fathers younger sister was married to Gordon Mitchell who was head master of the Arbirlot school in the hills just outside of Arbroath! Wow Lunan bay another great place! So many happy memories! Thank you so much steve! I will have to go up again before 'I pop me clogs ;0)
A wonderful adventure with beautiful scenery. Thank you for the physical effort you two put into making this video.
Thanks so much, really appreciated, you can see the work that went into this one just on my face :D
Steve and Alicja - happiness is finding ice cream shops along the walk.
This is the most important thing! :D
Thank-you both for taking the pain so we don't have to. A beautiful stretch with lots to see ,shame you could not get across the military range but as you said its another adventure for the future, can't wait.
Still hoping to catch up some time soon if we can possibly make it happen.Stay safe both.
Cheers Bob! Aye, we'll be keeping an eye on those firing times and look forward to a slightly more relaxed video at Barry Buddon!
@@steve-marshHi.... wonderful videos! How can I purchase your book as a Christmas present for my wife please? Anywhere local? We live in Aberdeen. Thankyou.
Whats better than a Steve Marsh video... A feature length Steve Marsh video!
Great effort guys, looks like a great walk. North East of Scotland is a very scenic area.
That train line is busy isnt it!
Haha cheers Hamish! Hey and that's only the trains I managed to film! :D
The shot of the sky outside Dundee was worthy of a Turner or Monet.
So easy not to see such, if you don't look.
Great point mate!
While at junior school in NW London, in the 70's, a good friend of mine moved down from Broughty Ferry. I've followed Dundee's football results ever since (he was a fan) and it's great to finally see where he was raised 👍
Was going to do the usual on my Saturday off and stick this on with Breakfast but I feel at an hour long this is an evening presentation that needs beverages and snacks 😂
Haha wait till bedtime, it might even put you to sleep :D
Finally watched this last night. Really interesting. Another thing I never knew was a thing. 😅 Worked at Lunan Bay in the hotel this time last year - that beach is amazing and a lot bigger than you think!
Cheers again, guys.
That was a wee bit tough...ok for me sitting google mapping your trek as you go ..front of the tv....👏👏👏😊👍
Cheers, aye it was a struggle for sure (for me anyway!) :D
My mum’s originally from Forfar (about as far away from the coast as you can get in Angus) but we did go to a lot of these places with my granny when I was a child! Especially Dundee and Broughty Ferry. Thanks for sharing, Steve.
Congrats guys. Can't believe I watched the full hour, but here we are. A compelling watch, clearly. Thanks!
For that you deserve the credit! Cheers! :)
Binge WATCHING with my hubby for last few, weeks,.. BRILLIANT.☘️
Thanks so much guys!
You both did so well…amazing! Thank you 🎉
What a phenomenal adventure! You really carried the team on your back for this one! Huge props for the days of walking (and up those cliffs!!) 😮
The scenery and stops along the way were so enjoyable. Many thanks for giving us this video. 🤗
Thanks Gabriele! This was a real long slog, taken the train so many times and it's a bit easier! :D
Stunning scenery!
Well done you two! I really appreciate the way you let us see the exhausting parts as well as the fun. It makes the videos so relatable! Thanks for sharing your amazing walks!
Really appreciate your kind words, thanks from us both!
fantastic as usual thank you guys 👍
What a fantastic video, Steve. Whilst I love all your videos, this is your best so far. So much information, history, and some of the most beautiful scenery you'll ever see. Especially loved when you were both in Arbroath as have a strong love for the town as being going up there every year since I was 2 and even seeing the part of the train track I remember when I used to get the train up to Arbroath, it brings back so many happy memories and why I love it up there so much so I hope to move up there one day so thank you to both.
So glad to feature a place familiar to you, really appreciate the kind words!
Loved, loved this video! I am constantly amazed at how far you and Alicia can walk! The views were absolutely stunning! Cheers guyS! YOU ARE ROCKSTARS! As always, look forward to the next video!!
Haha thanks Mary! It was a real slog this one, especially day 3, but we are so happy to have made it!
Amazing effort guys, what a walk that was👍Another cracking video Steve, Scotland at its best👌
Cheers Rab! Great to get to know our own wee stretch of coastline!
So fantastic, the effort you put into these motivates me! Cheers Steve+Alicja!
Cheers Frank mate!
had a week in Montrose when I was a wee boy in a static caravan and got sun burnt playing on the beach. I'm 64 ,never forgot it, still love getting on a beach. Love watching you 2 on your trails, looking forward to many more.
Superb mate, glad to bring back some familiar scenes!
Thank you.Brought back memories.
Top notch wander…. Thank you both!
Love the cliff walks, thankyou 😊
An absolute treat this week. I love these ones and this was one of the best.
Thanks so much Peter!
That was a brilliant video Steve along the Angus coast. Its an amazing part of Scotland, thanks to both of you for putting it together so we can get an idea of the walk and the terrain. Fantastic
Thanks for coming along Bryan!
I just love Saturday mornings, lol! Thank you for another fantastic vlog showcasing this beautiful country!!! That's a lot of miles for the two of you to cover so again thank you as I would never ever see any of this without you. My very favorite part was definitely Auchmithie, the cliffs and the caves. Spectacular!!! Have a wonderful week!!!
Oh same Cheri, that was a wee gem of a place :) Thanks so much and have a great weekend!
Thanks for sharing your journey 👍🏻
Well done both of you, love your channel.
As usual, a fantastically entertaining video.
That walk looked wonderful, with some marvellous coastline and villages. I also enjoy the more industrial parts, and those sights you saw around Dundee looked very cool.
I walked 19 miles the other day around another part of Britain's coast, between Margate and Whitstable in Kent. Not such spectacular scenery, but lovely beaches, lovely towns, oysters and micropubs.
You make such great videos, and you and Alicja are so great together. I hope you continue to enjoy life and all its adventures.
19 miles in a day is awesome! You sure feel it the next day eh? Well done mate!
Most interesting and scenic route. Thanks for this
Great vid . Really bonnie coastline , surprising how many wee hamlets there is to visit . Ive actually done a bit of rock climbing on the elephant which was brilliant fun .
You are braver than both of us put together!
Loved this video. Beautiful coastal walk. Id loved to go there and explore the coast someday!
Cheers for coming along with us! :)
What a stunning coastline.
Alicia really did well with navigating.
Shame that you couldn't find a way out from the beach at Auchmithie.
We enjoyed every minute of your adventure.
Well done to you and Alicia, you both deserve a medal for that one.
Cheers Tim! We just need to go back and devote a full video to that wee place :)
Another great video on the channel great work & efforts from you both so well done 👌👌👌
Thanks so much Michael!
Amazing just stunning well done and much appreciated but I'm not sure would do it myself but its fantastic nice scenery and great humorous comments along the way, my hat off to you both what a determination to keep going.
Thanks so much Jack!
Awesome Steve once again great to see you both on the trail love it great views always interesting input top draw
Thanks so much Paul! I found this hard, so glad we finished it!
Thank you for sharing this hiking trail
As a newcomer to Montrose, this was an awesome video! Much appreciated!
Thanks so much!
What a lovely part of the coast. Well done you two!
Thanks so much! I must admit it was tougher than we expected though :D
Hi Steve thanks for putting in all the effort to so this walk.
I got tired from just watching you . !
Stunning scenery as always
Thanks Heather! A struggle this one!
Thoroughly enjoyed this trip! One of your best & some beautiful scenery. I’m a sucker for all water features.
Thanks so much Deborah!
Excellent as always! I love the train from Broughty Ferry to Montrose purely for the scenery. Great to see it from a different perspective xxx
Cheers Siobhan! Love that train journey too :)
Absolutely stunning. Well done both of you for an inspiring video. As a stills photographer, it's a good job I wasn't with you because I would have been stopping every five yards for the next photo.
Haha I can imagine! :D
Now that was a most enjoyable walk (but my legs are killing me)😆...Thank you for all your efforts.😎
Another well made and interesting content video. The lunchtime scoff in Carnoustie looked good 👍
A welcome break, but see starting up again? :D
Once again another great vid thank you both
Tremendous achievement, wonderful walk, lots of wonderful scenery, great footage and bonus Scot Rail coverage 👍
Cheers Russell! A perfect transporting route :D
Thank you so much Steve and Alicja for this fantastic video of the Angus coast. There are so many highlights on the walk that you could easily go back to several places and make specialised videos about some of the places you visited. Thank you not only for the video, but also for the effort you put into walking the path. I could never manage it and I could tell it was tiring for you Steve, even Alicja seemed to be feeling the strain at times. Well done, and again thank you. 👍😆
Cheers Ian, aye, I really struggled on day 3! Thankfully that cafe gave me a bit of a boost, but getting up each morning to go back onto the trail was the hardest part :D Really appreciate you coming along with us!
Well done guys. An amazing achievement, and another great video.
Thanks so much for coming along with us!
WOW !!! Loved your video , you two are amazing !! I have only been to Scotland once but hope to visit the west coast next time . I'm a new subscriber and I'm glad I found you two !!
Steve, you're inspiring me now! I couldn't manage to walk even a fraction of the whole thing, but the area round the City Dock in Dundee looks interesting and might be within my capability, if I gave my self plenty of time! The bit between Broughty Ferry and Balmossie is probably just about do-able too, or between there and Monifeith, whose beach is a real walk down memory lane...! (I can't do the whole distance from Broughty, unfortunately - as I didn't have much energy left just walking from the town to the castle, there...).
The railways stations at Balmossie, Barry Links and Golf Street are served by just two trains a day in each direction - a frequency that doubled after many years of just one a day, a few years ago... As I expect you'll know, such minimal services are usually provided at wayside stations the railway would ideally like to close, but doesn't want the expense of going through the lengthy legal procedures of doing so, and so they're known as "parliamentary" trains - intended solely to meet a minimum legal requirement in order that a station remains technically open. They did have at least a 2-hourly service running most of the working day until 1992, when most of the Dundee - Arbroath local trains were withdrawn to facilitate faster Aberdeen services in the run-up to the privatisation of British Rail - and for a dozen or so years, even the very centrally-placed Broughty Ferry station had only three or four trains a day. (Originally running from Dundee East (closed 1952, along with Easthaven, Elliott Junction, St Vigean's, Inverkeilour, Lunan & Usan stations), most of the trains originated in St Andrews thereafter, running via Tayport and Dundee until those lines were closed in the 1960s, thanks to both Dr Beeching and the construction of the Tay Road Bridge). I take it you're also aware that the latter is also built upon infilled docks where it lands in Dundee? Dock Street was previously right at the water's edge, hosting both road and rail traffic - as a single line ran along its' quayside, providing a physical connection for goods traffic between Dundee's East and West (terminal) Stations. Thanks also for the Auchmithie detour - I've also not been there but heard is is very picturesque - and now I know why! Oooh, those dunes at Montrose! (Apologies - it was a particularly memorable school trip, the best part of 50 years ago...!)
Superb comment mate, thanks! And we were so glad to finally get to Auchmithie!
Great scenery and a great video as usual. My days of long walks are over so I'll just have to let you two do them for me!
This will be a struggle just to watch :D
Beautiful walking. I need to explore Scotland much more. Your videos are always so uplifting ❤❤❤😊
Great video Guy's thank you lovely Views.😊
Cheers Christopher!

Thanks for sharing this. It brought back some happy memories for me, remembering many names and places also being able to see these places again after some 50 years away. Keep well and safe. James.
An absolute pleasure James!
Loved that you two are so easy to watch but the scenery is great 👏
Thanks so much Graham!
How great was that! Well done to both of you for finishing. The scenery , the sound of the sea and seagulls captivated me. Good idea walking towards your vehicle. Not for the faint hearted but... if i had a takeaway dangled infront of me for the whole walk well i think it would give me incentive😂. Thankyou again for taking the time and us along with you.
Yes Sarah, I wish I could say I was thinking about the video, but I was only thinking about filling a big gap in my stomach :D
Very enjoyable really like your videos, I couldn't do these walks myself so it's fab to be taken along.
I enjoyed this so much! Such a beautiful and fascinating area. I only wish I could have walked it with you! Love your videos.
