Thanks Sir LGR! :)
How can I run part 1 on Win 7 ?
Do Driver 1999.
Hello sir how are you
Hello, LGR, Can I ask you a question? I'm working on a project related to Midtown Madness series and I was wondering if you could help me. I 'm asking people who are fans of the game.
I was the lead designer on Midtown. Fun to look at it again :)
Thanks for stopping by, it's an honor :) I still go back to play it rather often, it's really something special to me.
+Fred Markus Thanks for the game, i had a lot of fun playing it as a kid!
+Fred Markus wow amazed to see the lead designer comment in here.
+Fred Markus Thanks for making one of the games that defined my childhood!
Thanks for creating this gem.
I played this for hours and hours, just exploring. Trying to find every building that you could get into.
same bro it was simple and futuristic at the same time back in the time
exactly
Yeah I did that too. There was a jump at one of the drawbridges that if you did it right, you went through a building and landed in a tunnel
Yeah ! First I had MM demo, and I knew every pixel of that few sqaure meters of demo, than my friend told me, he has MM2 and since than I knew London and SF better than locals :D
same here
i played this game for years... no wait... i played the demo for years...
awww dam that happened to me with MM2 😞
Same thing happened to me with the demos of the first Motocross Madness and Monster Truck Madness 2 from the Windows 98 SE CD.
Windows OS ah yes... Playing the motocross madness and monster trick madness demos while listening to the debut album of gorrilaz... Those were the days
Duuuude me too. Wasn't motocross madness demo the one with a HUGE cliff wall that you had to ride and jump off??
***** yeah and when you somehow made it up the huge level wall cliff the game would litterally catapult you off of it again
Swimming with the fishes ;). people who played this will know
I thought it was sleep with the fishes
O ye
Gingerbreadhoez sleep with the fishes 😂😂😂
匚яαzγ 廾ατεя 七廾 where did you get it?
More tea, vicar? (Yes, I know that's from the second one)
Who else was driving the bus around acting like a bus driver
No way you did that
I was stopping on specific locations too like a custom bus stop. Made the loop many times. Thanks for bringing this up. If I'd get bored. I'd take the mustang and play Taxi.
yeah yeah I was one of them
@@NikhilBlr facts bro 😂😂 good times, good times
Who used to put the snow in there so you would "drift" or at least lose a bit of grip.... Oh yeah and i used the mouse to steer... Shit was epic
Childhood memories...
Midtown Madness was (and still is) the bomb.
Thanks for the review.
I have all three of them. This series i feel needs a reboot. Or at least an HD remake.
It was my favourite game growing up, I played a demo of it when I was a kid and my parents eventually got me the full version on christmas, it felt almost magical opening the box. The music too, was really great.
CraptasticJack Really you're right, while Microsoft don`t think to do the same they did to Zoo Tycoon.
BroilerTM yup :)
For real man , it will always be in my heart
This game was my life when I was younger I literally played the shit out of it I would pretend to be a bus driver or cop sometimes following traffic rules or else jumping draw bridges like a nut. Nothing felt better then unlocking that GTR1.
I remember playing this when I was like five and six and seven and being in awe at how cool the crashes were. Especially because I live in Chicago and my dad worked for 93.1 xrt the radio station, and knew Marty lenertz (the narrator) I got to meet him numerous times and remember talking about the game with him. I lost it when I was seven and I was heartbroken, and it gradually went into the back of my mind. Nine years later, I saw it on Wikipedia and it all came back. I bought another copy and was hooked all over again. Unfortunately I was too young to appreciate the multiplayer when it was still up and running, and now I think im gonna go and add some mods to it. It's great to hear that the game had such a following and still kind of does. One of the defining racing games leading into the new millennium. Btw I live your references and understanding of Chicago. I lived there for most of my life (in the suburbs now) and was able to relate to everything you said. The Da bears and the cubs works series joke had me laughing really hard
Who tried to run over a pedestrian and never succeeded 😂
me
king kong me
🙋🏾♀️🙋🏾♀️😭
I do it all the time in gta 5. I pretend there the people that fucked me over
Now you can in midnight club 1 XD
My brother realized early on that because cars in this game were so delicate, he could just use a city bus for the checkpoint races, take some shortcuts and position the bus across the course in just the right way so that the other drivers would just crash right into his bus at high speed. Once all of the computer drivers had wrecked their cars to the point of not working anymore, he would then finish the race at his own pace in the bus. Also, because the number of points you got depended on how fast your car was in comparison to the others, he got maximum points for doing this.
I did same😂
I remember playing this on my dad's Win98 PC in like 2003.
Topias Salakka Joel?
Marcuss Tonito wut
it was a joke dude, calm down
Marcuss Tonito I'm calm. xD; You can't know It was a joke If It was on text.
it was a great racing game same as need for speed 1 at this era
First game I've ever played. The memories....
My first too :D
my first tooooo, still have it on my compaq :)
+Maarten Smits my first too, i got an xbox just to play part 3.
same applies to me
Same here.
My time as a kid with this game lasted for hours upon hours. My dad back then was incredibly strict, and the only way I was allowed to play was in the Cruise mode, obeying traffic laws and such, not being allowed to do the races figuring I'd grow up to be a reckless maniac. I felt so cheeky when he wasn't around and I could play however I wanted.
This is amazing.
I know, what a cool story, eh?
@@Dinoracha Are you from Canada? Asking because of the "eh".😂
It s just pure bliss how a mass group connects with this game. I was 7 or 8 when I played this an now a grown adult watching this game here. Absolute fun to play just feeling Nostalgic.
That mannual Transmission with dashboard cam was gem!💎
once again, thanks for reviewing these games. so much nostalgia! :D
The game looks really good, honestly. We have the fake 8 bit sprite based games, why isn't there a genre for 3D games that look straight out of the late '90s/early 2000s?
I don't think we've quite passed that threshold for those games to be super nostalgic yet. Give it another 5 years or so :)
Lazy Game Reviews
Well, I know _I'm_ not going to wait, I'm going to get on the bandwagon early.
I've actually seen some games like that. Devil Daggers comes to mind. I think what needs to happen is for the people who grew up with those kind of games (like me) to get into game development. I'd actually love to make a game with a low polygon models aesthetic.
Or look up BallisticNG.
There isn't a specific genre basked on this but you could call these Y2K era games or fifth generation console-era games.
There are people who make mods for games like these (including Midtown Madness) in the style of the game they are made for, rather than just a model conversion from a newer game.
"Sleeping with the fishes"
This game was like GTA, just focused 100% on driving! Such a fun game!
Cause it was developed by rockstar san diego
Hmm yea didnt even realize Rockstar San Diego developed this :D Someone commented that but the comment is now gone. Checked it and its true!
Another one similar to this (same developers) is the midnight club series. It's like GTA but 100% on driving.
@@Ex0rz actually angel studios was bought by take-two in 2002. so it wasn't rockstar who developed this game.
@@Abel-Alvarez yea it was a collab between angel studios and rockstar before rockstar bought acquired the former
The graphics were way to advanced for it's time. Got to play it first around 2003 and it still blew me away
This game started a lifelong love affair with Chicago. Took the train there in 2006 to go to Lollapalooza and it was amazing to finally visit some of the places I had crashed a city bus into
lol I love the Cubs world series joke, but now they won XD
Is it referenced from Back to the future
the menu screen music is pure nostalgia, that funky hip tune. brings me right back to end of the 90s. this was the first open world game I played and it felt so incredible back then. I miss those days! the screaming when you crash into the white bus 😆. MM2 had better textures and more "alive" feel, better game overall, but MM1 had better overall music. MM2 also had a ton of different commentators and funny quotes, and made you feel like you were playing the game in a room with tons of people watching
The open world premise blew me away. I cruised around for hours exploring the city. I loved how you can change the weather and time as well.
Like, the only 3D game that worked on my computer at the time!
Freako same
O shit Freako!!!
Same Here Freako
@@w.w.7469 shut up, fatass!
This was my first PC game, and my favorite car was the Cadillac Eldorado.
Me too!, back in 2004 beside Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Such a nostalgia trip! Spent many many hours with this game back in the day.
I would go to my local computer cafe and play this game for hours. I never even bothered to do the races cause the cruise mode was just ridiculously fun and never got boring.
Man that is nostalgic... I grew up playing this game along with Beetle Crazy Cup were the first 2 racing games I played on my PC and both are blast to play
Zeeshan Rafique beetle crazy cup... you just reminded me of playing that!
Yes that game is amazing! I remember competing "Jump" race with my siblings
reminds me good memories
omg you are so meee
M. IJLAL high five
This was the first open-world 3D car game I ever played. A friend of mine had it, and when he showed it to me, I went crazy about it, and played it all night at his house. I feel kinda bad about taking over his computer for hours now... but the game was so cool at the time, I couldn't help it!
I did exactly the same, and I'd ask to stay overnight at his place just to play this. He had a 32MB Diamond Stealth S3 card that could play it wonderfully and it just blew my mind.
The old days when I use to play this game for hours and use to laugh on the captions when the game is over like in the end of the video LGR can you put this and midtown madness 2 on your lgr store ?
This made me miss 90s games and my childhood :(
Same here nostalgic
holy crap, this game was like, half of my childhood. totally forgot about it until I saw this video in my feed.
Shane McZane Sometimes... i wish i cud go back playing this game..... It was a quarter ofy childhood and in today's world of the ps4 and high quality gaming, such beautiful classic are no more appreciated. The nostalgia's killin' me. I wish i cud take a break from the games i play now and play MM but i lost the CD and all the data in my 10 yr old laptop sitting in my cupboard's bottom drawer.
You could just download it off the internet.
Centurion Ya but wat safe way is there for Windows 10?
No
Windows 7 still can run it tho
Excellent game. I think you’d like the first Midnight Club on PS2, which is very similar but more “tuner” themed. It’s also developed by Angel.
One of my childhood classics!
Great review. Yes, I remenber this old Microsoft classic. This game is still a blast.
I freaking loved this game , good old days 🌹❤️🔥
Would love to see a Midtown Madness 2 review! This was great
Thanks! Still planning to cover that :)
Awesome! I recently rediscovered these games and you were the first that came to mind to see if you had reviewed them ;)
Please LGR, make a video about interactive/creative installers/status bars!
hell yeah
there is a mod for midtown madness 2 where u can play chicago with all its races too
my dad gave me his CD of midtown madness when I was 6. I'm 20 now, still got it, thanks dad :)
I lost mine.. It had vice city and max payne too😭😭
I can't tell you how wonderfully nostalgic it was to revisit this in the form of a quite extensive review. Thank you.
I remember playing this game back in 2005. It was the Atari re-release, though. I've always had trouble with some of the complicated races, but this game was/is still fun to play.
Omg I used to play this game all the time. Thanks for bringing me back to my childhood!
This was always a great game. I have it still. It's a nostalgic game to me.
During 2010s when i was just 6 years old, i use to play this game with my friends one by one.
First ever game I played on a Computer...looking back this is wild and epic in many ways I can't explain
Fantastic review LGR, this was one of my favourite games too. This game definately got me into the Midtown Madnes series. You must of done a really great job to get most of the vehicles including the Panoz GT and Freightliner.
May I ask how you recorded most of the content for this? I tried with Fraps, but the sound is mute. thanks =3
Glad you enjoyed!
And I record my gameplay using real hardware, so this was actually an old Windows 98 computer captured using a VGA capture card on my modern PC.
Lazy Game Reviews
ah I see thanks for letting me know =)
i know that a windows 98 vm and a few windows comparable mods would work as well
I can fix the mute issue for you if you want .
i figte that out it just mm 2 i have issues with the 3d
Is it just me that's weird, or does anybody else here like to spend time just playing older games like it was the 90's (or whatever year) again? For example, I sometimes decide that I want to spend the week only playing video or computer games from a specific year.
It's not you, I would play Driver,Duke Nukem 3d,and SimCity 2000
i remember whenever i crashed into the canal.... the game tells me "no time to drive with the fish"... and at the time i was around 8 years and this thing cracked me up so badly that i loved falling in the canal again and again....
and the pedastrians had one single dialogue to yell at you if you tried to run them over - "what are you doing".... it was so fun to play XD
Mustang Fastback. Cruise mode. No cops, all pedestrians. Smash those bridge jumps and always try to run people over even though you never will.
This is the way.
This was my first experience of racing game on PC, it was simple and fun. Love it.
I can still hear "what are you doing!?!?"
xD
Chicago people had the ability to super dive or stick to walls ,to avoid collision.
Same goes with San Francisco...
Reminds me of Midnight Club 2.
same devs.
fiattrickbox Just looked it up and you're right! This was made before they changed their studio name.
how about mid nightclub 1 for the ps2
Watching this in 2024 to bring some memories
As someone who lives in Chicago, this is killer. Thanks for covering this.
my cousin and I would play this at my grandpa's house and fall out of our chairs laughing at the crashes we would get into.
A video of cool installation screens NOW!
This is so beautifully GTA lookalike!! I remember playing this game only to do top speed tests with the Panoz Roadster!
I think you have your dates mixed up, GTA was a topdown 2D game the year that Midtown Madness was released. Technically GTA is a Midtown Madness lookalike :)
It was just a comparison with no time reference involved between both games. I have never realized that they were so similar graphic wise speaking, hence my comment.
I have never played GTA 2D, I was referring to the newer 3D.
@Zayd Noor thank you so much for that great info!😀 Indeed the link I was missing!!!
@Zayd Noor Thanx mann
I was the lead graphics designer of Midtown Madness. Nice to see it around again! :)
That's amazing :)
Any fun insights you can share with us?
P.S. MM is still actively played (also online)
MAN does this bring back nostalgia.
This game popped into my head today, and this is the first video I clicked 🍻 lets gooooooo memories
Haha same
So after the cubbies won the series did the physics get better?
Ha!
Damn you stole my joke... :)
I’m a Sox fan and getting shunned and looked at as a bad guy is fun.
Man... my first game. I remember when my dad came back home one day with this on disk after he let me play the demo on his computer. This game was (and still is) so cool! In fact, to this day I still have it installed on my everyday PC :)
+Stan's Tech Videos I had the demo only too! It came with a magazine or something and I just loved the game. 15 years after that with internet I could finally play the full version, because it was never avaiable in stores here.
Taking the opportunity and the space to thank not only LGR for reviewing a game which made my childhood, but the creator of the Archipelago Mod too. Boy, that was a heck of a add-on to the main MM1 game, a beautiful and well worked new map, even for today's standards. I remember countless hours browsing and downloading stuff from MM2 Extreme.
What a very eloquent and beautifully concise review, I enjoyed the words coming out of your mouth my friend.
Graphics are so nostalgic back when I was 4 I used to play a arcade style monster truck game on pc and a normal racing game I never tried to win races I prefer to crash the cars more
I loved this game back then, this was my childhood!
The day my dad bought pc and had this installed I was so crazy abt this game reminds me of my childhood
Please make a video on creative installers! :D
Great video, dude!
That was probably one of my favorite PC games from my childhood. I want a remaster!
Wow. I almost forgot about this game. I used to have a steering wheel and pedal set-up for driving games and it made this game pretty fun. I would also put a small bench in front of my desk and my friend and I would drink beers smoke weed and try to drive around in traffic without crashing. That was a game in itself, lol. The bench made it feel like we were both in the car, lol. We would take turns driving. I still do that with other driving games, lol.
I got the game on a very gray CD-Rom. I also played it on a very gray computer (wasn't set up for color) with no sound (wasn't set up for audio). It was like silent theater racing.
10 years already?
Man, this was my childhood
My first pc game on my Windows XP, back in 2008 i was just 8 years old then, pc games and NES were my childhood.
The OG Grand Theft Auto of the 90s.
I had Midtown Madness 2 when I was a lot younger, I think it was the first video game I had played, and I played it a lot. It did annoy me how there was basically nothing at the end of the Golden Gate Bridge though :P
Only game in which peds escape every time when you try to run over.
You can't run over the peds in Driver 2 (I guess it's the same thing in Driver 1).
Member Midtown Madness?
Yeah! I member!
dude!!! thanks for the memories. i remember my father buying an acer laptop (400 mhz celeron, 64 mb of ram, 2mb of vram, and 20gb hdd. this game was pre installed! i loved it. :) you are brilliant!
thanks a lot for the video, there was this childhood friend i used to have and i completely forgot about him but know i remembered him again because i once played this game at his place.
This is one of those games that should be redone on a modern game engine and modern hardware in mind. If they ever get around to it, they should expand it to cover a bit of the 'burbs as well.
Used to play it on
Intel celeron
256mb ram.
Xp windows.
No gfx.
Can't play on i3-6th gen, 8gb ram, 2gb graphics (game lags)
WTF!
All hail to Pentium 4 and 256mb ram. 🙌
this game looks so gorgeous back then...
I really miss this game! I used to mess around in cruise mode too. I wish they had a remaster of this, even if it's aged already
I still remember having a Midtown Madness demo and playing on the small part of the map for months. Then after a year or so I got the full game and it was... amazing. Great memories.
Thanks for the review!
MY CHILDHOOD.. AAAAHHHHH
I never actually did a race 😂 only cruise + mods, for years!
theres no cruise on midtown 1
@@fzeroacer1836 true😂
it was my generation game cause i was born in 1991
so obviously i played it
obviously i liked it
and obviously i miss it...
thanks for the video... :)
One of the few games my grandparents had on their PC when i was a kid in the early 2000s. I vividly remember playing this on their PC in the living room for hours. Miss those days, loved this game alot
oh my god! i used to play this so much as a kid, and pretend to be the blues brothers, i had no idea about modding! your a man after my own heart!
Rockstar San Diego is responsible for the RAGE engine, basically paving the way for all modern Rockstar games and with games like Red Dead Redemption under their belt, they are doing pretty well for themselves. Not to mention their involvement in GTA V.
Totally, anytime I see they're involved in something, I'm in. It is amazing to see their beginnings :)
How about Midtown Madness 2? I spent way too much time playing that online
That Cubs World Series joke though.
I found a copy of this game here in India in early 2000s. Having a PC or newer games was very rare here back then. I didn't know anything about Chicago (or America) but got hooked instantly and played it all the way until late 2005. Still one of the fondest memories of any racing game I have ever played.
I subscribed simply because I was smiling through the whole video. Oh man, those times.
Do you plan on doing a video about Midtown Madness 2? If not, could you tell me what you think of it?
It is an exceptional game. Yup, a review should happen someday!
MM2 is even better. I still play it to this day and mod it.
Next LGR: Motocross Madness or Monster Truck Madness. Please. :D
Thanks for reminding me of my childhood. I was so addicted to this game back then.
My friend got Midtown Madness back in the day, and I loved it so much that I used to go over to his house after school just to play it since barely anyone had a computer at the time. I played it for 2 days straight the first time I tried it.
