If you followed Floyd's career, he did not always start out as a trashtalker. Watch his prefight interviews before he fought Diego Corrales. He was quite reserved and softspoken. But at some point he did realize that the sport will need entertainers. People tend to be more interested in the fight if there is a villain. He just thought that he is more suited for that role. So yeah, in a way he did intentionally make people hate him to the point they would buy the tickets hoping to see him lose. But it never happened. During the Pacquiao fight he did not do much trashtalking. When asked why he replied "I do not need to, the fight already sells itself. In the past I have the responsibility of selling the fight."
He was a shitty villain, but for some reason his personality suck so much that people watched his fights. Everybody wanna see him lose, but he always was a master boxer.

You have to be a boxer, or at least have sparred in a ring to truly understand why you wouldn’t hear ANY pro-boxer disagree about Mayweather being one of the best EVER.
It’s not just about defense, his ring generalship, his range, his rhythm, his timing, etc..
He literally created a new boxing Paradigm. All these new incredible fighters you seeing (Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Shakir Stevenson, Ennis boots, etc) were MADE following the technical footsteps of Mayweather.
He also helped boxers get paid what they deserve because they DIE in the ring, he’s the one who pushed dramatically pay shares of PPV fights and boxers pay and paved a new way for self marketing.
It’s a shame to go into someone’s personal life to lowball their legacy. Mike himself went to Jail for years, Sonny Liston killed people, etc etc, but we still give them they respect and acknowledge them as greats of greats.
Love him or hate him, you won’t remove his name from the boxing history books.

I wouldn't say he is the most hated boxer in the world. He has loads of fans and is a good example of what hard work and pure dedication to your craft can achieve. I'm sure you'll find people despise Adonis Stevenson far more.

Now, I genuinely place Mayweather over Pacquiao, a fan of both boxers but I'm no longer a hater of Floyd, he's a great boxer, probably the best in the past era.

I have met Floyd Mayweather on several occasions. Every time I have met this intelligent beloved man he's been kind, humble and, gracious. What surprised me about Floyd Mayweather the most is how intelligent he actually is. I have heard people say he wasn't intelligent. Very interesting indeed. I remember watching a Livestream podcast on the Lil Wayne show and he interviewed 50 cent. 50 cent basically told Wayne about what Mike Tyson said about Floyd. Mike stated "I used to hate Floyd but deep down he's like me, try to help him 50". In my honest opinion, Floyd Mayweather and Muhammad Ali preached the same gospel but in different eras.

I was always indifferent to Floyd’s behavior. Yeah he likes to boast his wealth to a ridiculous extant, he had a big mouth, had a not very exiting defensive style, but that’s what made him great. And even if Floyd were to finally lose, what do you think his biggest concern would be, his legacy damaged with his first ever loss, or the the amount of money he makes afterwards.

Mayweather style is the best way to box , its safer for him and his opponents. he realised he can win by collecting points without the need to hit someone's head over and over until they lose conscious . that's the way boxing should've been like every other olympic combat sport that relies on points to win and arguably much safer for its players

Talent alone does not make a great man.
The content of their character can go much further than talent.
That's why pacquiao was much more loved and respected (as well as George foreman, hagler, leonard, marciano, ali etc)
Floyd's arrogance and narcissism is very hard to like, thus for many, cancels out his achievements.
On the flip side, the aforementioned fighters were in much more exciting fights, had better personalities and will always be remembered.
But no one saying you don't have to like floyd, it's just you need to accept that to many, hes viewed as an arrogant, selfish and cocky knucklehead

The reason he's not respected is because, although he was a defensive genius, he had little else in the bag. He is 50 and 0 because he was hard to hit, and not because he hit hard and destroyed his opponents. For instance, Rocky Marciano is respected, because of the way he won. He took hard shots and fought through them and knocked out his opponents. For those who appreciate defensive skills, he will always be the best, and the truth is, in that department he is unrivalled. But people appreciate the knockout artist more than the defensive genius. It has little to do with his mouth or his nonchalance with money, it's his style. It is what it is.
That a good analysis but if you understand and acknowledge the history of Black boxers you have to admit that he's a Black man. A Black man that was dominant for 25 years. He did what he was supposed to do as a boxer...hit but not get hit.

Since the 50 - 0 seems to be the thing that gives him legendary status, I mentioned Marciano, and contrasted their styles, and why one was way more entertaining than the other. Black or white had nothing to do with it. I could have mentioned Calzaghe also, another fighter with no losses. But you get the point.
There are other black boxers who are also ATG's, but they did get hit, and they did lose. Louis, Ali, Foreman, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis etc etc, and they seem to get a lot more respect somehow, and it's merely down to the fact that when they stepped into the ring, they put on a show and not only boxed, but fought, hit and got hit and entertained the crowds.
As skilful as Mayweather's performances were, they were not memorable, and for the best part could be considered quite boring, where he actually ran for much of the fight, as in his fight with Pacquiao.
So like I said, although a pure pugelist might appreciate his unrivalled defensive ability (as I do) he will never be as respected as other ATG's who took losses, regardless of their skin colour. He will always take a back seat to them in the boxing hall of fame, and it has nothing to do with his personality, but with the fact he was boring in the ring.

@@warrenlewis3977 I understand your point about the stats, and there's no doubt they're impressive. But he never hit the canvas, got up and went on to win. Lost his title and came back to regain it. Granted, his defensive genius is the reason for that, but it's these things that endear a boxer to the public. In a sense, he's a fighter that never overcome adversity in the ring, and that's due to his super defensive style. If he had sought the knockout more often, he would have been more vulnerable for sure, but he was always way too cautious to do that, and for that, he's not respected as much as others who took a loss.
I didn't mention race, you did. Personally, I don't care if he was black, white, pink or blue, he was a defensive genius and a great counter puncher, but his very cautious style made him boring.
