  • If you are interested in planted aquariums then “Ecology of the Planted Aquarium” by Diana Walstad, is a must have. I don’t normally even read books but I read this book from front to back. It is an incredible resource. It is science heavy.

Although I don't keep dirted tanks, I still found Walstad's book to be an excellent resource for understanding the science of aquatic plant keeping. The other book that is just indispensable is Christel Kasselmann's "Aquarium Plants," the second English version of which came out in 2020.

I bought the book a couple months ago! We moved so I rescaped all my tanks and used organic soil. It’s only been a couple weeks but so far so good. Thanks for all your tips and great looking plants!

There is a book called Aquarium Plants The Practical Guide. I think you would enjoy that book as well. It is by Pablo Tepoot. Foreword by Brad Mclane. It is another that you will go back to often.

Anyone who is serious about growing aquarium plants needs this book in their library. I don't grow plants exactly like Walstad does but I use soil so the differences are minor. I refer to this book to help me understand things as an amateur. It is the only scientific work (written by a scientist) available publicly on the aquarium (at least I don't know of any other). This book goes 'beyond' the Walstad method. It is aquarium science.

i've been running walstad inspired aquarium with added compost soil since december.
in the beginning some plants are dying. but after 2 months I think I could grow anything in there. low energy, high yields!
psst. it's best for dutch style aquascaping. 😂

I was actually able to check this book out at my local library. Dirted tanks are the easiest and best tanks I've kept

I think getting 100 ml of water from the sea or the natural lake would bring in the ecosystem in the tank. I took 100 ml of sea water for my fresh water aquarium. yes ofcz i added fish food and let it ran with powerful aerator that sticks to the wall of the aquarium for few weeks until I changed the water for 4 times*. after that the water started to stay fresh and I only had to changed twice in a year. My tank is closed so evaporated water forms dew drops on the cover and fall back in tank.
    * I change 25% of the water in one change, so changing 4 times means I change the entire water tank and the salt has almost left the tank.
