Well done You! I have never, ever seen such fine home culture. A grower after my own heart. I have been a Commerical Cattleya grower, in "The States" for over 25 years. Now retired I am in the fog belt of San Francisco, CA. Still growing. If this is indeed the spot where you grow, never change a thing. Stumbled across this video on our You Tube totally by accident. Well done. Nomenclature is spot-on.
+Jeanne Uzar Hello Jeanne and sorry for the late reply. I don't seem to be getting notifications from RUclips at the moment. Thank you for such wonderful praise. You are very kind and make me blush. Yes, the cattleya is grown on a windowsill but put in the greenhouse in summer. You have made my day :)
What a well grown plant. Six strong growths! Thanks for sharing the lesson learned about not staking too early. It is good to be reminded that most plants need some physical stress, even if it is just gravity, to strengthen and firm up developing tissues.
Your cattleya would probably be everyone’s dream to have in their orchid collection! It’s just beautiful and so healthy looking! I truly enjoy your channel..thank you for sharing!
Hello from Jamaica !! You have a truly spectacular bloomer. I got a division of this 2 months ago and already have a pretty big new growth, I just love the colour combination and scent ... just everything about it is awesome. Happy growing.
missimjam Well hello there to Jamaica. Congratulations on your new plant. You will never be disappointed with this one! Thanks for watching and taking the time to message.
WOW! C.G.Roebling is Absolutely BEAUTIFUL :-) it is like you are holding a huge bouquet there, those flowers are truly so breathtaking to see, and i can see why she is your favourite, shes a beauty indeed, thanks so much for sharing Rachel and have a magnificent evening ahead XXXXX
Beautiful with white and violet colour flower. C.G Roebling orchid. And your other video monster orchid with the orange colour so so beautiful. I’m new to orchids and where I live it’s impossible to find these types of orchids. Your orchids or so beautiful, I love the large flowers and colour. Some look like it have a bulb growing from the top of the container. Wow. Thanks for the videos
I have seen this video maybe ten times and I can't get enough of it. Your C.G. Roebling is the most beautiful cattleya orchid I have ever seen. Cattleyas are my favorite orchids and a I own quite many myself, but none so wonderfull. But it is a joy to see your, so I hope you will feature it in more videos.
+Roxana Pioaru Thank you so much for such wonderful comments. You have really made my week. I adore C.G. Roebling too, not least of all because it is relatively easy to grow well, especially if you allow it to get big enough. I remember the first time it flowered like this for me I thought I should just give up growing orchids because I could never surpass it with another. But, somehow, I didn't give up :) Thank you, once again, and happy growing.
+Gardening at Douentza I have just purchased a C. G. Roebling indigo blue. I was't able to find Sentinel, but I really hope it will be much alike it. And this wonderful video is the thing that made me search for this particular orchid and buy it.
+Gardening at Douentza If it turns out to be different, maybe sometime in the fluture you can send me a division of yours and I send you a division of mine.
Your C.G. Roebling "Sentinel" looks fantastic! I picked one up yesterday because of this video. Can't wait to see what it does since there is a sheath already developed!
I am so jealous right now you have no idea, even when not in bloom, those Catts look so luscious and nice, quite yummy :) great job on training the shoots and the flowers are spectacular!
Isn't RUclips great. It makes us all jealous of each other :) Speaking of which, watch out for my next orchid video! PS C.G. Roebling has a really beautiful, spicy scent, which I completely forgot to mention!
Gardening at Douentza thanks for the tip, I am definitely looking out for some big flowered catts and also these type of thinner petal catts.. I seem to have pretty small flowered ones :P I don't mind though they are fragrant but still :P wouldn't mind a little monster like this
Just. great! But NO! That is not desease! That is great love and wonderful spirit of your soul and mind. Excellent result of your loving green thumbs. Please, make a LONG good video about all conditions that you create for your so healthy looking plants. It looks that you grow them inside without having green house or covered balcony. I have noticed that you have two windows, that is very helpful to give sufficient light for your cattleyers. What about humidity? I am so amazed and looking forward for you next video. thank you, best wishes, Victoria
TheVictoriasworld Hello Victoria, and thank you for your kind words. My cattleyas grow on a windowsill all year, except June to September, when they are in the greenhouse. I will make a video when they go out for summer for sure. I use humidity trays with clay pebbles. Thank you for watching.
SO beautiful! My favs are Cattleyas because I not only need to love the flowers but more so the greenage. :) Many Orchids have nice flowers but if I don't like the plant, forget it...well ALMOST. lol
Gardening at Douentza Hi again! Do you give her artificial light during the winter, or is the light that comes through the window enough? Is it a South facing window?
It's nice to know a c. purpurata hybrid doesn't need more than the natural light coming from a window during the winter. I thought it would need a lot of light, and that's why I never had the courage to buy one. I have my cattleyas under lights during the winter, but their window is facing northwest. I probably won't buy (for now) a c. purpurata or hybrid, but after this I think it would probably be happy in my place. Right now I'm soon running out of space for large orchids, but maybe someday. :) Thanks!
It was fewer than four flowers per sheath in the end. I didn't do a final flower count but most sheaths had three. I lost one and a half blooms to slugs but it's such a good plant that you wouldn't even notice! We can compare purpuratas in a while then :)
They say to choose the orchid that grows well in your house. Cattleyas seem to work well for me. I am sure you grow some lovely ones, even if they are not cattleyas. Thank you for watching :)
Dendrobiums do well here also Vanda's and Neofenitia's but i overwater cattleya's or don't give them enough water... as a result shrivelled and yellowing leaves.. makes me sad because i do love them!
Rachel, I watch your videos over and over again. In addition to the informative content, I love how you talk. So natural, not too long, not too short. Have a question. Your CG Roebling has 6 spikes. Are these spikes all from new growths? Does your plant flower from old spikes? Thanks.
Hello Azar and thank you for your super feedback. C.G. Roebling only flowers on new growths. I have heard from other people in different parts of the world that they get it to flower twice I year. But they were talking about a different cultivar, not Sentinel. It has only ever flowered once for me although its parent Cattleya purpurata flowers twice. Happy growing.
Rachel, your cg roebling is just fantastic. would love to grow them in my orchid patio in palos verdes. I think it would do well here.correct day/night temperature and old light. btw, will send out the epiphyllum this week. and found some succulents that I haven't seem in your garden or greenhouse. Do you have a pregnant onion? will send one as well. happy orchiding :)~
That is wonderful. I really look forward to it and will make an unboxing video. I've never heard of a pregnant onion but it looks like fun, some sort of ornithogallum :)
Beautiful. Just wondering ,,,clay pots on humidity trays. Do you water them a lot? Lots of sun in window. The pesobulbs look wonderful. I have never bloomed a Cat. Before
This goes without saying but that orchid is so beautiful and so healthy looking. I don't think I have ever seen such a handsome plant! The pseudobulbs are just so perfectly plump!
Thank you so much for your various and always amazing videos. I really enjoy them all. Please could you tell us if this particular cattleya is fragrant ? By the way, I was impressed that you even made a video in French. Have a great day !
That is such a nice thing to say. Thank you. Yes, C.G. Roebling has a gorgeous scent - a little bit spicy. I always forget to mention scent in my videos. The perfume really permeates a room. Did you enjoy my poisson d'avril? :D
Yes, of course I enjoyed the poisson d'avril ! Happy gardening, healthy plants and lots of beautiful flowers. Can't wait for your next video. bye,bye...
I just bought a C.G. Roebling 'Sentinel' because of this video but what is that beautiful plant that looks like some kind of Haemanthus? Is it a Haemanthus?
+Barbara Rodriguez I am sure you will love your orchid. It is a great one and such a good flowerer. It makes an impressive display at medium size. Gprgeous spicy scent too : That is Haemanthus albiflos in the video. Since then it has flowered (at long last) and is earning its keep. Thanks for watching :)
Hi there. This plant was a gift from another grower so I don't know where it comes from originally. I have seen the cultivar Blue Boy for sale in at least two German nurseries though. I can't remember which ones now though 😁
Hi Rachel. Just wondering if you still have your CJ Roebling. I got one few months ago. Does it need very bright light? Do you take it to your green house for summer?
Yes, I do have C.G. Roebling. It has just finished flowering. I give mine as bright light as I can manage in my environment and put it in the greenhouse in summer normallu.
+MaryG Orchids He is doing fine, Mary. He featured in flower in a couple of my videos but is finished now. It wasn't as good a flowering as before (maybe only 3 spikes) but hopefully next year.
I almost forgot to ask. Do you cut the sheaths open while the buds are small? In this video all of them look as if they have been cut on the top. Is it to help the buds to come out?
Andrea Soilander Yes, Andrea, I cut the sheaths. There is a raging debate on whether or not this is a good idea but I do it. I only cut the sheath when I notice the darkening at the base, indicating that a bud has formed. I do not cut the sheath on all cattleyas as some never need it and don't have a long sheath anyway. Others, like the C. purpurata in the video, for example, take a long time for the bud to come so I don't cut this one until the very last minute. The sheath does offer protection but sometimes can be too tough for the bud to break through.
Follow the plant's rooting schedule, not anything else. If your plant has new roots (check the newest pseudobulbs) that are between half an inch and an inch long then that is the time to repot!
@@GardeningatDouentza Thank you so much for that handy tip. Your video inspired me to get a C. Roebling. I was initially worried of the Purpurata size until I saw the comparisons. Cheers from Australia.
