The death penalty in DRC (2023)

ECPM and its partners express their concern about the statement made by the Congolese Defence Council on 5 February 2024 calling for the moratorium on executions to be lifted in cases of "treason within the defence and security forces". The country has had a de facto moratorium on executions for 21 years, but since 2021 there has been a major upsurge in death sentences. With more than 800 people sentenced to death, how is the death penalty applied in the DRC?
