Late this video but 4 years ago there were similar schools of redfish on the Cold Pass side with identical feeding patterns and it was incredibly cool. Funny but I thought I was this great redfish hunter. They seem to go away with loss of grass and finger mullet schools. Always wondered if it was 'too many" sea turtles eating grass ha ha ha
reds spook pretty easy in my experience. they won't eat if they know they're being hunted, and nothings more obvious than a guy in a boat 8ft away hitting you on the head with "food" 😂. I fly fish for reds in Charleston just about every weekend and you almost gotta treat it more like bow hunting than fishing.
I waded into a school of 100s if not 1000s of reds and black drum once and I threw everything I had and only got 4 to bite out of all of them. Sometimes they just aren’t hungry
Kagen Fishing this year I’m going back, the water is so clean down there ima buy a go pro and hopefully we find them again. It’s so crazy they’d come within 2 feet of my legs and wander off and not even spook when I moved
The finger mullet are stuck in the grass on low tide & there just wait so they can push them out of the grass that is why there is so many of them. They school in 3& 4 point positions to push the finger bait towards one another. They also do this when spooked in large waters when porous are around.
Got on red like that 2 weeks ago. Skinny water. Super clear. Only difference is I was catching them 😂. Caught maybe 10. Sight casted to 5 or so big ones. 20-29 inches. Vudu and savage gear shrimp. 6 and a half and 7 and a half rods with 2000 and 3000 reels. Got on them at 10am-2pm but had to leave. They were still biting too 😭. All from standing on my kayak. Just upgraded to a solo though.
James Kempienski man I bet that was hard to leave!! I know I don’t have the strength to leave when fish are still biting haha! Awesome to hear another guy joining the solo team!!
Black and chartreuse or mullet colors and zip it pass them as they swim by water is really clear and sun is really high work the bait swiftly then pause a few seconds
Throw almost into the grass & drag your bait out at a medium retrieve, they will slam every single time. Also always throws long cast then pop, pop retrieve then BOOM your hooked up. Been fishing here since1992.
From the blue sky, it looks like you were dealing with high pressure. A dead shrimp or mud crab may have enticed them. Or, sometimes going ultra light with a crappie jig or miniature gold spoon. You have to really loosen the drag so as not to straighten the hook. I had that happen with me with flounder before too. They kept jumping out of the water and would not hit anything. I don't know if they were feeding on mayflies or what, but I do know that high pressure can shut down the bite. You got some really good footage though. Slack tide could have played a factor as well. It's hard to be stealthy in water that skinny.
He is definitely not stealthy lol. From the talking, yelling to his buddy, the plopping of heavy lures and leaders, banging around on the skiff, etc... You are right on about it being a high pressure clear sky day. Better to play golf on those days lol
Jiggin With George yah that would probably work. I just like the challenge and technical aspect of using artificial baits. Finding what they want, what depth of the water column and how working the bait effects the bite!
Redfish heaven? More like redfish hell. They were tormenting you by ignoring your lures. I know here in Hawai'i we like to fish a moving tide. We nap at high tide, and low tide, but when the tide starts moving in either direction we go fishing. From the looks of the grass line it was low tide. Even if dirty did you notice an increase in strikes when the tide started moving? Mahalo for another great vid.
Ji F. If that’s hell then sign me up! I just enjoy being able to see the fish in their natural habitat like that. Catching is a bonus. When tide started coming back in the bait got more active but the redfish still didn’t feed. I think they are still full from the day before. When I cleaned the fish I caught his stomach was packed full of mullet and shrimp.
Great spot dude, and that was a formidable fish too. There is a spot here where you can see 30-40+ lbs pacu jumping out of the water and not eat anything you throw at them. I know how you felt ! hahaha
Lol hometown is el campo tx. We grew up fishing matagorda everytime we'd go our dad always told us to stay quiet because we would scare the fish away. Years ago. Lol
Great video footage of reds feeding and how they spook. Don't see too many angler videos showing this. Water clear and you filming at right angle with sun light at perfect angle. Well done. Keep em coming!
@@KagenFishing Will do, couldn't put my finger on where id seen that skiff before until I ran across the vid. Caught a couple of us at 20s. Glad you guys caught more than we did... However it was indeed a fantastic day to catch a buzz.
I have literally never seen anyone make this many mistakes in a long string in shallow water and wonder why these fish are spooking. FYI, gulp shrimp in pearl white would have greatly improved the bite.
R W well now you have! One of the reasons I like recording my trips is to be able to review footage and learn more. I did research and learned about the white gulp shrimp tactic
Open water school fish are a lot harder to spook than shallow water fish. You need a cooler to stand on so you can get a better view of your surroundings. It’s definitely worth being up higher and making a little longer casts. The gulp tactic can be somewhat replicated with Pro Cure. But the gulp is faster.
That would have been awesome! That was the first time I had seen reds like that, they actually had their backs out of the water, my adrenaline was running and I swear I spooked them on every cast! I’m looking to going out again soon It’s just finding a weekend I’m not busy and that has decent weather it’s a struggle
Very nice Redfish.🐟 There is time that the fish are there and they just not interesting your lures. If you will come later ir day after, they will take almost anything. Go figure out why🤔 Good video
Grandpa on my moms side had a house in the west end since the 70’s, parents have been married since like 87, and my uncle (moms bro) has lived in galveston since early 90’s, the way you reacted to these red i think you’d literally have a heart attack at the stories that i’ve heard of them fishing the pass and just basically destroying entire populations of fish. Wish the fishing was as good as it was back then from what they tell me lol edit: try and keep it down just a little next time and also get you a silver spoon ;)
My grand parent bought a place near Smiths Point back in the 50's... we caught reds, spec and flounder right off the bank back then. Blue crabs were absolutely huge. You could catch a pot full of jumbo shrimp with a 3' cast net. Granddad bought a 16' boat with a 25hp Johnson and a 10' trawl. Couple of hours of dragging would get you 50 to 100#'s of shrimp. Yes it was awesome.
That was my yearly limit of "Dude" and "Bro". Guess I have to wait 'till next year to watch another video so I don't get a ticket for too many Dudes&Bros. Oh, and switch to small baits and try talking softly. Sound travels 7 times farther and 7 times faster in water.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the new series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend lately =)
You and your buddy have them too pressured. They know you are there and the last thing on their mind is eating. They just want away from the danger.......you. Back off out of the area. Let them calm down and move back in QUIETLY.
They wanted to make sure you eat your breakfast first before they start eating! Poor guys starved for ever to you realized you need to eat your breakfast

Generally bit better on an incoming tide and... just a tump on the boat will spook them in shallow water.
Tide is dead slack. Fish like current and typically feed off the moving tides.
maybe bc ur fishing after a full moon? idk that’s happened to me before and i thought that was why
Sometimes they want fresh cut mullet
Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!
It actually kinda was due to the amount of redfish I saw.
Dude what is that bright pink lure you keep throwing? I want one
It’s a hunchback
@@KagenFishing thanks, after 3 years of waiting I finally got a solo skiff. So far I love it. Wanting to get the micro power pole next.

Smaller bait or different cadence perhaps
We will be in SLP/Cold pass on Saturday
Try deadsticking shrimp in the pathways they cruise on. They’ll pick it up every time

Awesome job bro 😎😎😎
Get you some 3” paddle tale white Storm lure.
You need to try a much smaller lure I think they are keyed in on small crabs or grass shrimp or it could be a dead tide they won’t eat anything
Awesomeness... Red October. Mullet run and red's and shark's feeding on them. Love the end of September thru November.
John Green yup it’s an awesome time to fish!

They love the silver spoon in the march always works
Ahh very good suggestion! I will be picking up one before the next time I head out!
Maybe try free lining some mud minnows or shrimp

I totally understand, i do that sometimes to I live in SC and do that during the wither all the time
Good stuff brotha👍👍👍👍👍
All you need is some fresh cut mullet they cant resist it. This time of year they get like that in the shallows.
Texas coast Fishing yah that would have worked for sure!
Think I saw yah in churchill a couple weeks back. The GF and I were fishing a drain in a 19' stealth w/honda 90.
Awesome day; that can be frustrating
GetOutTheHouseGoFish it was frustrating for sure. But amazing to see these fish packed in an area like that!

If you notice all the pot holes they are also eating small crabs & shell crabs.
You should get a longer handle net.
Man that was a crazy video
Nice video man!! Can’t go wrong with the vudu!!
PFD_TV I don’t throw it often but I will for sure now!
Heck of a job finding the lure that worked been there before
So hay I’m new and was wandering what marsh you where in at cold pass
The never answered question 😝😝😝
That happen to me last week 😒😒 there was a bunch of reds and wouldn't even touch my bait😕😕it's weird
second time i have heard you say "he is too big for the net"...then glide it into the net on the next pass lol

30-40lb fish!? I bets that’s insane to see!
Bro you gotta stop talking so loud that’s why they ain’t eating😂jus cause ya see them doesn’t mean ur gunna get them
Logan Miramonti I just get excited haha! Also I’m talking to you guys watching. Catching or not I still have a good time out there.
Yea I understand reds can be finicky also but as long as they don’t know your there he’ll of a lot better chance of catching them
Yep. They can feel you yelling through the boat. Also watch your shadows.
Lol hometown is el campo tx. We grew up fishing matagorda everytime we'd go our dad always told us to stay quiet because we would scare the fish away. Years ago. Lol
They can see you. Lower your profile....sit down.
I think you need a different net
Dude I had the same exact experience at cold pass a few times lol. I saw so many fish and they would not bite even on live shrimp
Wow not even on live shrimp!?
Probably letargic if water too chilly? Happens a lot.
Lol picky reds they want fresh shrimp
Dude your a riot😂
I can not control THE VOLUME OF MY VOICE.. 😂😂
Zac Collins not one bit!
Bait probably gets trapped in the marsh buffet time! Throw a cast net.......oops caught a redfish 😅
Mt Goat haha right!!!
Good video kagen!!

Another awesome vid! Can't wait to get my solo out... got a Lousiana trip planned for the spring for reds and specks!
That’s going to be an awesome trip!!
Where did you mount your transducer on your rig?
Love the tones and and your video work doing a great job making your work interesting just keep it going and I’ll keep supporting
Patrick Lucia thanks so much! I don’t plan to stop anytime soon!
great video, Kagen. Do you tilt up your motor when you are that shallow or do you leave it alone? Thx for sharing
Jimbeaux Jimenez yes I tilt it up when I’m that skinny. It also paddles easier when motor is up just less drag.
I saw you guys out there launching!
Haha cool! Next time come over and say hey!

I had the same problem
When I cleaned that refish his belly was full of small shrimp and finger mullet. Looks like they ate before we got there.
Kagen Fishing makes since I was at a lot saw tons but nothing Buggs dsl shrimp but that’s what drives my addiction is the process. Great video
Awesomeness!!!
They gorged the day before
Yup unfortunately seems to be the case. I know where they are tho!
@@KagenFishing nice meeting you on beach and yeah that marsh has reputation of some skittish reds but fun when you get one

“They aren’t eating”, as you’re screaming at the top of your lungs 😂

You can't spook them if they see you they wont eat.

Hey do you know Jeanette Pollard
Brian Smith yup sure do. She was also my 6th grade science teacher!
Never under estimate San luis
D Walterz I never will! Growing up at the beach and surfing has made me very aware of the power that water has!
When they are not biting I go w/a smaller lure & slow my presentation...try it.

1 talking 2 fish dont eat when spooked
Brett Allday stop talking I’m sorry but your so dumb fish can’t hear they feel vibrations.
you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink-- cast a net lo l
Seriously I was wanting a bow fishing rig. I wouldn't have cause that illegal but I would have destroyed the horse mullet

You need to be quiet they get spooked when your loud
Hudson Roberds I noticed haha! I just get excited.
I dont never fish for slots .. I fish catch and release bulls
Brent Billig catching bulls is a blast and I have done both. I just prefer the hunting aspect of shallow water slot fishing.
They're breeding
Susan Hinds I was wondering if they were spawning and I feel like that’s why they were paired up. Good input!
You gotta cast PAST them and bring it to em...not right on their nose
So many and you can't even catch one 😂😂😂
Can you say silver spoon .
Dude stop talking so loud😂 that’s why you aren’t getting them.
Geee Teee I’ve been getting better at not screaming at fish. I just get so excited haha!
Kagen Fishing 😂lol
When they are hard to catch try live shrimp with no leader and no weight just the hook and the shrimp. Use a smaller hook.
Hey I watch all ur vids should Hmu some time would love to go fishin with ya
I always like fishing with other ppl!
We get it they're not eating
