@@ChilliChump started mine last night so a little behind you , using seedsIO for the first time too and hoping that makes it easier later on and less chance of mix ups like last year 😂
You don't need a lot to get them started! In the beginning I would put my seed tray on top of the fridge and on top of my TV box to warm them up. Did the job!
Nice to know I’m not the only one who starts their super hots this early in the year! I started my bhut jolokia, gator jigsaw, chupebrains, and reapers in early December, and they’ve got a few sets of leaves now!
You could probably get away with starting them in February. But the way I see it, if I have any issues with them, I still have time to get a second batch started. Also helps to get a head-start on the season, as long as the weather plays ball! (unlike last year 😡)
I've started 193 varieties this year, I know, I'm a bit mad, and I'll plant them too close together and get everything wrong, but I just love the challenge. I would love to try a Warthog chilli. I tried the Dragon's Breath last year and felt pain like never before.
My CC Piri Piris all germinated in just 5-6 day. 90% germination rate on Citrons, took around 7-9 days. Yellow Scotch Bonnets took 14-24 days with around 50 percent germination rate. I keep 3-4 plants of each and giving away the rest so I have more then enough but its weird as all off them were in the same propagator so they had same conditions.
It is expected to get quicker germination with frutescens and annuum compared to chinense. The yellow scotch bonnets like it warmer than the other varieties, especially if you got them from me. I haven't yet stabilised that variety in my climate yet. They will get better with lower temps as I continue to selectively breed them
@@ChilliChump Yeah they are from you but Isn't Citron chinense as well? I do germinate them in a kitchen where with a heat map I do manage to maintain 28 degrees Celsius. Anyways I have more then I need so I'm happy :) Next year I should have more then enough seeds from them to just throw as many in trays as I need :)
I grew some 7 Pot Brain Strain the other year ago lol those are up there with one of my favorite super hots! I made homemade pickles with an "X" cut on the bottom about a half inch. I couldn't stay away from them 🤤
Dorset Nagas, Orange Habanero and Rooster Spurs all came up fast. One Seven Pot bubble gum so far, no sign of the Rocotos yet. Next round of seed planting this weekend.
Hi Shaun.I'm doing a 'straw poll' to see if the shotglass technic works for me. I've also lined my. Germination Bed with the silver lining I saw on your video ! Thanks as always for your tips !
All my seeds ordered from you again Shaun this year. All seeds started last Saturday 18th January but yet to see any germination, I'm hoping to see some any day now! 🤞😉
sowed mini olive rocotto and flexuosum last week, not sprouted yet but thats probably a good thing now with the storm destroying my greenhouse! Too much going on this year to plant many varieties so just sticking to the ones that I've done well with before. Looking forward to seeing your progress this year :)
@@ChilliChump Yeah, in Ayr, lost a pane of glass and just resulted in others being blown out; toughened glass just exploding... far from ideal. Olive Rocoto perhaps my favourite pepper, I've grown them for a few years now, originally from welsh dragon chilli. Amazing unique flavour (at least I hadn't had anything like it, but I've not tried as much as you haha) 3? years ago I grew them outside without any issues but the last 2 years they didn't do so well outside.
Sowed my chilli’s last week. cc jigsaw Brains and other super hot. Propagator issue temps go between 25 and 30. No sprouts yet. Hopefully the temperature fluctuates be ok
I'm going to start my seeds next month. Only doing Jalapenos and Peach-a-dews this year, I've found that I just don't use all the other varieties I've grown the last few years. I used your peppadew recipe with the Peach-a-dews, then filled them with a herby creme cheese, they were a big hit during Christmas. Also, have you shown that sowing-jig is a previous video? I think I use the same trays as you and would love to see how you made yours.
I have been following you for a couple of years now, since i started growing peppers. I am however wondering, why you dont do more hydroponics, instead of the growing in dirt? For all i have found out, hydroponics are cheaper, and grows faster? Most of the time anyway
And with regards to it being cheaper, and faster growing. Hydroponics can indeed grow plants faster since nutrients are readily available, and it can sometimes be more water-efficient. However, whether it's cheaper depends-setup costs for pumps, reservoirs, and nutrients can add up, and running costs like electricity need consideration. Hydro also requires close monitoring of pH and nutrient levels, and if something goes wrong, plants can suffer quickly. I enjoy soil growing for its natural resilience and flavour benefits too, but that being said, I do enjoy the experiments and growing I do hydroponically too
@ Haha, that is my bad then. I am aware of the massive pepperplant you and peppergeek grew, but other than that i havent noticed much hydroponics... Is that just me not paying attention or are you not showing them as much?
@markrasmussen1399 I show them pretty often during the season. My polytunnel is 90% hydro. A big part of my yearly grow is hydroponic (about a quarter of my plants). I still love growing in soil though. It appeals to my primal side.
