😀EBIKE ARTICLE BY BRIAN HILL
FAT TIRE VS THIN REGULAR TIRES
Fat tires and even medium size like a dirt bike wear faster, so say the bike mechanics.
Thinner tires roll better with less rolling resistance than fat tires…therefore I find thin are easier to peddle.
BIKE SIZE
26-inch bikes are a common size for adults. Riders with a height of 5’ and above are typically tall enough to comfortably fit on bikes with 26” wheels. Taller than 5’5” may be better suited to the slightly larger 27.5” or 29”.
economy e-bikes usually have 26 inch wheels.
Don’t be scared and drown in the details but if you really want to get into the weeds about sizing you can go here…

MOST ASKED QUESTION…
No. You don’t always have to use the motor.
As I ride, I turn the motor off and it acts as a regular bike. When it’s on, it acts as a what is called a “peddle assist”.

Very good comments. I bought a Hyper commuter bike for my wife last year. In addition to replacing the saddle, I purchased an additional battery to eliminate any range anxiety. Flashing lights are added front and back. A rear-view mirror made her MUCH more comfortable. Saddle bags provide plenty of volume to pack food, battery, tools, clothing etc. Now she rides her bike while I use my Cannondale road bike. Last year she did 50km (30miles) on a single battery, by riding for a good portion of the ride. We are both 67. Regards from Canada
Great idea about the extra battery. I’m going to follow your lead for the very same reason my wife shared with yours.
Informative, easy listening and no hype! Thank you. Will be checking out your other video(s).
Thanks. I just did a seniors guide to the Apple Vision Pro. If you have bad vision like me it’s great for reading books.

Happy peddling. Ebiking is great to keep us moving. Way to go!
Thank you for a great video! Best info I have found on You Tube for what seniors need to consider in selecting an e bike.
Glad it was helpful!
Glad I happen to come across your video because we have the same medical issues and I am considering purchasing an ebike later this month for exercise due to my bad knees and fun to get around on some of the trails in town.
Glad to help. I have a friend with bad ankles, but he can e-bike, even though he needs a wheelchair to make it through airports.

My first tip would be to advise prospective buyers that e-bikes handle substantially different than regular bikes. This is primarily due to the much heavier weight of the bike frame, which in turn affects handling characteristics (PARTICULARLY AT A STOP) and braking distances (making hydraulic brakes much more desirable). It is also due to the weight distribution of the bike, many manufacturers place the heavy battery high on the body - making them less stable.
The way power assist levels interact with pedaling also changes the nature of biking. IT IS A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE. Not necessarily better or worse, but very very different. I've been riding my e-bike for three months now and I am still getting accustomed to the nuances of how to best employ e-power/pedaling strategies. It's not just the amount of power, it's how the power is actuated - torque sensors versus cadence sensors - that makes a difference.
And because of these differences, I'd strongly recommend prospective buyers to test ride the bike before buying it. If the bike you want isn't available for a test ride, then try a few models with similar weight/style/characteristics for comparison purposes. At least that will give them an idea of what to expect from the bike that they want to buy.
Great advice I agree.
Some people have a harder time adjusting to an E bike than others… after years of riding a motorcycle I found it easy to accept the motorization pedal assist. My wife took time to make the adjustment but eventually has.

Great advice, just wish the retailers would make it possible to ‘test ride’ . Have rung 5 near me (well, within 15 miles☹️) anyway, and not one will allow a test ride 😡
I was surprised at how mine steers, a lot of roll resistance just turning the bars back and fourth. Picked up a Schwinn Marshall yesterday, $950 out the door. Put it together in the parking lot, pedaled home 2.5 miles! It's a 250 but I don't need speed, it's small enough for the Metro in DC. Found it harder to climb hills with a full grocery load. I'm in the staring at it phase, don't want to get it dirty yet!
At 72 Y/O, I went with a 750W48V11.2AH 20"x4" folder with hydraulic disc brakes, fenders and rear rack. At 66 lbs, I can easily put it in my Scion hatchback and take it to city park and lake trails. So, Nov 2022 I bought a fast GForce T42 on my 73rd bday! April 22, 2023, Beavers Bend, OK I forgot to raise my kickstand and after a long rt hand downhill run, I tried to make a sharp left turn at over 30mph. The stand dug into the asphalt, and flipped the bike! An hour later I was in Idabal OK ER with a broken neck... I'm supposed to get the neck brace off July 13th... Old age forgetfulness can be fatal. These ebike stands have no safety switches!
wow. I must admit I have left my kick stand down from time to time but my riding partner catches my mistake. Thanks for the Great cautionary tale. ....Brian
@@Blhaustin Thanks Brian, Yeah, safety is always #1 concern and like a dummy, I took the stand for granted and it dang-near got me killed! My T42 is a hard-tail like the Lectric. Only, Way Faster! Earlier the day of the wreck I'd been coasting over 50mph... The stand can be very dangerous.
My mobile bike repair guy was at my house today. He says his number one kickstand problem that he sees is where the kickstand is bolted to the middle bottom of the frame. That bolt can become loose and so it’s one of the first things he titans when doing maintenance on a bike or regular bike. FYI
The number one thing he tightens.
This video is aimed at the casual recreational rider. I'm a mountain biker in northern Nevada. With the mountainous terrain and my age (75), I acquired a off-road full suspension mtn ebike last year. This was before the introduction of lower-powered ebikes. I've found I don't care for the ~50lb weight of typical ebikes. I normally ride mine with the power off; using low boost only for hills. With this in mind, I should have bought a lighter 250W model.
I ride most of the time with the power off to get exercise and power on for zipping up hills. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Thanks for the feedback. If you have an already, please click subscribe to get my future videos… Brian.

75 !?!? Dude keep it going!! I'm 61 used to be a bike messenger in the 80's I hope I can still ride at 75...I salute you!
Good info. Ilike to take my battery off & charge it in my house. Two reasons - where I live it gets cold so keeping the battery at a more moderate temp is suppose to be better for it & also for security. The bike is less desireable without the battery.
I drag my battery inside a store when I’ve chained up my bike outside, just as an extra deterrent to somebody fiddling with it. A New battery can be about $200 - $300.

Yes, I am 62 with a bone on bone knee and have my Himiway Zebra step-thru set up a lot like yours, but my E-bike has Fat Tires which I like because it is so stable and just rolls over anything and the tires won't get caught in any cracks in the road and they are a lot smoother!

I think the amount of power you need is very subjective depending on where you live and the size of the rider. 250 watts may be fine for a
I agree with your comments. Heavier and more power can be a complement for one another it does add to the weight of the bike. Like you say it’s subjective. For a senior on a budget or fixed income and I’m a fan of two 550 is just fine. Pay for what you need is also a good approach.

Hello Brian, I'm 65 & my wife is 75, both in great health. We're in the market for some bikes your review was excellent, particularly for my wife. Her wrists are not strong and the higher handle bars seem like a solid solution, thanks again, and happy riding from Canada!!
Great to hear that. I’m going out riding today. I’m planning a few more new videos on maintenance tips. What a Mobile Bike service is like. A seniors’s guide to electric cars seniors guide to spatial photos and the Apple Vision Pro and optional glasses for 3-D viewing of vacation pictures.
Which one do you think I should I do first?
Absolutely right on about the step through frame, I’ve been trying not to admit my mobility limitations ( I’m 76 next month) the wife and I live in Northern California, lot of hills. E-bikes let’s us enjoy cycling. I’m looking at ordering two KBO ST, models in the spring when the weather gets warmer. KBO e-bikes seem to have better quality components than the Walmart models. Anyway thanks again for your advice.
Please note. Your wife and yourself may require 2 totally different bikes.
I appreciate your suggestion. I’m planning a follow up video about maintenance on the Walmart bike and the other the bike go tracks after one and a half years

I’m a seniors & bought an e-bike. It nearly killed me. I put my experiences on RUclips. Search with my name & word like Bike trails & Buy the right e-bike. Happy biking.
Will check it out. The bikes are heavier with that battery so falling with the battery between your legs is problematic.
My wife fell off her ebike and was soured on it for a while. She’s back at it again. I met a fellow last week who has an E bike trike. He rides it on the beach in Corpus Christi Texas. I’m planning an update video on two years of a bike wear and tear and maintenance. I will include a picture of his 3 wheel ebike vehicle.
Good for you. All information is useful for some. My wife struggled on her ebike journey… still today feels unsteady. Any type bike comes with risks E bike or regular.
Try it. If you like it, go with it. If not perhaps a regular bike is best. I tell people… Rent an ebike and see how it feels for you.

Congrats on your new channel (at least for me on e-bike topic.) I agree with some of your points, but not all. Definitely require hydraulic brakes, but my e-bike is much heavier at 72 lb. with 4" fat tires. If I had to do it over, I wouldn't go fat tires as I agree it makes more sense to have a bike that rolls easier. Next, much prefer the Throttle Lever. A Throttle on the handle is more prone to move unexpectedly moved, DANGER. I rented an e-bike inn Mexico with Throttle on the handle and an unexpected bump over a curb caused me to move the grip, lurching me forward. Agree with you that the number of gears is not very important on an e-bike. Mine has 8, but I usually just use 7 and 8. Agree as well with the point on 'Size of Motor'. Mine has a 750 watt motor, I guess to help with the 72 lb, but just got my wife a 52 lb ebike with a 500 watt motor. The company also makes a 350 watt motor e-bike which would probably do quite well in my 'No Hills Florida' area. Bigger is not always better, but this was my first e-bike, senior or not. I went 'Bike Shop' route vs On Line. Would MUCH rather pay for it to be done correctly the first time, plus establishing a relationship has positives down the road. Don't agree with your Water Bottle thoughts, Don't want it to be convenient to take a quick drink as you have to take your eyes off the road (and hand off the handlebar). Would rather stop and take all the time needed for a refreshing break. (Now if you have Bourbon in your bottle, I fully understand!!!) Go luck. Steve
Very thoughtful. Stopping to drink is optimal. I see people paddling on Bikes that come with that water bottle on the frame now that can be a real problem. Looking down at your knees. You are right.

I was researching e bikes and was turned off by the weight. My Trek is less than 30 pounds and it’s heavy enough for my likes. Lifting a 70 pound bike is more than I’d want. I’m also concerned about chances of the lithium ion battery overheating and catching fire.
Weight is a factor for living into a bike rack into a pickup truck up. I don’t do that much.
Regarding your comment about trek bikes, I looked at the $3299 trek eBay on their website and it had the following to say about weight …
Weight
M - 26.59 kg / 58.63 lbs
When you take the battery out that reduces the weight of even the cheap he bikes like I use. So far, I have never had an overheated battery or fire problem in the three years that I’ve been using the ebikes.
thanks for the info just starting to look for my first ebike ,very hilly i n Portugal an need some assistance when riding

I just bought a Go Trax after watching your video. Very nice bike at a very good price. Have you ever had to have any repairs or maintenance done? The bike shops here want to sell me a much more expensive bike for the service.
No repairs. I did find the buttons on the controller where it says power and mode are delicate, so I put a piece of electrical tape over them to give them a longer life. You could also use reinforced fiberglass cleared tape.
I use a Mobile Bike service for any fine-tuning that needs to be done, but I understand why the bike shop wants to sell you a more expensive bike. Young people love to have the fancy bikes and go super fast. I’m content with going slow and having a bike more oriented to a senior lifestyle.
Enjoy your go tracks.
@@Blhaustin thank you for the reply. This Go Trax bike has more power than I need. Haha. I like to go the same speed I do on my regular bike, I just find I can go farther on the e bike. And I like the option of throttle. Thank you for the suggestion of mobile service. We’re in SC so I’ll look into that.

Some good info, some questionable info. 350-500 watts is enough to be sure. Caliper brakes? Yikes. Hydraulic brakes are best for seniors. No maintenance required, but they do add to cost. The headlight is to BE seen, not to SEE. Always have front and rear lighting, day or night, for safety, especially seniors. A single gear bike eliminates the need to switch gears - use the motor for power when needed. Some may disagree, twist throttle is better for me because it places less wear on the thumb. I prefer wider tires for better stability and shock absorption, although this does sacrifice some rolling resistance (but with a motor attached, who cares?). And I think people would feel safer and get a better warranty if they bought a bike from a company that specializes in ebikes. Aventon or Ride1Up are two companies I can think of that have decent options for about $1200.
Thanks for the feedback. Great suggestions. I agree with you. My in sight….
HYDRAULIC NO MAINTENANCE BRAKES
I have a friend with hydraulic brakes …I found when riding his fat tire bike that yes they work. His brand of bike required that he replace his hydraulic brakes on his 1000 watt fat tire bike so he’s been off his bike for three months. Just my experience.
I really appreciate your feedback and I’ll look into your bike brand suggestions.
I like to switch my bike off the power mode whenever possible and get a workout bike riding in a non-electric mode for exercise purposes, so I do like a bike that has less rolling resistance, and that is pleasurable to ride with the power off for exercise as well as on.
I’ve had my bikes for two years and plan an update soon on upkeep and maintenance both by me, and by a professional Mobile Bike service that I have used. All great points that you make. Thanks again. 😊

Where are the videos on how flats are remedied? I now ride an ELECTRA CRUISER 7D so flats are easy.
Personally i feel 'doing less conttrol' is better for that reason i use a bike with enviolo automatiq where you don't have to shift gears it has a continues range that is always in the correct mode. This only leaves you with one control and thats the assist mode that i personally also almost never change (mostly at 2 out of 4). This way you just peddle and all will be good no mind power going to the whole shifting part or ever being in the wrong gear and putting extra stress on the bike or person. Also feel having peddle only is better and in a middrive (torque based). All this combined means that the bike is almost like a old no gear bike and rides like a bike you don't have any risks of it just 'going' or engaging at unexpected power. The whole idea is that it just makes you legs feel 10years, 20years, 30years or 'i am superman' younger...
I like that comment superman. Rick Steves on PBS, while e bicycling in the Alps said “it makes everyone feel stronger than they really are”. Ha.
Your bike sounds like auto pilot shifting. How interesting. Some people are into that in their new cars with autopilot and motorcycles with automatic transmission now instead of shifting. I did US1 with automatic transmission and it was fun but I felt a little less in control. Just slightly removed from the shifting I was used to. You are right it does take your mind off of the mechanics of riding and shifting and that may be important for some people..
Thanks for your ebike input. …. One last thing…Please subscribe and help me get to 500 subscribers.😊
I liked your comments thanks.

Not a word about a mid-drive torque sensor being better than a cadence sensor hub drive?
Add some words then. I have only experienced what most e-bikes have. Rear wheel motor in the rear hub. Enlighten us.

Inflation has had it effect on many things. The value in some lower price e-bike remains. In my years of riding I have had an inner tube blow on one hyper bike but that was due to pinched installation by a bike professional. It happens sometimes. My wife and I continue to enjoy e-bikes regularly and my biking partner who can barely walk from ankle pain says ebiking is the only pain free exercise he can do. Keep on riding my friends.
Looking to purchase that Gotrax for the wife, but she's only 5 feet tall. Would she be able to reach the ground while seated at its lowest position?
My advice. Size is what you feel comfortable with. When in doubt go with a smaller fat tire bike. See my video here about feet on the ground Her feet will definitely be in the ground. ruclips.net/video/nhjByJbqV6g/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Keep in mind … The go trax is a standard size bike with somewhat fat tires which adds a bit to its height. Want to go by the numbers…More on bike sizing here…

@@Blhaustin The Gotrax is currently on sale for $499. Not looking to spend much more $ on something that we may or may not use much at all. Probably just gonna sit in the garage most of the time.
is charging your lithium ion batter in your home a good idea?? ... they say never leave them un-attended as they are known for the risk of fire !!
I do charging but don’t leave the charger plugged into the bike once it is done. That’s what the my fire dept suggests here. www.nyc.gov/assets/fdny/downloads/pdf/codes/dangers-of-lithium-ion-batteries.pdf

It’s best that you do not charge your battery inside your home and leave it because of fire risk

Best not to charge the battery in the house, especially overnight .
The headlight is very useful during daylight hours. I turn mine on all of the time so that oncoming motorists can see me more easily!
I like strobe lights front and back. Never leave home without them 😊
Get a bike with disc brakes. They will stop you better than anything else out there. Remember that e-bikes are heavier than regular bikes. If you buy a bike on-line there may be quite a bit of assembly with some bikes. If you drink water, just stop and drink it. Don't try to drink while riding, it's safer to stop.
I agree Disk brakes stop an ebike but I disagree about your other points. 1. Disk brakes are prone to annoying Squeak. Even professionals like my Mobile Bike repair expert find it hard to eliminate disk brake squeaks.
Once again In my experience… 2. Calipers don’t squeak and are easier to adjust to get rid of squeaks when they do squeak. Caliper brakes work to stop a heavy ebike in my experience. One of my bikes is a heavy battery powered ebike with caliper brakes. They stop it just fine on the very hilly terrain where I live. Just my personal opinion.
So in summary Disc brakes do stop e-bikes well, but so do caliper brakes…
. You’re inspiring me to do a disc brake squeak repair video.
Did you know… There is special disc, brake squeak cream that you can put on them. My bike professional put it on my disc brakes. It has pluses and minuses.
@@Blhaustin Disc brakes stop bikes better than caliper brakes, that's a proven fact. Who cares if they squeak some. I would rather stop fast than be run over by a truck. There's a reason cars have disc brakes now rather than drum brakes, they work better. The same goes for disc brakes on bikes.
😊wow hitting a truck. Hitting anything is possible. Calipers brakes prevent me from hitting anything or anyone in my many years of riding and were fine for generations before me. I don’t go over 15 miles an hour so screaming down the road and slamming on the brakes is not my style. If you commute and roads driving over 15 mph. Get disk brakes.
here in the UK....stupid laws re e-bikes....no throttle, only pedal assist, max 15.5 mph, 250wh motors or less only
I bike with the 250 W motor every day but I do it not to commute to work and back and only on residential streets away from traffic or on sidewalks. I find the bike makes Hills much more manageable at 250 W I’m happy to go along about 15 miles an hour not over 20. I do understand, your point about no throttle however, I don’t use a throttle 99% of the time and on two new bikes I just bought they don’t have any throttles. Good luck and God save the king.
I want a lot of travel
I want a lot of travel also. Right now I’m traveling with the beach boys in the Gulf of Mexico.

Riding is very unhealthy for the nervous system and pelvic floor.
That’s news to me but thanks for the feedback.
These tips are for people that want to own a low-end ebike, basically, the cheapest piece of crap built. A cheap seniors guide to wasting money.
You have a valid point…These are lower priced bikes.
I have ridden my piece of crap ebike for 2 years, 3 times a week. I rode it today…. Still rolling along For a senior On a fixed income saving money is important.
I have a friend who bought a $2000 flat tire 1000 watt bike and has struggled with the tires that went flat and had to be ordered and back ordered and the brakes that need to be replaced. High dollar doesn’t necessarily mean high-quality.
Older people buy the cheapest bike because thet are not sure that there going to ride it. I got me a piece of crap and if I like it I will get a nicer one and donate my cheap bike to someone that can’t afford one.
You mean In your opinion don't you? I see nothing crap about them, they are just lower priced for people on a fixed income. Spending more doesn't always get you better quality anyway, you just pay extra for a name.
Have you bought a more expensive bike? If so which one do you like. I just released 2 more videos in my series today you might like.

I've been riding this bike for about a month ruclips.net/user/postUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
Me too. Getting my second hyper this week so my wife and I are “evenly yoked”.
Ebikes are much to heavy to ride without the motor so don’t let him lie 🤥 to you especially if you’re a senior 😬🫤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Like trkike price
You are right I suppose weight is very subjective. My wife finds her ebike heavier than I do. Weight has never been top of mind as a consideration for me, but then again, I rode motorcycles for years, so I’m used to things that are heavy …. to me an ebike feels like a piece of paper, in comparison to my Honda Goldwing. A hyper bike is the lightest one I’ve ever ridden and I find that it’s very similar to a standard bicycle and I ride it half the time with power off. You might try a small fat tire bike. The weight is all closer to the ground. I’m planning a video on a foldable one. Thanks for your comment, you make a good point … by the way please subscribe. I’m on my way to 500 subscribers.😊
