This is the only cover of Holocene that I've heard that manages to capture the essence of the song. There are some really great artists out there who've done an excellent job, but this rendering manages to evoke the same emotion as Justin Vernon's original.
It saddens me to see the tribute to Tony, and that this was posted when he was still alive and fighting. I remember discovering him back in high school, when I was new to drumming. I was so shocked to hear that he had, and had succumbed to, cancer. What a horrible and terrifying loss. Nevertheless, this is such a lovely tribute, and I'm glad he got to see it.
This is truly inspiring. You have so much talent. Anybody can put videos of them playing percussion on RUclips, but you are something much different. I cannot stop watching your videos. You are an artist Evan Chapman. Never stop what you do.
There is absolutely no words for this. Much like you I think Justin has to be one of the most talented musicians ever. Period. His music touches everyone who hears it and it never fails to impress me. As much as I love the original, this is just as good and I think you've got so much talent.
I'm sorry for your loss. This, however, is the most beautiful arrangement and interpretation of a pop song I've ever heard. As a percussionist, I am thankful and in awe of your work. Best of luck to you.
Brilliant. I have not found a better cover than this. Its incredibly hard to capture the full power of this song and most covers dont but somehow you managed to. This has been on repeat for days now
This is absolutely brilliant! Please do some more Bon Iver covers on percussion. I was thinking of giving up percussion but after seeing this, I'm not anymore! Well done!
And now after watching it, I can say I completely underestimated it. This is magnificent in every which way. Definitely a new favorite! Pleaasee make more stuff from Bon Iver's new album (:
So glad you did this, Evan. Truly truly amazed by your talent. AND agreed about what you said about Bon Iver! Hope you get your wish. You deserve it :)
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me." You're laying waste to Halloween You fucked it friend, It's on it's head, It struck the street You're in Milwaukee, off your feet ... and at once I knew I was not magnificent Strayed above the highway aisle (Jagged vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles 3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway Was where we learned to celebrate Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me That night you played me 'Lip Parade' Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree Saying nothing, that's enough for me ... and at once I knew I was not magnificent Hulled far from the highway aisle (Jagged, vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles Christmas night, It clutched the light, The hallow bright Above my brother, I and tangled spines We smoked the screen to make It what it was to be Now to know it in my memory: ... and at once I knew I was not magnificent High above the highway aisle (Jagged vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles
Justin Vernon said this song's title was based on the "geological era" but it was also about his "dark night of the soul." Has anyone else ever had a dark night of the soul? How would you explain it to other people?
@ yenraBdellikl, how do percussionists easily market themselves? Im not sure if im asking sarcastically.. im curious if thats true but doubtful.. kinda just seems like a pretentious thing to say just for the sake of sounding bold... not that all of that matters.. in fact it's ironically pretentious for me to write all this out. it just bothered me but yeah, fantastic cover. it is nice to see something so original and of such quality. great subtlety and rhythm niggapants.
@cmistler13 I would think that one would be a little more sensitive. If you payed any attention at all you would have noticed that this guy just lost a friend. He can do whatever he wants, and as primarily a mallet and multi-percussionist, I think that his percussion covers are much more musical and beautiful than his drum covers, which I also like, just for different reasons. Imagine playing Skrillex at someones funeral, that wouldn't be somber at all.
How's it going? We saw you were of this awesome music and thought we'd come introduce ourselves. We go by the name Red Empire. We're a band out of Dublin, Ireland. It's not so easy to get your music heard in our country, so we thought we'd take to the internet to get some feedback on our songs. It would really mean a lot if you'd come check out our original tunes. We think you'll dig it. Let us know what you think! Thanks.
thank you. sincerely, thank you so much for this, man. i'm completely grateful for such a beautiful thing. i really want to hug you right now. thank you for that. thanks.
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me." I am ashamed it's taken me so long to find this since it was uploaded. But this is truly one of the most inspirational video's I have seen from a percussionists perspective in a very long time. Amazing work!
Hey Evan, this has got to be one of my favourite covers ever, and I'm a percussionist myself. I don't say that about many covers but this is just beautiful. I'm going to make my own cover of a song by the Japanese band Toe in the near future but not sure how I should record the sound. Any suggestions? What did you use? It's a full on percussion cover by the way and this cover is so well directed, my video may have some strong influence from this. Thank you for providing this masterpiece
There are no words to adequately describe how much this cover hits you in the chest. Bon Iver is also my favorite band and I have said for years I think Justin Vernon is the most talented musician we will ever see in our lifetimes. You did Justin justice with the brilliance you poured over this creation. One of the most beautifully touching things I have ever seen. Thank you for giving this to us and being so gracious with your immense talent. I'm sure Tony smiles every team he hears someone watch this video.
"Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me" You're laying waste to Halloween You fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street You're in Milwaukee, off your feet And at once, I knew I was not magnificent Strayed above the highway aisle Jagged vacance, thick with ice But I could see for miles, miles, miles 3rd and Lake, it burnt away, the hallway Was where we learned to celebrate Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me That night you played me Lip Parade Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree Saying nothing, that's enough for me And at once, I knew I was not magnificent Hulled far from the highway aisle Jagged vacance, thick with ice But I could see for miles, miles, miles…
Someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me You're laying waste to Halloween You fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street You're in Milwaukee, off your feet And at once I knew I was not magnificent Strayed above the highway aisle (Jagged vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles 3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway Was where we learned to celebrate Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me That night you played me 'Lip Parade' Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree Saying nothing, that's enough for me And at once I knew I was not magnificent Hulled far from the highway aisle (Jagged vacance, thick with ice) I could see for miles, miles, miles Christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright Above my brother, I and tangled spines We smoked the screen to make it what it was to be Now to know it my memory And at once I knew I was not magnificent High above the highway aisle (Shake it, fake it, stick with us) I could see for miles, miles, miles
@cmistler13 Although you did say that you loved his percussion covers, you then contradicted yourself by saying that he needed to only do drum covers. Defending someone's choice in performance isn't being an arrogant dick. However, degrading someones performance by saying that he should stop doing them (which is essentially what you said), is. I'd rather not continue this on a video dedicated to someones life.
This is really nice! I think the only things that would have made it better (to me) are to emphasize that low bass line that comes right after "and at once I knew I was not magnificent"-- you know, the "da da dahhhh, da dahhhh, da dahhhh" one haha-- and to maybe record a couple of loose snares playing that accented 16th riff to get that nice layered sound. That's just me though. :) Coming from a fellow drummer, this is legit!! Thanks so much for recording my second favorite song ever!
Any chance you'd be willing to share the transcription. Great job, and I agree. All of Justin Vernon's musical outlets have been a truly spiritual thing for me.
@ysmnthelight God is probably playing this for Mr. Perolio in the Big Loft right now. At least this is what I think Heaven would sound like. Thank you.
...and I can see for miles, miles, miles
great air quality that day
This is the only cover of Holocene that I've heard that manages to capture the essence of the song. There are some really great artists out there who've done an excellent job, but this rendering manages to evoke the same emotion as Justin Vernon's original.
Im in tears
This is SO creative holy shit
simple and beautiful
Excellent. Musical talent is a tremendous gift that many do not have. If you have it-like Evan does-appreciate it and do not squander it!
Absolutely amazing talent
You are a so good musician, i always follow your videos...hugs from Brasil!
It saddens me to see the tribute to Tony, and that this was posted when he was still alive and fighting. I remember discovering him back in high school, when I was new to drumming. This was a pleasure to listen to. I didn’t know until seeing this video that a vibraphone had a sustain pedal 🤯
Your realy are a genius! I enjoy it so much. Thak you for do this incredible cover.
I really apreciate it.
This is truly inspiring. You have so much talent. Anybody can put videos of them playing percussion on RUclips, but you are something much different. I cannot stop watching your videos. You are an artist Evan Chapman. Never stop what you do.
"someway, baby, its part of me, apart from me" this tribute makes me smile inside and out.
why would anyone dislike this beautiful piece of art?
I just went to church!
Blessings Bro!

Abolutely beautiful.

bravoo bro nice cover
is there any way to get an arrangement for this?
Better than the original.
Do you have sheet music for this? Or was this mostly by ear?
I mean, you can see him looking at it in the video, but I don't see it for sale on his sights.
That is amazing. but just as a joke.....MORE cowbell. no. wow, that was really great.
I think this version of this song should had been used in The Judge instead.

This is actually one of the most beautiful pieces that I've heard in a long, long time. You've done Bonnie Bear proud, my friend.

one of the best videos on RUclips!!!
i discovered this on tumblr and had to download it to my phone because it is one of my favorite instrumental covers.

I actually started to tear up after the first 30 seconds... this is incredibly beautiful. well done
You should get in contact with Twisted Music, and if you have heard of Shpongle, your music reminds me a lot like them, and Soulfood. Big ups man.
If you don't love Bon Iver, then you don't love Kings basketball

Although this will add nothing of value to the video, I can't help but wonder how there is going to be a terrible person to dislike this video.
phenominal! ... PHENOMINAL!! ... P+H+E+N+O+M+I+N+A+L !!!
This is life
Beautiful! Such talent, you have done one of my most precious songs incredible justice, thank you!
Simply amazing guys! That was fantastic! If you get a chance check out our version and leave some feedback! Cheers
@ysmnthelight I'm sure this has been suggested before but you should do Signs by Bloc Party... Also, this is amazing!
Please put all these on an album...also...do more Radiohead ones! How about some Sigur Ros?
please please put your cover of Virginia Tate back up that is my absolute favorite video of all time plz
Can I find the sheet music anywhere? Or should I use this video as my basis
I needed this today. Thank you.
its not that they dont like it, its that they tried to do it and failed in the middle of band class.
Can I use this for a cover? Don't worry I won't take your credits. You're awesome, keep going,
Beautiful rendition. And you were right about JV
