I did enjoy the show, but the whole series felt both rushed and slow, the characters weren't fleshed out enough to care about. Primal had more character development, and most of the main characters didn't talk until season 2.
The ending to UWE was also so disappointing. It actually took me a period to realize it was the finale, because for a moment I thought they were setting up for another episode to tie everything together.
I also hate the trope where people introduce interesting characters, like the Rakshasa, and then do nothing with them. The only thing it really had going for it was the animation and character design.
I also agree the love triangle was stupid. I honestly feel Winston should have died in episode 2, because although he was cute, he was kind of annoying.
I feel like Genndy was just eager to get it over with so he could get started on season 3 of Primal, but that's still no excuse.

Honestly, Melinda and Emma getting separated, then having THAT be the episode where Emma goes in her past, gaining a better understanding of both Melinda as well as the Great Evil would've been a much better in terms of building towards the climax.
Rather than just having them retread through the same lore we already went through literally TWO EPISODES ago then cramming it all into the final ten minutes.

If anything I think the biggest problems with the show are the tone being all over the place and the pacing being weird, also when it comes to the story it feels like Genndy is making it up as he goes along and doesn't actually know who he wants to the actual main villain to be or where the story is supposed to go, the villain being a vaguely defined manifestation of evil feels like a copout

It doesn't make sense, he's been away for at leasr 1,000 years, and his father decided to die young and his bro was also still young. So a 2,000 year unbroken line from father to firstborn son shouldn't be that impressive. But there are also what, 3 dead elven kings in the trees? And the line wasn't even broken, his father was still the king and alive, but the forest still started to die right after Edred left? You even see the king at the end, alive and well, they even call him "my king". It's the same character model as the elf Edred referred to as his dad in the beginning of the episode, but his dad is supposed to be turning into a tree. And then everyone just kinda forgot he was there during Aelwulf's coronation.

I'll be honest from what I've seen on genndy tartakovsky in the season finale of Samurai Jack and his other works. I honestly think he's better with episodic storytelling than the serial sort that I think that this series is supposed to fit in. He's good at telling interesting short stories, however when it comes to a story with an overarching plot, he doesn't seem to understand how to invest his time. Which leads to poor pacing, rushed or forced writing, bland characters, dull drama, underdeveloped world building, poorly executed character development, and too simple a story. His minimalism may work well in an episodic show like samurai Jack or primal, however in story with many plot points as this focusing more on conveying important information is much needed to further invest the audience. I respect his contributions animation in the west, but he clearly has some noticeable flaws in his work that flooded this show.

I think it's like how the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender fucked it up with Korra, when they wanted to make it more complex. Out of all of Gennedy's works (save for Clone Wars because I haven't watched it and I'm not really a star wars fan), I think Unicorn is the worst project he's done. I mean it's not the worst cartoon I've ever seen but the plot was all over the place, the pacing after the WInston joined the Unicorn Warriors started speeding up without slowing down at all and the forced love triangle between Melinda/Emma (or Emmelinda(?)), Edred, and Winston, while it did have some build up, it just kinda felt forced and I think we didn't get to see Emmelinda come to full terms of being a new being/person born of Melinda and Emma's souls. I kinda wish we had more build up for the big "Evil" and more time to get to know the dynamics of the Eternal Warriors with WInston now joining their team. And where the flip did Seng come from? How did he join Melinda, Merlin, and Edred in the fight? Cause he seemed to be a really important friend but instead the whole focus was about the newly reborn Melinda/possessed Emma dealing with Melinda's feelings for Edred and Emma's feelings for Winston while Seng is just pretty much a bald monk (in his past self) Or a little orphaned kid on an acid trip or something. There was also some build up to where we got to know who made Copernicus but we never find out how Otto made Copernicus. I sure hope that if this gets a second season, Gennedy actually takes his time in doing the world building and the lore and pacing the story out.

I guess the reason this show failed, was because it didn't play into Gendy's strengths? Too much talking, and melodrama, and not enough sober, silence, and engaging action?
I can see that, given the last season of Samurai Jack, does a lot of this, and those were the low points of that season, imo. Really a shame too, because this show had a great set up, very charming art style, and great animation; typical Gendy flair.

I like the show, I like the idea, and I do like the voice acting, and the characters at times, heck I’ll even go as far as to say that I like the character designs despite being cartoonish. But I have to agree with everything you said. This show could’ve been a lot better!! Once they killed the fox lady, and they defeated the evil or so, they thought, I knew right away the show was going to be rushed. And it’s sad because while I enjoyed the show and I enjoyed a lot of its moments, I couldn’t help but feel that this was supposed to be a masterpiece, but it ended up being an average Saturday cartoon. Tell me how would you have written the show? You did give some ideas over the characters how they would have internal conflict or struggled with leader ship, but if you could write the show and all its details, what would you do? I’d very much like to see that. You do that, and you’ve earned a new subscriber

    • @SLACKERSroom
      @SLACKERSroom Год назад +2

If I had to write this show the first thing I’d change is the fox “dying” halfway. I think it’s a pretty lame bait and switch. Instead I’d give her a team to fight with, or disciples who believe in the evil to fight along side her so that unicorn actually has consistent people to fight with personalities rather then just random monsters. Next is alfie I’d make him have the same personality he had before. I think it’d be more interesting to watch him want to become a hero rather than just turning nice at the beginning seeing as he was quite rude regardless of his situation. I actually wouldn’t change Emma and eldred that much they work fine they just have a boring middle part. Instead of having Copernicus die and going to that village I think you could’ve had an episode where they just practice using their abilities and it gives them time to actually bond. And you could have other episodes focus on them fighting one the foxes disciples so there’s a constant threat and buildup to the final clash. Also Winston doesn’t become a werewolf and doesn’t show up til the very end after losing Emma originally. I find his presence off putting at the end. After properly building up the fox and her team along with unicorn you can just have them fight all together for the last episode. I’d still have Emma be conflicted with having her powers at the end, but only after seeing Winston again as it floods her back with the memories she once had. Though she comes to terms with who she is now and stays Melinda and helps stop the fox. I’d actually keep the world getting messed up at the end they can “kill” the fox lady, but I’m doing so it spreads across the ear and monsters and new opposition show up sporadically, but the world mostly remains the same now they just travel cleaning up the leftovers of the evil. That’s if you wanted a season 2. That’s just what I’d change off the top of my head🧍🏿‍♂️.

I personally think this show is terrible.
The concept was interesting, but the execution was beyond awful.
Not to mention, it’s stuffed to the gills with logical inconsistencies.
Like, if elves can live for tens of thousands of years, and wizards can live for thousands of years, then why would Edred and Malinda even need to do the whole parasitic reincarnation shtick?
The only character that the whole “reincarnating to fight evil” thing makes sense for is Seng, and he’s a sudo-Buda, so he shouldn’t need a weird robot to do that. In fact, I think one of the big problems with the show is the focus on Emma as a quasi-protagonist, that role SHOULD have been filled by Seng. Have him reincarnate from life to life, and every time he does, Edred and Malinda show up with some sort of device to jog the memories from his past lives.
The time traveling aspect was also completely unnecessary, and feels forced.
And my goodness, the tone is ALL OVER THE PLACE! It’s like the show doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Furry pandering aside, it was such an insult for her to be set up as this mysterious and alluring mastermind plotting in the shadows and foreshadowing this broader conspiracy, all for her to go all postal, doing a full 180 on her personality, abandoning all tact and repose, and (still up in the air if shes gone for good as its never properly explained.) yeeting herself in a head on fight with the protagonists before we even got to fucking know her! Having just finished it the show really feels like 2 if not 3 whole seasons compacted into one. A lot of great ideas but it never really gave anything as much time as it should have. And I do mean anything: characters, lore, worldbuilding, etc. I'm especially annoyed with how underdeveloped (and seemingly discarded out of nowhere) the Fox Lady is. I did like the approach with Melinda and Emma's conflict, and actually loved Winston as a character, but like everything it never had enough time.
I love the animation and other aspects of the show, but I can't help but feel like Gennedy should have tried to work out a deal for at least 2 seasons so the show could be properly fleshed out before getting it off the ground. Perhaps he should have also avoided the serialized format and gone with the episodic yet connected approach of his previous banger of a series. If another season is somehow green lit it might have a chance to fix these issues, but as it is while I enjoyed it I can only give a recommendation with a big, biiiiiig caveat.

Dispite me thinking the show is solid as silver, one of the elements that ticked me off was Winston being a werewolf in moments he isn't supposed to be and somehow still having his human conscience. The show never explains how that became a thing so sometimes I suppose it was Merlin's magic that hitted Winston in the first fight of episode 9 and turned him that way. There's also other elements that dragged the show down to me, like the early defeat of the Fox Lady, the mysterious disappearence of the evil elf king after Edred took that magical crystal from him and used it cure the forest and the sudden death of Otto who was supposed to create Copernicus at some point in the future but there's no way he could accomplish that before the events of episode 8.

The thing with Genndy is that he clearly prioritizes visuals over the writing, focusing more on visual gags, set pieces, and action scenes, and as a result leaves the finer details of the characters and story in the dust. His strengths as a storyteller are not with intimate character moments so much as broad sweeping strokes, which is why "Samurai Jack" and "Primal" work so well, because they are minimal with their plots and dialogue. They are driven primarily by their atmosphere and action, naturally allowing for more visual storytelling that can breath easier and feel more emotional.
"Unicorn" clearly needed a longer running time and/or a more fleshed out and focused script, because so many plotlines and character arcs feel rushed and unsatisfying. It's too vast and complex a story to approach with Genndy's simplistic style, and the characters rarely get to shine because they almost never express their feelings or talk things out, even when nothing is happening. Not that we need countless scenes of them talking, but the dialogue should at least be more snappy and get to the point so that it doesn't feel like time is being wasted, and character moments can feel better earned.

i am finding myself so shocked that people like this show. the character design is all over the place and the art is really inconsistent (something i see with a lot of contemporary animation). emma's husband looks like a friggin dr seuss character and in a bunch of scenes his lines are thicker then everyone else's and it looks... wrong. one character is just betty boop + inque, one character is just black popeye, the elf looks like a clone wars character, and the steam robot is animated like he's from another show entirely. the plot is formulaic and dull, and i havent seen anyone mention the extremely racist indian (or arab?) fortune teller character in the 3rd or 4th ep. with the brown escaped madman from primal, that straight up racist luke cage comic from '16, and now this, im starting to wonder why people let tarkovsky slide on this stuff. is it because using a generally cartoony style gives you plausible deniability for ethnic caricatures? is that why gt loves the so called golden age of animation so much (because artists of that time were very much were hiding minstrelsy behind general cartoonery)? dexters was good, powerpuff is great, samurai jack was great for its time, and clone wars was excellent and jump started an era of great star wars shows, but i kinda think at this point everyone needs to hop off tarkovsky's nutsack. if he was working on this shit for 20 years, things have gone wrong for the man. anyway this is only the second or third critical response to the show ive seen so good for you.

I actually don’t like most of the character design’s for this series because it looks too cartoony for the darker and more mature tone this series is going for plus It looks like a hybrid between the styles of Asterix and Betty Boop however I do like some of the designs like Melinda and Edred which retain some of Genndy’s more original angular style from his previous shows.

This show could of been better if it wasn’t crammed into 10 episodes for the first season. The pacing is just… it is weird. The show had potential, if it has another season, with more episodes, maybe they can make it decent?

Idk cause genndy clearly wrote it in hopes of getting a season 2 since they ended it on a cliffhanger. Which if you’re expecting a season 2 why not just right a really focused season 1 instead of jamming a bunch of stuff in to fix it later🤷🏿‍♂️. It’s weird …

When they introduced the Elves one of my friends was one of the only ones pointing out all the inconsistencies. But I thought “whatever it’s still interesting” “animation is still great” “Emma is annoying as fuck, but I like it thus far” but that finale was complete garbage. Honestly looking back I was more interested in the original group before they all got reincarnated. Ok show at first and after episode 9 I was a bit excited…but after that last episode TOTAL TRASH, TOTAL CONFUSION!! Forget the show don’t bring it back for a season 2 just let us all forget about this like a bad dream

With that out of the way, i pretty much agree, but backwards... i think it is fine for what it is, and it was just getting better, with the more characters it added... i wouldnt expect it to make total scense, with a straight ending... why continue it... you gotta throw questionable things in, take some logic out, and leave it with some cliffhangers, so stuff can get answered later when more seasons get greenlit.

gendy wasnt the only writer fellas. in fact if I remember right he didnt write any of it on some of the problem episodes if the credits were anything to go off of. besides, I saw right away the departure from Jack and Primal. the focus isnt action or story, just a fun cartoon to turn your brain off to with a unique artstyle that blends old school with new, and the animation and color work is still top notch. I think it's unfair to have all these expectations just because Gendy's name is attached when the last thing proper artists want is to be stuck doing the same stuff forever. and if you dont believe me on the focus being the animation itself, just look at the credits sequences. sketches.
