Super! You keep imagining innovative ways to break up real life situations with your painting. Seeing you work through weather and reference materials is highly useful. Thanks.

      Hi Zip,
Glad you enjoyed that one. One of the problems of Scotland is that the weather is so often not the best, so reference material and studio painting has to be done unfortunately. Especially in winter.
I hope you enjoy the finishing off of the painting on Sunday.
      Best wishes, James

I was interested in your analysis of composition. To be able to “see” a picture is not always as easy as it seems. I agree Seago was a master. Thank you for showing us Blackness, it’s not my part of the country so it’s nice to travel with others. Wesson was also a master you remind me of his paintings.

      Hi Robert,
My first concern is always the composition, finding something to me is one of the biggest challenges.
Seago was an amazing painter, whether it be in oil or Watercolour. I remember seeing a watercolour of his in London. It was a picture of Venice and it’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. It seem to glow off the wall. I’ll never forget it.
      Wesson was also amazing.
I hope you enjoy Sunday’s video and finishing off the painting.
      Best wishes, James

Hi James, really great video. The magic of watercolour shone through as you turbo charged your strokes and variation of broad washes to finer touches. I liked the idea of a sketch first then back at base translated to a larger sketch. Then using a photograph to build up the painting. This was a revelation and just clicked with me.
Bold, block, brave and pretty! Is what I will take away from watching you.
Thanks, on to part two next.
    Cheers

      Hi Steve,
Watercolour is amazing. There are so many directions you can take and it’s all down to personal choice.
Sketching is a good idea, but sometimes it does make it a little bit harder in the end because you have to rely on photographs which don’t tell the truth.
I hope you’ve managed to find your Palette.
      Thanks, James

Hi James, thanks for your reply. I have a few favorite photographs I want to copy in watercolours, eg one Lindisfarne Castle in the background with the beach and wind surfer on the sea.
    I have finally bought a
Liz Deakin 15 pans palette. Happy with it just need to use it!
I am a bit slow, just want to make the choices and set the direction I want to go.
    Cheers

Thank you for this video. Enjoy roaming around and seeing your country! I am very interested in this because this is somehow what I do when I am out and about. I most likely will do a small sketch and take some pictures and then come back and try to make my painting. You did mention that that’s the way you approach oil painting. I would love to see you do the same scene in oil. That should be very interesting. I tend to paint the same things over and over again. When I’m on vacation it’s usually by the water so I will paint the beach, etc. when I’m home, I usually walk around the neighborhood and see some thing that catches my eye even if it’s just the bark on a tree. That’s enough about me. Thanks James always a pleasure watching you( and Tanya! )

    • @JamesPotterAboutArt
      @JamesPotterAboutArt  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Joanne,
Good to hear about your approach to painting and what you like painting. In Scotland, the weather is often very bad so sketching and then doing a painting in the studio is a necessity.
It’s an interesting challenge painting this way, but in a way more complicated. It requires many processes. But we’re both subject to the weather so sketches are often a good thing.
I will be doing more oil paintings, perhaps not for a wee while, but I will video it when I do.
Hope the weather is not too hot for you,
      Best wishes, James

    Hello James
I must say that your painting of Blackness Castle is truly wonderful. Without any initial pen line drawing, it has its own energy and better for it in some respects, it has more soul.

      Hi Gerald,
      Glad you’re enjoying the painting.
Painting buildings is a real challenge in pure Watercolour. As you said, the normal way is with pen and ink which seems to solve many of the problems.
Hopefully I’ll be doing more buildings which are real challenge to me, especially without pen and ink.
I hope you enjoy the finishing off of the painting on Sunday.
      Best wishes, James

@@JamesPotterAboutArt Strangely enough, I am just about to start a watercolour, from a photograph I took in 2010 in Venice, which shows rows of highly coloured house fronts in Burano. The many embellishment details on these houses will probably force me to have to use a fine liner pen!
      Best regards

Thanks for the tour James and an interesting start of the painting process. I notice on this occasion your sketchpad appears to be 7x5, I am amazed when you use the smaller pad for planning your paintings.
I must confess as a beginner I can neither paint or draw so usually use tracedown paper but heard you reference ‘gridding’ do you recommend that approach.
I have so looked forward to your video coming our way and look forward to the next one. Thank you.

    • @JamesPotterAboutArt
      @JamesPotterAboutArt  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Jim,
      Glad you enjoyed this one.
I will be doing more sketches and studio paintings. One of the problems of Scotland is that the weather is sometimes a bit unpredictable.!!
Doing a sketch and then a painting in the studio is often a good substitution for painting outdoors. As you noticed I do that sort of sketch on a 7 x 5 piece of paper, just gives me a little bit more space, however, my small sketchpad is perfect for when I’m painting outdoors.
I don’t use any gridding system for transferring the drawing I tend to just attack it and get it done!
I hope you enjoy Sunday’s video.
      Best wishes, James
