that's great! one comment though, i'd say that using leftover wrapping paper or reusing some you got around a gift is good, but i don't recommend buying wrapping paper for anything because the inks and coatings used on most of them makes them non recyclable!
Bárbara L Tramunt you could always ask around family and friends for those random rolls of paper that have been in the house since 2010 but you never want to throw it away because it *could* eventually be used! A good way to not buy new wrapping paper, and help people eliminate their dust collecting scraps
one thing that i love about your tutorials is how achievable they feel? the garments you end up with are beautiful but the process still seems like i could do it with my lower end sewing machine and basic skills
One thing to be careful of: if your sleeve does have a different front and back, MAKE SURE YOU REVERSE YOUR PATTERN when cutting out the second one, so it doesn’t make two of the same! (Can’t wait for the bishop sleeves! :D )
3:50 You can also use a pin or a needle and perforate the paper by pushing the pin through the seam. If you can't see the teeny-tiny holes in the paper just shine a flashlight from the other side of the paper. Connect the holes with a pencil. (I hope this makes sense, English isn't my first language)
I do this too! I think I learned it on one of Annika's videos. 🤔 Sometimes I put a thin towel under the paper so the pin pokes through easier and makes bigger holes.
Annika, Tip: to attach the turtleneck, turn the body of the shirt wrong side out and pin the turtleneck from the inside. It's soooo much easier to attach! Happy sewing!
I use the same thing when doing a closed sleeve (when you sew the sides body together first and attach the sleeves after) because it makes the suckers like 5 times easier. Still hard, but less hard (can you tell I hate doing sleeves?)
I love that you are transparent about when you messed up and about changing your donation amount (I also love that you’re donating!) I feel like most RUclipsrs would have left those bits out and I appreciate it thank you
here in the uk we like to use a mixture of imperial and metric which makes absolutely no sense at all. I've always used inches when sewing, body measurements just make more sense to me in inches. but you have to buy the fabric by the metre 😄
So I've never seen sleeves put in before the side seams have been sewn up and I honestly am blown away - it looks so much easier than trying to ease a sleeve into a completed armscye! Genius!
Something I do for tracing sleeve holes, when I'm patterning off existing clothes, is to poke through the seam with a pin so it leaves some little perforations in the paper then connect the dots. I found that I kept shifting the fabric around slightly when I would lift the sleeves up and down so this works a bit better for me.
Ooooo. I like how you use a regular machine and not a serger for the knit. This is giving me confidence to try one on my own. Also, could you do a cowl neck tutorial with knit? This top would be super cute with the cowl neck and bishop/next tutorial Sleeves. Thanks for your great content.
You've inspired me to take another crack at making a shirt! Being a plus-sized gal who's also trying to be more conscious about where my clothes come from can be insanely hard, but this looks pretty doable for my normal energy levels!
I love how accessible you make sewing ❤ My passion for sewing came back during the lockdown and I've no access to a printer to print patterns, and it's so refreshing to see good tutorials for sewing stylish clothes without patterns linked in the description!
The KT tape is such a mood! As a fellow falling apart person that stuff works great for hard to brace places like my wonky shoulder. Especially when I’m doing shows (though I do get weird looks for looking like a 5yr-old’s craft project)
YAAAS, I was waiting for this! I got some excellent micro pleated velveteen in black from my neighbor and I immediately wanted to make a sumptuous black turtleneck. But I didn't want to go out to buy a pattern thanks to COVID. I'll be making the bishop sleeve variant but this is a good start.
The fact that you released this today of all days makes me really happy. Having a really bad migraine postdrome rn so I can't do any of the things I was planning to do today but this is such a nice thing to pass the time
Hi Annika, Thank you so much for providing closed captions for your videos!! Whether you write them yourself, pay someone to write them, or have a fan do it, Closed captions are vital for folks such as me (I have Auditory Processing Disorder) or anyone else who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or who also has APD. It's just a small thing but captions really improve my life and I wish it would become a standard across all youtubers. Thank you Annika for standing up for all disabled people
Dear Annika, I have been watching you for about 5 years now, and you were the first person to inspire me to start sewing! I just got my first sewing machine and have been really struggling with sewing on sleeves, but this tutorial made everything super clear! Thank you for the inspiration and clear instructions! Greetings from Lithuania!
What a beautiful fabric!!! I cannot STAND turtlenecks...not from a fashion standpoint...they always look nice (on other people). I just hate things on my neck....but I want to love them. They look so classy.
Instead of taking the sleeve in like she did, add a few inches to the cuff so it’s wider, then gather the bottom of the sleeve and sew on a cuff, I usually add a button cuff. Also you will need to add more room to the top of the sleeve and gather that as well and sew onto the bodice. There’s a bunch of tutorials on RUclips if that made no sense haha :)
@@evec6751 Thanks for the info! My comment was mostly in support of Annika's next video. I'm sure I could figure it out if I was really motivated, but I enjoy her tutorials a lot as well, because I find them relaxing and fun to watch.
i've been wanting a sleeveless turtleneck for a bit now. and since i finally have access to a sewing machine this video couldn't have been more timely! i will definitely give this a go!!
"WhY aRe YoU uSiNg InChEs?" Well, it's not the same reason as Annika, but for some reason, I can't seem to find metric rulers or mats at Spotty when I go looking. So until my current ones fall apart, inches it is.
I use flipchart paper, you know that paper that is used in classrooms/in business meetings? That. It comes in like 20 sheets and is cheap and is also more sturdy than butchers paper so it's less likely to tear. My father in law also gave me a massive roll of brown paper (like literally it's hundreds of meters) so Ive been using that too. I'm sorted for paper lol. Nice thing about using a roll is that for really long garments like pants/dresses you don't have to tape paper together even then.
Just for anyone who might want to make this, the shirt Annika makes is actually a "mock neck," so if you want to make a folded over turtleneck you'll need to double the length of the neck piece and probably add an inch to get that nice fold.
Oh that turned out so adorable! Thank you for sharing this. I love how detailed you are with your tutorials. Great tips. All the best! I just saw Martina's video where they have moved back to Canada. So glad to see you and Luciano are good and Martina and Simon are doing well. Lots of love and health to you all. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family
i was just thinking of making a long sleeve top, but the sleeves freak me the hell out. yours turned out amazing, i love the fabric so much! you look beautiful in it!
The wrong side of wrapping paper works pretty well to and when thrifting was possible it's often in abundance at thrift stores. Or sometimes your grandma's house, after my grandma passed away we found out she was a wrapping paper hoarder, so ask your Grandma if your lucky enough to still have her you never know she may have a stash.
Hi! ❤️ I just want to say thank you for putting sewing videos out there! I started sewing because I watched your videos, and I discovered my love of sewing because of it! Now I'm doing costumes for shows, and making personal pieces at home and I've never been happier :) so thank you! 💖💖

YES! I love your videos. They inspired me to start sewing and just going for it. Currently making a gathered tiered dress, everyone on RUclips said it was easy to gather... I say no, but hoping it gets better 😂❤️🥰
I dont know why but I felt so validated when Annika said we could use newspaper to draw patterns! I m always using newspaper cause I dont have anything else but was kinda ashamed of it for some reason
Wow this is such a good tutorial!! I never mind waiting for your videos because its such a treat every time. I'm really excited to try this one if I can find nice material because I've really gotten into wearing these kind of tops under pinafore dresses lately and they have been making me feel really confident. And as a autistic nonbinary person I'm really glad to see you donating to a fantastic cause.
Haha, the imperial vs metric struggle is real! I grew up in continental Europe where metric is king, moved to Ireland 13 years ago where people use either/or, but my generation & younger prefer metric, but at the same time because of all the American sewtubers I switched to imperial, so in my sewing classes when the teacher says "1 cm" I have to convert it to 3/8" in my head :D One little remark about the sleeve width, brought to you by Morgan Donner: you may want to measure the circumference of your fist too, because it's usually wider than your wrist, and if the fabric doesn't stretch too much and you can't push your hand through then you won't be able to put the top on :) Lovely tutorial, thanks for that
Honestly I really appreciate that you showed you seam ripping the messy neck cuff because the first time I tried doing that I literally screwed up so many times that I ripped the cuff after seam ripping it so many times
Gosh had I known you could buy butchers paper I wouldn’t have spent the entire day yesterday tracing a pyjama pattern onto bits of tissue paper I had to stick together. KMart $5.00 AND I have also started using inches even though I am in Australia too for the same reasons you say. Inches are bigger in size so easier on the eyes when taking so many measurements. Love the music when you’re modelling the finished top.
The only problem with that is you have to make sure to match the arm seams up perfectly (I've accidentally made one side a bit longer than the other doing this before!), so now I find it easier hemming like this. But anyway you want to do it works! :)
Yay! so nice to see another Annika sewing video! I love seeing how you create basic clothes with copyable techniques. It makes me feel really comfortable in trying to make clothes myself.
Instead of lifting and placing, or using a tracing wheel, you can use a straight pin and poke holes through the fabric since it’ll go through to the paper and connect holes that way.
Adding the sleeves is easier once the side seams are sewn so you are attaching a tube into the armhole. That is how I was trained to do it. Also most sewing machines now have a stretch stitch and overlook stitches to finish the edges. Great polo neck as we call it in UK.
I started following you at the begging of your channel when u used to use glue gun to make clothes and time to time I remember to check your channel, idk but it makes me happy
Annika!! For the awkward pattern tracing bit where you offer the alternative of a tracing wheel, I have a cheaper method - use a sharp pin to make your dot-to-dot line underneath! So just poke the pin along the seam you're tracing, both through the garment and through the paper underneath. Then you'll have a few dots to join when you take the garment away!
Thank you for showing how you sew your sleeves onto the bodice! Last and only time I put sleeves onto a top I had already sewed the side seams 😂 I wanted to cry trying to pin everything in a circle
