Ah, life in our small train worlds. I feel your frustration with the glitches you experienced! However, you appear to be an excellent problem solver and do not hesitate to take on challenges. It is nice to see the behind-the-scenes reality of garden railroading. No sense sugar coating this. All of that aside, it was nice to see the beautiful motion in your garden layout. Your gentle hand-formed curves really add to the realism and are a sight to behold! Thank you! 👍
What a great comment, thank you! This was the reality of getting a not quite finished garden railroad operational with all the good and the ugly. I am indeed keen to solve the problems that occured during the video. When building such a railroad you have to tackle many problems that come your way. But once you worked through them it feels even better! The flex track curves are my favorit as well. I will never go back to pre manufactured curves for a permanent layout since I have seen the difference myself!
I think a leafe blower train would create more problems than solving them but it would be a fun project for sure. I may consider it once I have more time available.
Awesum video. Thanks for sharing the good, bad and the ugly bits - it makes me feel much better about when stuff doesn’t work as planned on my railway.
I am glad I could make you feel better. Problems occur especially when you try to run trains on a layout which is still under construction, like in this case. But for one it was very important to experience the problems so I can solve them along the way and two, I had a lot of fun anyways.
Thanks to your video, the 5 hours of track preparation only took 5 minutes for us!! 🙂🙂 But the result is great and your trains are magnificent!!! Thank you for these magnificent images full of realism. The result is amazing!!
Thank you very much! It was important to me that you can at least see what it takes to get some trains running. This process will be much shorter once I get the layout finished but the steps will still be the same. I am glad you enjoyed the trains, keep watching there will be more!
Excellent. You must get the track inspectors to give your mother a good 'Clucking to' for high tailing it with vital railroad battery's. 😄 Maybe you could modify a flat bed wagon to hold the leaf blower and run it in front of the cleaning wagon. You may need teo loco's to counter the effect of the blower. The two locomotives look really nice.
We have 3 batteries for our batterie powered garden equipment. I made clear that one should stay at home at any time in the futrue. Running a blower on a train is way to inefficient and would cause more problems than solutions. I much rather get the cleaning done fast and run some nice trains afterwards...
Loved seeing the trains running on the layout. I hope the switch issue is easy to fix. Night time running session was stunning. A lot of work to date and I really hope you enjoyed using your layout and running some trains. Cheers Tim
Hi Tim, thank you very much! I too hope that I can solve the switch problem quickly but I have a feeling that I need to remove every single switch from the layout to fix it in my shop ... that would be a lot of work, but we´ll see. I for sure enjoyed to run my trains. I should do it more often and I will do so in the upcomming garden railraod season!
It is a very nice and powerfull model. I fitted some custom weights inside the loco, it can pull a lot. The sound is a little weak but I can resolve that by fitting a bigger speaker.
You're just great. I've been watching you for several years now. how you did everything thoughtfully and wisely. I wish you further success in the continuation of your railway.
I have good news for you, they are available for purchase! But if you lack the suitable rail network to run the loco I would suggest to enjoy this beautiful machine through youtube. It is your choice :)
Sorry to hear about the issues with switches, Robert. I hope you find the root cause. However, the evening running shots looked amazing. Great work with the station lighting.
Thank you! This day went not as planned but I am happy to have discovered the issues so I can fix them as soon as possible. At least the lights worked flawless and I had no issues with the track power supply.
Sorry about the technical issues, but seeing trains running was great, and the station areas with all the lights looks fantastic. What a beautiful job and layout. The trains looks wonderful, running along in the dark with all the bright lights and sound. Well done! You may want to have a chat with the track inspectors and see if they have any ideas on what went wrong?? ;-)
I am glad you enjoyed this episode. I guess I answered your question involuntary during the video. I need to get the switches working properly. This has the highest priority since I want to run my trains during the holidays!
It's nice to finally see and hear the rewards of outdoor layout track maintenance. I feel your pain in the switch malfunctions. Very frustrating. I was wondering if the leaf blower would blow the roadbed ballast away with the leaves. Probably was best to pick the leaves as you did. 5 hours is way too long to prepare track to run trains. Hope you can close the prep time down to an hour or so. For that reason, I converted my locomotive to RC/battery power several years ago. I was tired of cleaning the track for good continuity. Now just do a track inspection, maybe run my rail broom car around the layout, and fire up the locos. Running trains in a few minutes. I get 3 to 4 hours of run time on the batteries. You should look into this. It would also make a good video on your conversion projects. The layout looks AWESOME! Now you want to enjoy the operations. All the best! Ron//
Yes it was a blessing to run some trains that day! The leaf blower works fine to remove the leafes without blowing the ballast away, I´ve cleaned the tracks many times before that way. 5 hours is way to much, no question about that but I had the odds against me at this occasion. Picking up leafes would take me 15 minutes with the help of the leafe blower. I hope in the future my switches work properly so more that 2 hours of trying to make the switches work will be a part of the history. Also scraping stones out of the switches won´t be a part of the regular cleaning porgess either, that day I had to do it because of the extensive track work that was done before. I expect to have the layout up and running in 45 min once everything works. Battery powered locos are no option for me. I run the same system as all of my friends do so we can interchange rolling stock.
Quite a lot of work, but your layout does look great! I wonder though, I assume that you considered both track powered trains and battery powered, what where the main reasons to go for track powered over battery? and in situations like this, do you regret not going the battery powered route or isn't it really an issue?
A lot of good questions, here we go... Battery powered locos are not a option for me since a want to run the same system as my friends do so we can interchange rolling stock when we meet up. It is also the most common way to run a garden railroad in my neck of the woods so I never really considered the battery option. I don´t regret this approach at all. Battery powered rolling stock wouldn´t have solved any of the problems I had during the course of this video. I would still need to remove the leafes and the switches would need to work regardless of battery or track powered locos. The actual track cleaning could be resolved with battery powered locomotives but that is the least time consuming part of the cleaning progress of my layout and serves as sort of a test run as well. Overall, once I get the layout finished, I will need less than one hour to make the layout operational and that is fine for me.
Thank you, I appreciate it! My plan was to have a nice day of operation shortly before christmas but since my switches won´t work I am not sure if I can do it. First I will need to fix the problem for sure!
That is the easiest fix to such a problem but in case of my big station area this is not the way I want it to work. I had no electrical issue either, the problem lies by the switch itselfe. I will tackle this problem soon and there will be a video how I fix it if I can fix it. We will see...
No not those locomotives. In germany we do have some locomotive types that pull a big tender behind them and some locomotives that have the tender build within the locomotive frame.
I have watched your videos from the very beginning. It’s a fabulous layout, but I’m curious as to why you didn’t go with radio control/battery power with the large size? Thank you, it’s been a great series. My name is Tom Rey and I live in San Diego,California. My layout is RC/battery.
Hi Tom, thank´s for your comment! I appreciate you watching since the beginning, I hope you stay along for the ride in the future as well. I run my layout the same way as my friends do so we can interchange rolling stock during train meetings. There are pro´s and con´s to each approach but I am happy with the track powered system. Most of the problems I had in this video wouldn´t have been solved with a battery powered loco. The switches need to work for any of the two ways. So I will go ahead and fix the issues I have very soon! Greetings from Germany!

Will you be building a turntable so you can reverse the Engines when needed?
No probably not. Turn tables are very fragile at this scale and don´t work most of the time when installed outside. Although they are very cool...
solution to switchs not working, circuit boards and water don't mix. I suggest manual switchs for outdoor rail. Just a thought.
Conformal coating can help a lot. Can buy it in a spray can too.
