I know the comment is old but I answer anyway. You're right. A brilliant piece of art. Came across this thanks to one of my professors in university. Incredible guy. Inspirational.
Oh wow. I’ve loved this poem for years but some of the references alluded me! I was just reading about Rhodesia and finally made the connection that Ian Smith was the colonial leader in the 70s before independence and Salisbury was the capital. (of course the British would name the capital something dumb like that ) Zimbabwes’ independence movement must have been an important issue in left circles at the time. AFRICAN LIBERATION!
Its hard to conceive that I went to college with this mans son who is also an outstanding poet as well. But had I been exposed to Barakas work then I'd have had a greater appreciation for that relationship because I feel like I've done myself a dis service not to meet him myself in person. Today I find myself a genuine fan with a great deal of respect for his work. I greatly admire this mans linguistic talents.
We need him today. We need voices like his standing up for our interests. But we don't. Today, black man gets a little money and he starts sounding like Kanye. We are fucked.
The Devil was just too busy to get back to you until now, my brothermentormuseandfriend.... I won't say "Rest In" anything since I'm sure that if there is an afterlife, you'll be raising hell against injustice there as well..... How 'bout: "Let's hope that we don't stop hearing your screams until The Last Breath! Go get those spirits in The Otherworld: don't let them rest until they bring peace back to Earth!"

@sumrexdiscus2011 And what is "high art?" Who gets to decide what is and what is not "high art?" Of course, it can't be that Baraka's poems don't fit with your aesthetic.

Yeah you should hear some of his stuff. Its pretty bad. But he did alot to help Blacks achieve the status they have today. He is a great man and is really undermined. I just wrote a research paper on him and it really surprised me how tough his life is.
Copy and pasting a lie on multiple videos. You read a wiki page, you yourself didn't sit in a cafe with Baraka. And to say his mindset is "still the same" is ignorance. You don't know this man, don't pretend you do. And also he renounced his anti-semitic tones in his poetry, stating he was enduring a period in his life that made him angry and reckless.
Objective reason? That's some funny stuff. Hey, guys, come see inzpectr! He comments on RUclips, and he wants OBJECTIVE REASON! He lives in America, and he believes in OBJECTIVE REASON! Ah ha ha ha ha . . . Suck on a drone, dude.
That wouldn't make you any better than the very people that were racist in the first place. You're logic makes racism okay for one group versus another; what a travesty.
I was in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and sat in a cafe with Amiri Baraka when he was known as LeRoi Jones. He had his three-ring notebook on the table that had a full cover drawing of an erect phallus. Ask him for his early notebooks and you will find that and perhaps more of the same. His hedonistic mindset is still the same as well as his anti-Semitic poetry and pronouncements. He deserves to be stripped of any honorary awards he has ever received.
baraka's poetry is a thousand times better performed than read silently

What a legend !! It's unfortunate that the majority of the people haven't had to listen to him, particularly blacks
I heard this live, it was beautiful.

Sheesh. Deep
I'm wondering if the "Christian" theme is due to the discourse at the time or because Jimmy Carter was such an open Baptist Christain.

Holy shit
The problem is,we don't know that the devil is a man. What man?The man of sin.Who is that?
Sorry he isn't here to write about what's happening now.
agreed.
If he was, I'm sure the poem wouldn't be much different from how it is.
it can't be donald, it can't be race, must be me, go back to sleep

uh uh uh says who?

He was in his youth. But he pondered and adjusted his views over time, like an honest thinker.
why does he use the phrase"must be the devil"
and why does he reapeat devil
Yeah you should hear some of his stuff. Its pretty bad. But he did alot to help Blacks achieve the status they have today. He is a great man and is really undermined. I just wrote a research paper on him and it really surprised me how tough his life is.
PEACE BE UPON YOU!!
Why would you say that?He said nothing about race.
