I can't believe how many everyday players have batting averages hovering near or below the Mendoza line over the past several years. Used to be guys like that weren't in the majors very long if they continued to hit that poorly. It really is sad how almost every hitter just swings for the fences but many can't hit over .240 to save their life and near every pitcher tries to throw in the upper 90's on every pitch but if starters pitch anywhere near 200 innings in a season or relievers pitch more than an inning per outing their arms fall off. All anyone cares about is homeruns and strikeouts. The game has lost a level of excitement that was there not even 10 years ago. At least the game is always changing so in another decade or so things will be different, maybe better, maybe worse, but different nonetheless.
I was at Tropicana field last year when it was announced the Yankees had acquired Joey Gallo. Several fans in the stands had already started talking about it having read the news on their phones, and there was much chatter. The roar from the (mostly) Yankee fans in the stands when they put it up on the screen confused me. I had just moved to Tampa from Texas, where all the Ranger fans I knew believed it was "Joey Hit Ball" or "Joey Strike Out". I couldn't understand why everyone was happy to get this guy.
I could see why the Yanks would take a gamble on him, a left handed, dead pull power hitter aiming for that short porch in right field. Plus a pretty good outfielder.
One of my favorite things to do while watching Yankee games is to go straight to twitter when Gallo strikes out 😂…Yankee fans are RUTHLESS and hilarious lol. Hope Joey gets it together !
It’s all mental, dude came out and talked about his problems with anxiety while he was a Ranger and has completely fallen off a cliff since the rumors of him to the Yankees started
You win some and you lose some. I like Joey Gallo. By all indications he really busts his butt. Unfortunately I think it’s more mental than physical. I hope a change of scenery will get him back on track. He has too much talent.
Analytics have their purpose except when they are used to try and make bad players look good. I actually had one guy trying to convince me Gallo was on the cusp of being elite by using analytics
It's really sad this is happening to Gallo but he has to go, Benintendi is brought in to hopefully produce. I Hope Gallo has an upside in his career soon but unfortunately it's not with The Yankees.
@@paulpinball9952 i mean doubleplays are of course worse. But, not a good defense of not making contact. A lot more can go right making contact, and anybody who uses the DP argument has gone too far down the analytic hole.
Always liked him when he was in Texas. Always watched his at bats while casually flipping through games. His situation clearly proves how ones mentality affects his game. GL bud👍
Two guys he reminds me of are former ranger and current bust Chris Davis, and Adam Dunn. The former went off the rails after injuries and amphetamine suspensions. The latter, while a good lefty power bat when he was on, had some pretty bad sub-mendoza line seasons. Whether or not Joey Gallo winds up like either is to be seen. All I know's that it puts the Yankees in a tricky situation towards the deadline and his free agency.
Gallo is not a failed experiment because of anything he has done. He came over to his favorite childhood team and tried to hard at first. He was doomed to fail when Boone with his awful lineup construction put him in the #9 spot. Of course pitchers are going to pitch around a serious power threat when he hits between IKF and DJL. Put Rizzo in that situation and you will see the same thing. Put Gallo between Judge and Stanton and you will see his bat light up opposing pitchers again.
Part of Gallo's problem as a Yankee is that he sucks at the plate, but is dangerous. So when he played with other shitter teams were more careful with him, but in newyork the mindset is to go after him, exposing that he isn't really that good.
4:20 OMG you're so right! I'm actually very worried about the ability of Red Sox fans being able to cope with seeing Benintendi in pinstripes... I can't remember any other time where they've lost a beloved player to their long time New York rivals.
This wouldn't ever happen, but imagine the baseball gods got so pissed about Benintend beingi in pinstripes that they cursed Boston with a century's long World Series drought?! That'd be crazy and unheard of! 🙃
Sonny Gray comes to mind as "not able to play in the Bronx" and he's doing phenomenal away from New York. Gallo's another one. His glove is good, his plate discipline is decent, but he's a literal Babe Ruth: either hits a home run or strikes out. Hopefully whatever team Gallo ends up going to will be the worthwhile change in scenery. Not everyone looks good in the Pinstripes, and sadly Gallo is among them. He's actually better against the Yankees than as one. I wish him the best of luck in his career.
it’s a lot like with Sony Gray, talented player, good guy, but the high pressure and constant scrutiny of playing in New York especially for a franchise with a history and culture like the Yankees can be very difficult and overwhelming, he’ll go to a small market team and bounce back
This is untrue. He normally bats at least .200 and his power is way down. Defense is the only thing that you can argue has been consistent and even that eh
@@darryberrymemes5739 speaking on average alone which I know isn’t the best way measure. he’s only hit above .210 twice and above .250 once. He usually floats right above or below .200. Defense is the only thing he’s been consistent at, but finding a guy who has defense and can at least move the bases isn’t a hard thing to find. But adding another guy who strikes out a ton and typically only hits for power didn’t make much sense. They already had power hitters.
@@BadMoonRising92 I can see what the Yankees where trying to do with him and he would have been fine if he hit 40+ hrs. But that’s what they got him for. He’s on pace for like 22 by the end of the year. He’s not been the guy we expected. But hey it really doesn’t matter we have bennitendi which is a huge upgrade. And the team instantly got much better. One less bad bat and one more great one
Yeah I know right. This is a full time MLB player who has managed only 100 hits in a season once…100 !!!!!! How is it possible anyone thought he was a good hitter
@@BadMoonRising92 Even though your comment shows just how bad Gallo has been his entire career I have to correct you….he is even worse than you said Gallo has managed to hit above .209 for a season only once…..that’s it only once, not the 2 times you said.
As a San Diego fan, we already have a former Yankee slugger (and strikeout machine) in Luke Voit… all due respect to Gallo, but I hope he lands elsewhere…
He would be an excellent pickup for the Padres. Melvin knows how to construct a lineup unlike Boone. I doubt he would put a dangerous home run threat like Gallo in between players who his for average. Surround him with power threats and you will see his bat return. Plus I am sure he can be picked up for little more than his remaining contract so penny pinching Hal can save a few bucks.
As a Rangers fan I saw gallo back when he was in AA ball all the way to the Rangers. I truly believe the Dodgers will be where everything changes. The Rangers did Gallo extremely wrong, he was home grown he loved it here, wanted to stay a Ranger, and the fans loved him. Yankees trade happens and throws him through a mental loop and screws up everything at that moment and becomes the most hated man in NY, even saying in interviews that he doesn't even leave his home to go anywhere. As far as the Rangers go I really don't believe a possible reunion with them will go well as much as myself and other gallo fans hope, he will do better without the Rangers.
I’m not suprised it didn’t work. The Yanks didn’t need a low average, high strikeout power guy on their lineup when they had enough power hitters in that offense. I get that they didn’t give up a lot for him and needed the left handed bat, but Gallo was a bad fit. Yankees needed hitters, not analytical experiments
Josh Smith, Glenn Otto, Ezequiel Duran, and Trevor Hauver. Three of the four have played in the majors this year and have done well. I think NYY gave up too much.
Carpenter was in Gallo's spot a short time ago, the difference is he took advice and did everything he could to be relevant again. Gallo stubbornly refused to change his approach, it's painful to watch him hit into the shift over and over and over again.
You should look up "Joey Gallo bunting" on the 'net. He's been working on beating the ridiculously exaggerated defensive shifts since late in his Rangers stint, but one video's headline indicates he's "begrudgingly bunting." That would be a shame because, as you can see, he's very good at it; after all, it's the easiest way to make bat-on-ball contact. One wonders if Yankees management was actually more begrudging than Gallo. If so, this partnership never had a chance. If not, Gallo's career could be at a crossroads when/if MLB bans infield shifts in 2023.
It wasn’t an experiment . Joey gallo was a tested player with great ops every year. High obp and hits tanks. He has not done any of that . It was more of an experience than experiment
Joey gallo has said repeatedly that he REFUSES to change his swing. What kind of ball player doesent adapt to the situation/slump. He would rather waste an entire year striking out instead of trying to fix his swing and help his team win.
@@yell0wberry oh i know he has misplayed on that side, and i really hate defending him, but i cant deny he tends to deep pitching staffs, especially on the relief side. I now feel dirty for defending him.

Capital idea! You need to get on the phone to Mook Manfred, QUICK! It could be the only MLB rule change under his command that everybody would endorse.
I know what Gallo's problem is he is pulling his head out and misses sight of the ball for a split second , my son was the same way in little league, until I got him to watch the ball all the way into the catchers glove at practice without swinging the bat, he improved greatly so much so when he was 12 years old he had a travel game at Sussex Stadium where a triple a team plays , 365' to left 410' to center and 365 to right well he hit the base of the wall to center left on a fly, after the game the coach for the opposing team caught up to us and told my son if he continues to play ball he'd play in the majors, he went to an Ivy league school and the school didn't have a ball team.
Benintendi should do fine, he didn't mention that Kansas City is not exactly a park to hit home runs in so I would think that he could be around the 15 Homer, 30 plus doubles maybe even 40 plus
Can never understand why they keep playing him. Lots of AAA guys who can hit 250 and field fine. The occasional homer isn’t worth the 9 out of 10 failures at the plate…
I fully agree , J Gallo needs to grow his beard back .. I def feel sorry for him , no joke .. But as a Yankee / Bronx born fan , I feel sick about the whole situation .. I wish him well .. I will watch him next year , where ever he may be playing .. -- and prospering ..
He hasn't been able to change his swing to adapt. These all or nothing players end up costing games, and yeah he's a top defender in the outfield but when you've got a team that's steamrolling every franchise but the Astros, you need someone that can actually hit.
Don’t get used to Matt carpenter hitting like babe Ruth. I’m a cardinals fan and he did that same flash of greatness from time to time followed by a lot of disappointment
As a long-time Ranger's fan....I was never impressed with the 'all-or-nothing' aspect of Gallo's game, especially after seeing the fruit of Ron Washington's emphasis on 'productive outs' while the Rangers were in the mix for the title every year. This may take a total reversal when MLB's new shift rule is applied, but I've just never felt he was a 'gamer' and that he shriveled rather than shined when the situation to impact games were highest....and that was in Texas. It's a different tier of shine a player better bring to the Bronx, and it just doesn't seem to fit him.

And NOW in LA he is playing like beast!!! What a joke
I was literally waiting for a video to watch thank you
A report I saw from John Heyman indicated that the Padres and the Rangers are in involved in a potential trade for Gallo to some extent
I’m sure he’s begging to go back to the rangers 😂
Cashman will be lucky if he can trade Gallo for a bucket of KFC chicken
Extra Crispy or Original????
@@MikeHart72 yeah, even if i wanted Gallo, i just wait for a release or his free agency in the offseason.
2:12 I remember seeing at the park. Even the Tigers crowd was wowing lol
Joey pico de Gallo is doing fine and well in LA lol
Heh, i can just call my yankee fan father.😉 by now, i am pretty sure rhe family pets probably hide when Gallo is at bat to avoid the profanity.😂
@@demonkingbadger6689 LMAO that’s hilarious sounds like my dad during cowboy games when Prescott makes a mistake 🤣
@@Mopar6ix heh, well my dad hates the cowboys, but his niece, my cousin is a fan, and he always like to call her and troll when they lose.😁
go back to Texas! Astros fan here and I want the best for this guy.
FAILED EXPERIMENT IS MIGUEL SANO OF TWINS
Completely agree, his defense just does not at all make up for his horrible hitting. Great video.
Now he’s with the dodgers and he’s kicking ass… showing off his defensive skills as well… glad the dodger gave him a chance … let’s go blue!
It’s all mental, dude came out and talked about his problems with anxiety while he was a Ranger and has completely fallen off a cliff since the rumors of him to the Yankees started
They failed Joey Gallo, rangers shouldn't of traded him
I agree
You win some and you lose some. I like Joey Gallo. By all indications he really busts his butt. Unfortunately I think it’s more mental than physical. I hope a change of scenery will get him back on track. He has too much talent.
Was honestly waiting for this video
I just watched Dalton pompey play for the Guelph royals in ontario. It's crazy to see him play for the jays then scoot down that far right after.
The analytics nerds have defended him all season. I swear those same people would find a way to support Bill Cosby at second base.
Analytics have their purpose except when they are used to try and make bad players look good. I actually had one guy trying to convince me Gallo was on the cusp of being elite by using analytics
@@MikeHart72 apparently, striking out must get you positive points in WAR.😁
This video needs to address WHY the experiment failed. That's the difference between a good and great video.
That explains why FuzzyYT no longer describes Gallo as "myyyyyy friend"
Thank you very much, Yankees. Gallo is doing juuuuuuuuust fine with the Dodgers.
It's really sad this is happening to Gallo but he has to go, Benintendi is brought in to hopefully produce. I Hope Gallo has an upside in his career soon but unfortunately it's not with The Yankees.
A guy who strikes out 45 out of 100 times is not qualified to play professional baseball at any level
Heh, that is the kid at the end of the little league bench who only play in blow outs type levels.
Could be worse: He could actually make contact and ground into doubleplays.
@@demonkingbadger6689 send ur sister to me after dawn
@@paulpinball9952 i mean doubleplays are of course worse. But, not a good defense of not making contact. A lot more can go right making contact, and anybody who uses the DP argument has gone too far down the analytic hole.
@@demonkingbadger6689: ,,,or understands the ramifications of rostering such an incomplete, overpaid player.
Always liked him when he was in Texas. Always watched his at bats while casually flipping through games. His situation clearly proves how ones mentality affects his game. GL bud👍
Love the content bro, keep it up!
Thank you so much!!!!!
This Video didn’t age well. NY has fallen off the cliff
I have been looking for a new video All day thanks for the daily upload for awhile now
Jason Heyward To The Yankees Anthony Rizzo Back To The Cubs Getting his Number 44 back in the Cubs Jersey
You are such a good RUclipsr and you should make this a tv podcast
4:20
OMG you're so right! I'm actually very worried about the ability of Red Sox fans being able to cope with seeing Benintendi in pinstripes... I can't remember any other time where they've lost a beloved player to their long time New York rivals.
Babe Ruth lol
@@screamingbanana4391 Who?
This wouldn't ever happen, but imagine the baseball gods got so pissed about Benintend beingi in pinstripes that they cursed Boston with a century's long World Series drought?! That'd be crazy and unheard of! 🙃
Roger Clemens (who?)
Oh, yeah, That Johnny Damon guy.
I wish him the best of luck in his career.
it’s a lot like with Sony Gray, talented player, good guy, but the high pressure and constant scrutiny of playing in New York especially for a franchise with a history and culture like the Yankees can be very difficult and overwhelming, he’ll go to a small market team and bounce back
Awesome video
Gallo is exactly who he’s always been. Idk why anyone thought this would work out.
@@BadMoonRising92 Even though your comment shows just how bad Gallo has been his entire career I have to correct you….he is even worse than you said
Gallo has managed to hit above .209 for a season only once…..that’s it only once, not the 2 times you said.
As a San Diego fan, we already have a former Yankee slugger (and strikeout machine) in Luke Voit… all due respect to Gallo, but I hope he lands elsewhere…
that is the Yankees assembly of the past decade and will come to rear it's ugly head again in the playoffs.
They also failed by reissuing A-Rod’s number
I’m not suprised it didn’t work. The Yanks didn’t need a low average, high strikeout power guy on their lineup when they had enough power hitters in that offense. I get that they didn’t give up a lot for him and needed the left handed bat, but Gallo was a bad fit. Yankees needed hitters, not analytical experiments
He was a Texas Ranger, what did the Yankees Expect, but then again, IKF was also a Ranger, and he's one of their best Infeilders.
Not a Yankee fan but a change of scenery would do him good. Not everyone is cut out for the NY market.
Josh Smith, Glenn Otto, Ezequiel Duran, and Trevor Hauver. Three of the four have played in the majors this year and have done well. I think NYY gave up too much.
Glenn Otto has not done well in Texas, Josh Smith will be an everyday player for a while and Duran could possibly be traded this deadline
As a phillies fan I can relate. They sign Nick c in the off-season from the reds and th dudes been garbage
Has a fan of defense, a Schwarber, Castellanos outfield makes me wish for blindness.
Carpenter was in Gallo's spot a short time ago, the difference is he took advice and did everything he could to be relevant again. Gallo stubbornly refused to change his approach, it's painful to watch him hit into the shift over and over and over again.
I never see him hit into the shift.
Mainly because i never see him make contact 😉
You should look up "Joey Gallo bunting" on the 'net. He's been working on beating the ridiculously exaggerated defensive shifts since late in his Rangers stint, but one video's headline indicates he's "begrudgingly bunting." That would be a shame because, as you can see, he's very good at it; after all, it's the easiest way to make bat-on-ball contact. One wonders if Yankees management was actually more begrudging than Gallo. If so, this partnership never had a chance. If not, Gallo's career could be at a crossroads when/if MLB bans infield shifts in 2023.
I could buy rhat, yankees seemed hellbent on turning every hitter into a 3 outcome hitter the last few years.
It wasn’t an experiment . Joey gallo was a tested player with great ops every year. High obp and hits tanks. He has not done any of that . It was more of an experience than experiment
Actually they're offense hasn't really been the same since they all star break. Only judge has continued to stay hot.
It’s time for a change of scenery. I think he can be good. It just looks like NY was never a good fit
Joey gallo has said repeatedly that he REFUSES to change his swing. What kind of ball player doesent adapt to the situation/slump. He would rather waste an entire year striking out instead of trying to fix his swing and help his team win.
Mentioning Matt carpenter in related to the Yankees recent success before dj Lemahieu is crazy
Another one of Brian Cashman‘s well calculated acquisitions, if he were any more of a genius, he’d be in the Special Olympics
yeah trying to trade for every player in the league must be a REALLY hard job
He does a good job on the pitching side generally, but he is abysmal with hitters
@@demonkingbadger6689 yes, I’ll be sure to discuss that with Sonny Gray as well as Jobba Chamberlain
@@yell0wberry oh i know he has misplayed on that side, and i really hate defending him, but i cant deny he tends to deep pitching staffs, especially on the relief side. I now feel dirty for defending him.
Now can we also get the MLB to scrap the shift ban now that Gallo is no longer be playing for a big market team?
Also, he looks so much like Rizzo with a helmet and clean shaven I think he just got tired of being confused for him.
A guy that batted .180 the season before, and .220 with the Rangers that season. I hope those weren't blue chip prospects they gave up. Cuz this dude didn't exactly crater. He just took a step back.
The mafia has him shook. The Gallo brothers are pissed! The Lucchesi family invested some money on him. Bad bets!!!
@fuzzy my friend 😂😂😂
I thought I told you to trim those side burns!
Gallo is like buying a performance car that looks great, but gets 7 mpg and has numerous mechanical problems, sitting in the shop half the time.
Would make a great DF (Designated Fielder)
Capital idea! You need to get on the phone to Mook Manfred, QUICK! It could be the only MLB rule change under his command that everybody would endorse.
A.L. East is the best of the best and playing in New York adds to the pressure to preform.
It always sucks when good players can't preform in NY, reminds me of the Sony Gray debacle.
Benintendi should do fine, he didn't mention that Kansas City is not exactly a park to hit home runs in so I would think that he could be around the 15 Homer, 30 plus doubles maybe even 40 plus
Joey Gallo is the only player in MLB history to hit 100 home runs before they hit 100 singles. That’s the kind of guy he’s always been.
Can never understand why they keep playing him. Lots of AAA guys who can hit 250 and field fine. The occasional homer isn’t worth the 9 out of 10 failures at the plate…
Benintendi is a great outfielder, but his batting stats aren’t all that impressive.
The heart of the team is Judge, Stanton, Rizzo, IKF, and Trevino.
Would love to see him go back to Arlington tbh
I fully agree , J Gallo needs to grow his beard back .. I def feel sorry for him , no joke .. But as a Yankee / Bronx born fan , I feel sick about the whole situation .. I wish him well .. I will watch him next year , where ever he may be playing .. -- and prospering ..
He hasn't been able to change his swing to adapt. These all or nothing players end up costing games, and yeah he's a top defender in the outfield but when you've got a team that's steamrolling every franchise but the Astros, you need someone that can actually hit.
I’m a rangers fan, it hurt me to get rid of Joey but seeing how he’s done it new york we got a good deal for him. I’d love to get him back
Don’t get used to Matt carpenter hitting like babe Ruth.
I'm glad that double agent Joey Gallo might find his way back home to Texas. I was heartbroken to see him go but the prospects we have gotten are doing fairly well for us. I hope he can go somewhere where he can find his stride.
I do hope we comes back here in Dallas
And returns to form with our rangers again
@@versatilelord8893 mark my words if he returns to his home he will return to form he never once as a Ranger got bood that I can think off his home is here in Arlington bring him back
Joey Gallo makes Dave Kingman, Rob Deer, Gorman Thomas, etc. look like top tiered Hall of Famers.
This “experiment” thing is dumb he was a top 20 player in ops in the first half of 2021 and was an all star there was no experiment in mind when the Yankees traded for him it was a trade to acquire one of the best power bats in the game however he fell off harder then anyones ever fallen off before
