  • Mulch is a protective cover placed over the soil, primarily to modify the effects of the local climate. It is a well-established technology in vegetable cultivation but the success of mulching depends on the selection of right mulching material. The various factors affect the mulch selection but most important is the season of cultivation. Depending upon the month of cultivation, the purpose of mulching will change, in winter there is a need to increase the soil temperature but in summer reduction in the soil temperature, apart from other benefits of mulching. The best utilization of mulch can be done with drip irrigation or drip irrigation with a fertigation facility.
The beneficial effect of most plastic mulches is an increase in temperature which has shown to be beneficial to most plants. There are numerous other advantages to plastic mulches such as improved fruit quality, reduced weed problems, reduced water evaporation, increased yield, reduced fertilizer leaching, reduced soil compaction, improved phytochrome response, and other benefits. Plastic mulches can reflect, absorb, and transmit incoming sunlight, the extent of which depends on the type of mulch. The soil temperature under plastic mulch depends on the thermal properties (reflectivity, absorptivity, or transmittance) of particular mulch in relation to incoming solar radiation. The soil temperature has direct dramatic effects on microbial growth and development, organic matter decay, seed germination, root development, and water & nutrient absorption by roots.
The black mulch (25 microns) was found to be effective during winter but in summer Silver-Black mulch (25 microns)/ white-black (25 microns) was found effective in the cultivation of tomato and capsicum. The black mulch (25 microns) is found to be effective during winter because it increases the soil temperature by 1-30C in comparison to open field conditions. The silver-black mulch (25 microns)/ white-black (25 microns) is found effective during summer because it decreases the soil temperature by 1-30C in comparison to open field conditions.
During the winter season the soil temperature is low and there is a requirement to increase the temperature. The black mulch is suitable for cultivation during winter because it increases the soil temperature. It has been found that farmers are using silver black mulch even during the winter season, though silver black mulch is not very effective in enhancing the soil temperature during winter season. After the removal of winter crop from mulch field farmers are taking second crop during summer with silver black mulch and again during rainy season they are taking third crop with the same mulch. The effective utilization of mulch for three crops depend upon the quality of mulch material especially its UV stabilized property. Though during the removal of crop from mulch there is damage of mulch but by using the same mulch for second and third crop, the farmers are saving time in field preparation, reducing the cost of field preparation and reducing the cost of mulching.
It has been reported that reflective/colored mulch affects the insect behavior and overall performance of crop due to reflection of light from mulch surface but further more studies is required to take its advantage. It has also been reported in some of the studies that mulching affects the quality of produce and it is very interesting feature which can further improve the acceptability of mulching. The new generation photo selective and colored mulch are available in market but some more studies is required in this area to take best advantage of its property in crop cultivation. The removal and recycle of plastic mulches is big challenge and it needs to be tackled. The study on photo degradable/bio-degradable mulch are also reported in literature but apart from its better understanding its cost is major hindrance in its wider applicability.

Excellent video. Keep it up. Next time also include reusable mulch or weed mat for banana farming.

This video and the other videos especially on detachable roof GH, multipurpose GH are far more useful in coming days as they specifically viable for small farmer at lower cost with better yield and obviously greater profits. Here the mulch concept is well explained with different type of mulching material where the usage ranges from controlling of weed and maintenance of proper temperature during winter and rainy season by absorbing light and in summer by reflecting the sun light.

One more benefit to add as mulch reduces the excess water evaporation during summer.

      Dear Mithlesh,
March month (Garmi ke din) me agar soil ka tapman kam karna hai to white-black mulch behtar hoga silver-black mulch ke tulna me.
Lekin samayatah market me silver-black mulch jyada uplabdh hai, is mulch se bhi garmi ke din me mitti ka tapman kam kiya ja sakta hai.
