Original story--although I know little of sci-fi. (I've noticed that this writer loves to emphasize long descriptive passages and characterization vs. active plots.)
At his worst, Lovecraft is notorious for excessive use of description and rarified vocabulary - and after a while there are certain 'themes' in his work that become very apparent - for example, a concern with the implications of one's ancestry, which is quite overt in Shadow Over Innsmouth. As it happens, despite its originality there is a certain 'family resemblance' between this stories and Algernon Blackwood's 'Ancient Sorceries'...
I think I've got an HPL playlist on this channel - I've uploaded two or three readings (Innsmouth, Mountains, The Tomb) and a couple of documentaries that you may like. There are lots of HPL audio dramas that I can't share on here but which I can recommend. The HP Lovecraft Historical Society has produced more than twenty audio dramatisations of Lovecraft stories which can be purchased from their website. They're very good. There's also an episode of the old US radio 'Suspense' which is an adaptation of The Dunwich Horror which you can find on youtube. My favourite, though, is a reading of The Whisperer in Darkness recorded from a US radio station and shared in full on youtube. It's an old, crackly recording but I love it for that - it almost sounds like it was recorded on one of the wax cylinders in the story..!
