We Ran Out! Let's Review How to Extend the Quality Shelf-Life of Rolled Oats

- Regular rolled oats are one of my favorite foods. We eat them almost every day in one form or another. I was incredibly frustrated when I realized that I had allowed my stash of regular oats to be depleted. We were blessed that it happened while oats were still available in the store.

A pesticide linked to reproductive and developmental issues in animals was found in oat-based foods sold in the U.S., including under major brand names like Cheerios and Quaker Oats, according to a recent peer-reviewed study.
Chlormequat was detected in 80% of people tested in three geographical regions of the U.S. between 2017 and 2023, according to the study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.
Researchers also found that "the concentrations detected in 2023 samples were significantly higher than previous years' samples."
While some studies published in the National Library of Medicine linked the chemical to reproductive or development issues in animals, it raises "questions about whether it could also harm humans," EWG researchers noted.
If you Oats came from any other country other then the US there is a good chance the Oats are tainted with Chlormequat
I don’t buy a lot of oats as I’m the only one in my family that really likes them. I would LOVE to see your granola recipe!!!
Will do!! It's super easy. I'll make a short next time I make it :)
Me too!! And the overnight oat recipe too please. ❤
I do have quite a bit of oats stored. It's probably pretty tied up with my rice and beans. I love how versatile oats are. Breakfast and dessert are a no brainier but my grandmother, who grew up in the depression, would always use them in her meatballs and meatloaf as a binder and to stretch her grocery budget. I am forever grateful she imparted such wisdom in me in the short time I knew her
Would love to hear of your go-to granola recipe....or maybe you already have a video on that. 😁 Oats are our family's go-to breakfast.
Rice and beans. Are the top ones in our pantry
We do have a hundred pounds of oats in storage.
Wheat, beans, rice, those are. my top three. I have a years worth of LDS food in cans.
Oats are $34.50 for 50 pound bag at my local Mennonite store
Great job Jonathan and Kylene. Happy trails!
We eat oats for breakfast nearly everyday. I definitely need to get some more!
Thanks for the video. I was recently surprised to see that a mouse had found its way into a plastic tote. So, make sure it's mouse resistant too...
I also recently discovered that my storage of oats was low. I've bought more, but need to re-package them for longer-range storage. Since I need to avoid gluten, I store ground tigernuts (nothing to do with tigers and not a nut, but rather a tuber). They have a protein/carbohydrate/fat profile similar to dairy milk and taste, to me, a bit sweet with a touch of vanilla. In the future, as I have more money, I want to purchase a grain mill and store whole tigernuts and oat groats.
Crazy to think of the price increase.
I'm not sure what my number 1 food would be because I always think about how a variety is needed for nutrition. However, the shelf stable foods we probably use most are white beans and jasmine rice. Oats are up there, though. I use them in baking and as the bread filler in meatloaf. When I ran out of whole wheat flour back in 2020 (an oops moment, like you experienced with your oats), it was easier to grind my oats into flour than it was to grind the wheat berries.
Other than oats as breakfast (or dinner) cereal and granola, wish you would share some of your oats recipes 😋
Today I tried to share the name of a site I found that had 10 no bake granola bars recipes. I guess it was deleted because the post is gone.
Oh, sweet of you to reply .. thanks for trying .. I'll Google granola bars and see what I get .. thanks again ❤@@rhodasmith2195
I keep whole corn for grinding into corn meal.
Great video. Thanks.
I store a variety of flour as well as wheat kernels along with oats. The bread I eat everyday for breakfast is a combination of wheat flour and oats. I also add various seeds (pumpkin, hemp, and flax).
We also eat oats just about every day. Steel cut is preferred over Rolled.
Why did your switch your brand of mylar bags- I bought a trial pack of the wallaby because of your videos- I haven't used yet- just curious on why you changed
SaW this response in the comments - "I prefer the oxygen absorbers from PackFreshUSA and there is a wider assortment of options."
i would LOVE some oatmeal recipes!!!
we store a bunch of oatmeal, but i really need to do another inventory...
I recently purchased four (25-pounds each) on sale for $15 a bag. The shelf-life was soon to expire so I got a deal. They’ve all been processed (in Mylar with oxygen absorbers and in plastic buckets). I expect the oats to outlast me and be there for my family in time of need.
It may be overkill but I put the mylar bag in the bucket, add the grains and an O2 absorber, seal all but a half inch, insert a plastic tube attached to the FoodSaver, suck out all the air I can, and then seal that last bit. Then I leave it out in the kitchen where I can see it a day or two later, to make sure it is vacuumed tightly (you see the grains hugged by the mylar.) If the vacuum didn't hold I know it is a bad bag, which only happened twice I think. BTW I have had rodents eat through those heavy duty Rubbermaid trash cans no kidding. Big gaping holes!!! That was in the barn though. No rodents in the house thankfully.
Ah, yes -- they can eat thru plastic. It makes me think that I need to find a metal storage box as protection for the plastic containers.
I use metal file cabinets. Free on trash day! Also, large empty popcorn tins, free on trash day.
@@user-cw7kq5gh4k thanks I have about 10 4 drawer empty filing cabinets and a problem with squirrels. Now I have a solution 🤗😁
I have water purifier kits - very big medical supply - emergency cooking - emergency lighting- home protection - emergency food gardening supplies - some food storage but no where near enough - working on that and water supply. I feel like I’m on my way but no where ready
Rolled oats is one of the few dry goods you can eat without cooking it. Handy.
I love eating raw oats with a glass of water😁. I also like raw potatoes with a bit of salt and a glass of water. People think I’m weird 🤪
@enascott5963
You can eat small amounts of raw potatoes but to be digested properly without ill effects. Potatoes really need to be cooked for people and animals. They are in the nightshade family of plants. But unlike tomatoes, they should not be eaten raw.
How long can you keep them in the store packaging and can you repackage them after a long time?
Yes I am looking for the same information
I store regular bird seed and black oil sunflower seeds in regular 5 gallon plastic buckets to feed the local birds all winter with good luck so far no rodents have been able to chew their way into them. I wouldn’t bet against a hungry squirrel though. 🤔
Mine got infested with bugs. Freeze them for a couple of days if you can before storing but not sure if bug eggs survive a freeze.
I have to agree with a few others: favorite is rice and beans. Sure, technically, that's two items, but they're a good team!
Crazy how much oats have went up. Thank you for the video. Do you have a specific bucket/gamma lid brand or variation you recommend?
Whatever you can find will work. If you line it with a Mylar bag you don't have to worry about it being food grade or having an airtight lid. Some bucket lids aren't actually airtight. I'm happy repurposing restaurant or bakery buckets.
I picked up a 50 pound bag of oats today and the rice had dropped $5 a bag. It was $34.50 today it was $29.50
Steel cut oats is my favorite and rolled oats are my husband favorite
I'm surprised Jonathan doesn't have a complete inventory in a color coded excel worksheet to track every calorie in every bucket! LOL. My number one is wheat for my sourdough bread.
LOL!! He actually does have a spreadsheet where he tracks everything. However, his wife is not good at reporting what she takes from storage :)
Would love your granola recipe too. I see cashews one of my favorite raw nuts😊
I also give oats to my girls sometimes as treat. Aka chickens. I make granola bars with sourdough and oats comes out really good.
Granola bars with sourdough? Oh please do teach me!
What recipes do you use most of your oats in?
Hello! Granola, overnight oats, no bake cookies, and I replace a lot of flour with oat flour because I'm sensitive to gluten.
My number one item is flour! We are carb addicts and love our breads and pastries!
I would say my number one is Jasmine rice . Next is oats, followed by all forms of cocoa and chocolate.
Gotta love that cocoa!!
@@derr2438 I’m mad . I’m late to the Jasmine game. Once I tried it , it was amazing but I stored a lot of white long grain.
@@TheProvidentPrepperI started a subscription for Hershey’s cocoa to be delivered monthly. I also started a subscription for dark chocolate bars to be delivered.
Was that the price for organic or non-organic oats?
I bought an oat flaker, fantastic!
what do you use it for? im thinking of it.
@@tlflora turn whole oat groats and other grains to flakes, ie: make fresh rolled oats without the vit. depleting heat treatment
Can also make meuseli and toasted granola but fresh.
Thanks for commenting
I keep oats, pasta and rice in original sacks, up to 12 months, not had any problems, I'm trying to learn to make more rice based meals 👍
Do you recommend freezing to kill any bugs or eggs?
Where do you buy your rolled oats? Thank you fir your channel I have learned so much from you
Glad that you like it! I get the large bags at a local WinCo market.
I love my freeze dried eggs. I can use them for homemade mayo, hollandaise sauce, baking and just great scrambled eggs. Yum!
Want to share your homemade mayo recipe? :)
Powdered eggs aren't safe to use in uncooked foods like mayo because of botulism. It says so on the can the eggs come in.
Hi Kylene and Jonathan!! Any suggestions on a good homemade granola mix? Thank you very much!!
Mine is incredible. I'll share it in a short soon.
Love your channel!
Kylenes's mic has not been as loud as Jon's the last couple of videos
. No biggie, just wanted you to know.
Thanks!!
Ran out of oats, went to the store and got another 100 pounds the next day. That is not a "disaster". I would say urgent, or even inconvenient, but not a disaster. I know clicks matter and disaster is an excellent word for clicks. I do have to laugh though. Kylene runs out of chocolate and can't get any for a year. THAT would be a disaster. LOL.
Marinated artichokes don't last well past their best by date. Actually they were 19 month past and were just "off". Unpleasant. So sad, as I love them in salads and use the marinade as part of the dressing. Perhaps a much cooler storage area ? Just sharing.
If you grow oats yourself is there a reasonable way to dehull them? If you grow oats to feed your Livestock can they be fed with the hulls on? You can grow hulless oats but most of them will be eaten by birds and insects before you can harvest them.
Can you provide the link for your granola recipe, please?
I'll make a short the next time I make it and share it :)
Any reason why you switched Mylar companies?
I prefer the oxygen absorbers from PackFreshUSA and there is a wider assortment of options.
Can you please post the granola recipe?
Good video thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Powdered milk, with oats a close second 😊
I noticed you don’t use Wallaby Mylar anymore? I wondered why? I am very disappointed with them
I think the quality of Wallaby's bags are great but I've been a bit disappointed with the oxygen absorbers. PackFreshUSA produces oxygen absorbers that absorb 3 times what they are rated for and has a larger selection of sizes. I've been really impressed.
White rice.
The _very first_ is that the date is a 'best by' date.
That's nowhere near an expiration date.
I would like to know your granola recipe.
Coming soon!
Free dried meals in a jar.
There's no "Y" in oxidation.
Bacon
I don't know, Jonathan.
I realise that as a fellow Christian, the idea is anathema (maybe), but im fairly sure this IS a legitimate grounds for divorce.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
HEY!!!!!
