Thank you for making your videos! I'm super grateful that I stumbled across your channel because you pointed me in the direction of a gopro 9! I really love your videos! I just started a daily vlog but I don't have a lot of experience with cameras or film making so I got a Gopro 9 just to focus on getting my mind wrapped around the story telling aspect of a daily vlog--- how to keep it interesting and such. This video really helped me out! I've used the Gopro 9 for about 3 months now and have made about 20 videos. Now that I feel like I have the editing, daily vlog work flow and basic videography under my belt with the Gopro 9, I think that I'm ready to move onto a more serious camera! BUT I highly recommend the Gopro 9 for anyone looking to get their toes wet before they jump into the ocean that is VLOGGING. I use the media mod just because its less conspicuous. One of the better go pro equipment review videos I've seen in a while. Great work. I think the Media mod is still the better buy, depends what your purpose. I will have a wireless mic receiver attached to the camera too, so a Ulanzi cage, mic adaptor and wireless receiver is just too 'messy' in my opinion.
I'm glad I watch this video too! I was debating to get media mod or cage +adaptor...in the end I went with rode wireless go +media mod since it less messy 😅
Great info! Had 2 Media Mods but swapping batteries during rides was so time consuming I sold them and got the mic adapter and new cages (SmallRig that's compatible with the Max Lens Mod).
Regardless of topic, your presentation is outstanding! Concise, clear, and simple... Your videos should be used as a high-standard for instructional/informational videos... It was a pleasure learning from you... Keep up the great work!
When we had a GoPro 8 we used the metal Ulanzi vlogging cage with the mic adapter but it made the GoPro huge and heavy. We like to keep things as small as possible when we are out and about. We are leaning towards putting wind muffs on both onboard mics and dealing with that. However, we have the Saramonic Blink 500 pro we might want to take advantage of since there are times we film inside very noisy areas. We are going to do some testing to see. Ulanzi is out since we also like to attach the GoPro to our backpack via a clip and it is just a pain to assemble and disassemble the vlogging cage multiple times a day. Thank you for all of the info.
The metal Ulanzi cage is for sure too heavy; glad they finally made a plastic version for the Hero 9. The Saramonic Blink is fantastic for 2 person vlogging, especially in noisy areas.
I have the hero 9 and started out with the mic adapter. I didn’t like that because the wire is so stiff and awkward so it didn’t take much for the connection to loosen up. You can’t even tell either. The wire pulls ever so slightly and suddenly you are using the camera mic without knowing it. I have the media mod now and I agree with the front and back mic thing. I keep forgetting which one it’s on and I constantly turn the camera as I talk so the sound goes from loud and clear to low and muffled. But I also have an Edutige ETM-001 microphone and it works like a dream. It’s not directional like you said. It’s omnidirectional and it captures sound all around with no issues.
GoPro Media Mod + RODE Wireless Go microphone system for the win! This combination solves the problem with the internal microphones on the Media Mod, as well as provides an audio level indicator regardless of the version of GoPro you're using. It also gives you the HDMI output. And, the Rode Wireless Go can be used with the GoPro Mic Adapter and a Ulanzi cage, too!
I use the new Ulanzi with a mic adapter because the old metal (and plastic) obstructed the front facing display, which is the main reason why I got the Hero9 instead of the Hero8, and it allows me to use the Max Lens mod.
You could use the Ulanzi cage with a DJI receiver on top for audio levels, I believe it would also look really cool. I am considering building a light handheld gopro 11 rig with a Ulanzi cage and external mic.
I have the media mod on my Gopro 10. The one thing I really want changed on the media mod is to change the USB-C from a power port to a video transfer port to your computer. I'd rather have it this way because changing the battery is more secondary than transferring the videos to your computer more of a primary. You need power to transfer the videos to your computer which is far better than removing the micro sd card when you might not have a micro sd card reader on hand. Besides I already have a 3-port battery charger. One battery in the gopro and 3 batteries in the charger as stand-by.
The 52mm thread on the Ulanzi cage can also be used to put on a very nice lens cap and also makes it possible to use a teleprompter. That’s why I got it (I also have the media mod but prefer the cage). One thing about the hdmi out on the media mod is that it won’t play anything in slow motion even if you record in slow motion.
I currently use a HERO 6, in a Yolotek case (similar to Ulanzi), with the adapter and a Rhode mic, but really interested in a Hero 9 or 10 with media mod. Great discussion!
Ulanzi cage is waterproof, however, if you add the GoPro Mic Adapter, it is exposed and not protected, thus if can get water damage. Media Mod is not waterproof.
Wish I watched this before getting the media mod lol. I contacted Deity via Twitter like you guys suggested and their sales rep is sending me a new mic. Hopefully that should fix the issue because my media mod seems to be working well. Thank you so much for your help. I love your content because there’s not a lot of RUclips channels by GoPro vloggers. If you have any videos about good vlogging settings for GoPro those would be awesome. There are good things about the Media Mod 😊 Really hope the new Deity works out for you! We need to do a GoPro vlog settings video, perhaps this week. Thanks for the reminder, and for watching our videos 🙏

Excellent review. I appreciate videos like yours that go into the specific details and cover everything. I use the Ulanzi V2 cage with a GoPro Hero 7 and a Rode Wireless Go for vlogging. I remember looking into the metal version of the V2 when Ulanzi released it. It had a couple of improvements over the plastic model. But it was simply too heavy, particularly when you put your GoPro at the end of a selfie-stick. I really admire Ulanzi as a company. They work so hard on their designs and really listen to their customers and continue to innovate. That tripod mount in between the GoPro mounting fingers is pure genius. And so obvious. The fact that GoPro refuses to incorporate a simple quarter-inch tripod mount in any of their designs astonishes me. As you said, GoPro would do well to emulate Ulanzi. To be honest, I've always felt that GoPro should be embarrassed that a small company like Ulanzi completely outclasses them when it comes to the design and build quality of accessories. GoPro has just ignored that market and that customer base completely. They could make so much money if they put some effort into making usable accessories, but for some reason, they just don't bother. They let companies like Ulanzi dominate.
That Ulanzi V2 cage was part of our very first vlogging setup. It was so great -- I'm glad Ulanzi brought back the plastic cage. They're seriously a great company. I'm glad more people have caught on to their products. Now if only GoPro would too!
I love your content. You explain things very well, especially for the beginner like myself. Plus, it doesn't hurt that you're easy on the eyes. Lol! 😉 Keep up the good work.
Question: Does the dead cat mic get in the way (or in the frame) with the newer Ulanzi G9-14? It doesn't look to have the booster like the older one does.

@@Gemini_Connect thank you for coming back to me :) I’ve tried to stay away from the media mod as I’ve gone with the Ulanzi g9-5 (from your videos) for the protection. I had my eye on the rode wireless go but I wasn’t sure if one transmitter would pick up two people stood side by side
Hi Suzi hi Martin, love your explanation and comparasing! Always come here when I need information and it's highly useful every time thank you guys! I'm still gathering information tho before I make further purchases and I would appreciate if and when you have time to tell me your opinion on what are the must accessories for travel and stationary vloging for 8 and 9. Also if the price is absolutely the same would you choose media mod or ulanzi? And lastly just to point out about media mod ,you don't need to get sd card out if you have the subscription coz every content goes to the app tru Bluetooth connection, just for battery have to open the door 😊, nice to see the lamp also 😁
Thank you again for these videos! I purchased the Saramonic blink pro (long ago-super delay on delivery). Can I use the saramonic blink with the media mod on, as long as I change settings or would I have to remove the mod first?
How many years will it take before GoPro has a mic jack? Probably never since they sell the media mod for $80. Probably make more on accessories than they do on the camera itself. How is Ulanzi "pricey" if it's $30 less than the media mod?
Now my question... The SmallRig GoPro HERO9 Black Cage 3083 why is it cheaper and isn't better to have mic mount under the cage? (So it less protruding) love to hear your feedback! Good job with the video and I enjoy using Deity d4 duo too 😍
Thank you for this. I have no experience with microphones. I'm going to the jungle and I would like to record the animal sounds, so those sounds will be nearby but most of the time pretty far away. Do you think it will be possible to record these sounds with an external Rode microphone you show at the beginning of the video. Do you have any idea what their reach is of detecting sounds? Thanks!
I haven't dine extensive filming jn that kind if environment, so I'm not sure how well it will do. Personally, I'd have 2 sound recorders -- one external mic (I'd go with Rode) and an external sound recorder like a Tascam or Zoom (these are best at picking up ambient sounds).
I know it sounds obvious, but I think I would stick to the Media Mod, I mean for the G9-14 Cage, can't find any online and might as well stick with what's available.
Hi, if I connect my Go Pro 10 to the media mod without the battery, then connect it to a power bank, will it continue to work? I am planning to do MotoVlogs and battery draining fast is one of my challenges. Thank you.
Well for me wind noise is really important. Wind noise is killing me. I'm stuck between media mod and microphone adapter. Can you use media mode in rainy weather? And which one you recommend?
The media mod is great but the design is so inconvenient when removing the SD Card or Battery. And…. The space given for the screw is wayyy too tight. Please GoPro, help!
I just got my Media Mod for my GoPro HERO9. One of the reasons I got it is because you DO NOT have to take the camera out to recharge it: you simply plug your USB-C cable into the USB-C input/output on the Media Mod. Charges your battery very easily while leaving the camera in the Media Mod!
Select the MTP setting on your usb settings on your GoPro 9 and plug the USB c from your media mod into your Mac or Windows computer. It will be identified immediately. Open Image Capture program first on your Mac though. Download your videos!!! The media mid is awesome!!!
What are the filters for? Also, I'm just getting started doing this type of stuff, and I really appreciate your videos so I don't have to spend a bajillion dollars figuring this stuff out
Great video! Maybe I am crazy, but I prefer the heavier metal cage for my gopro, I feel like it adds some stability when shooting handheld. And yes, GOPRO, Listen to these guys, improve the UX for the damn mediamod! it's an awesome add on, but a horrible experience to use.
To each their own -- I'm sure there are times when having the metal cage is useful. It certainly feels more solid and secure than the plastic one. I like that there's finally a lighter version of the metal cage.
@@Gemini_Connect i think i just like the heafty feel to it. It feels more stable when i’m holding it. Which could totally be in my head. And honestly, with horizon leveling and hypersoomoth 3.0 its not like i need crazy stability lol. I shot an video just walking around Bangkok today looking at the footage you might think its on a gimbal.
You need ghe gopro mic adapter to add a 3.5mm mic jack to GoPro. Then plug the mic receiver cable into the adapter and clip the receiver to the Ulanzi case cold shoe.
@@Gemini_Connect Hi Gemini, much appreciated for your kind reply. I checked video again and find the answer - you told that more fit and accurate, I missed this for the first time because difficult to understand foreign language. I'm from Russia. I will buy media mod and synco g2 as rode is high price for me, but quality is the same. Have a nice day and happy new year!
Let’s say you’re 3.5 mic jack falls out and your using the Media Mod on the 9. Will the GoPro default to the Media Mod’s mic, or not, because of how you have to select your mic preferences?
How does your mic jack fall out? I don't think that is possible. The cable could fall out, but not telhe mic jack. It would likely default to the Media Mod mics.
@@Gemini_Connect That was just for illustration purposes. Could be a short in the jack, the wire, inside the unit itself, etc. In other words... I don’t have my mic yet; the D4 is coming today. And for the D4, I have to set mic plus in preferences, correct? So I do this, pull out the plug, and if I don’t see my levels, that means it doesn’t default to the Mod’s mic. If it does default, and I see levels, how do I know I’m shooting through the external mic, that it didn’t take a crap?
@@elliotrather730 Audio levels show up even when using the Media Mod. You can tap or blow on the external mic to check if the audio levels correspond, and that's really the only way to check if it is properly connected. Take a day to experiment with the setup and it'll be apparent what settings you need.
@@Gemini_Connect It just arrived! Along with my 3-battery Telesin charger and ridiculously huge and cheap 61-piece grab bag of accessories for 27 bucks. I need a martini first, and I’m not even the martini type!
The worst part about getting anything from the official gopro website is the import fees and taxes/handling charges. I'm from Canada and after the gopro plus, it showed me 65 bucks and at the checkout with all taxes and everything included it was like 120$ whereas on Amazon prime its 109$ plus taxes which came to 122 for me.
@@Gemini_Connect Thanks for the great review! I would most likely go for the rode videomicro now since it's on sale for 69 cad on Amazon! I was really confused between the two! Keep the videos coming.
This is the second of your videos I watched about mics for gopro9. Unfortunately in neither of them you are mentioning waterproofness. I do water sports and to me it is number 1 question. I can’t find answers. Thanks.
@@Gemini_Connect Hmm ok. It is important to see mic levels. But I bought the Gopro 9 for my girlfriend. (meaning I'm not spending much more) I have one of those adapter cords, and a Comica clip-on wireless lav I will let her use. I will see if I can clip the wireless receiver to the tripod or even a rubber band. Kind of sick of camera proprietary tricks.
I use the hero 9 with the media mod and the rode wireless go for my microphone, and gopro shorty tripod to keep it super minimalistic. I also use the hero 8 with no extras as my secondary camera. And for b roll or higher quality footage i use my a6600 with a sigma 16mm and deity d4 duo with a joby tripod. I also have an a6500 as a secondary with the sony 18-135, and i use the rode videomic go with it. That's my complete setup 😁👍
I got the GoPRO hero9 as a gift last year and though it's still unused, I'm about to unbox it and set it up and see how much i can get out of it for my future RUclips videos.
@@Gemini_Connect thanks, is there anything that you need to do in the settings? And can you plug it in after camera is on or do you need to turn it off thin install the external mic and thin turn gopro back on,,, Or does it matter?
Go into Preferences - Mods and select powered mic if using a mic with a rechargeable battery, or standard mic if no battery in the mic. You can plug in and unplug mic while recording.

Not that I know of. Usually you need the cage for the cold shoe mount to add a microphone.
Which Vlogging Setup better protect gopro hero 9? Ulanzi Case or media mod??
on the new ulanzie cage can you use the gopro lens mod
How about for gopro10? It's the same problem?
I think as s traveler its is to use media mode..no hassle..
I know it sounds obvious, but I think I would stick to the Media Mod, I mean for the G9-14 Cage, can't find any online and might as well stick with what's available.
extrenal microphone or wireles?
Hi, if I connect my Go Pro 10 to the media mod without the battery, then connect it to a power bank, will it continue to work? I am planning to do MotoVlogs and battery draining fast is one of my challenges.
Thank you.
I don't think so. Pretty sure you need a battery, but if it is connected to the charger, it should keep it running longer.
I am needing a good sounding setup for my motorcycle. It will be mounted to my helmet. What’s going to be the best way to get audio at high speeds?
Audio of yourself speaking? A wired or wireless lavalier microphone.
Excelente video!
Thank ypu for your content.
Well for me wind noise is really important. Wind noise is killing me. I'm stuck between media mod and microphone adapter. Can you use media mode in rainy weather? And which one you recommend?
Neither the Media Mod or Mic Adapter are waterproof. I'd go with the Media Mod. It is a better and more secure fit.
The ulanzi v2 cage should be able to mount the holder at the bottom looks cleaner than on the side
Its literally worst so i bought v1 lol
the new ulanzi cage is exactly like the SmallRig cage :P
They're all pretty much the same at this point. But for the record, Ulanzi came out with this style of GoPro cages first.
Has there been any firmware update for the hero 9 media mod to allow stereo from front and back mic?
Unfortunately no.
Yes, but how do you get your videos off of the GoPro?
Select the MTP setting on your usb settings on your GoPro 9 and plug the USB c from your media mod into your Mac or Windows computer. It will be identified immediately. Open Image Capture program first on your Mac though. Download your videos!!! The media mid is awesome!!!
No need to remove battery or SD card ever!!!
Enjoy Gemini
GoPro already implemented your ability to never have to access your SD card. It's great!!!
Useful
I have a gopro 7 white and I am very happy with it ... it does everything I need: D
and the second reason is that I don't have money for something even better :D so whether I want it or not I have to be happy with what I have :D
Fair enough. The Hero 7 is a great camera. As long as you're happy with it, nothing wrong with that 🙂
Can you use the gopro mod with a gimble ?
If you get a larger gimbal like the Inkee Falcon Plus or Zhiyun Crane M2.
I have a hero 8 and I feel like I’ll just get the ulanzi case. Way more customizable
The Ulanzi case is pretty great. We used it with the Hero 7.

Hello. should i buy gopro 9 or wait for 10? Thanks
New Hero 10 should be out in October. If you can wait until then, do it.
@@Gemini_Connect I ordered gopro 10 already 😜
Hi, how to apply wireless mic to the ulanzi case?
You need ghe gopro mic adapter to add a 3.5mm mic jack to GoPro. Then plug the mic receiver cable into the adapter and clip the receiver to the Ulanzi case cold shoe.
@@Gemini_Connect Hi Gemini, much appreciated for your kind reply. I checked video again and find the answer - you told that more fit and accurate, I missed this for the first time because difficult to understand foreign language. I'm from Russia.
I will buy media mod and synco g2 as rode is high price for me, but quality is the same.
Have a nice day and happy new year!
What is the best for go pro hero 9.. go pro media mode’?
I think a wireless lav mic is the best. No matter which microphone you choose, you'll need the Media Mod.
Can I mount My gopro hero 9 with media mod on 3 way?
On the GoPro 3 Way mount? Yes.
Wait, so can i use the telesin nd filter with the media mod?
Yes, on the Hero 9 Media Mod/GoPro.
Wow, that is a big sifference!
@@Gemini_Connect Thanks for the great review! I would most likely go for the rode videomicro now since it's on sale for 69 cad on Amazon! I was really confused between the two! Keep the videos coming.
Is the media mod, water resistant?
Somewhat, yes. But definitely not waterproof.
@@Gemini_Connect thank you!
This is the second of your videos I watched about mics for gopro9. Unfortunately in neither of them you are mentioning waterproofness. I do water sports and to me it is number 1 question. I can’t find answers. Thanks.
I can't think of any external microphone that is waterproof, so adding any kind of mic makes the whole thing not waterproof.
@@Gemini_Connect For those special times you want to record yourself talking underwater. lol
you didn't see problems with corrupted files using the Media Mod? Another vlogger did
Nope. We had tons of corrupted files on the Hero 8, but none on the Hero 9.
That's a killer setup! It's pretty close to ours, except we use Fujifilm cameras. The Sonys are way smaller though.
@@Gemini_Connect Thanks! Awesome
The custom cage is sooo much better
Anyone have the Gopro Plus that can hook me up with the media mod for the sale price? 🙏🏼🤙🏼
nice one
#nepalinaustralia
I got the GoPRO hero9 as a gift last year and though it's still unused, I'm about to unbox it and set it up and see how much i can get out of it for my future RUclips videos.
Trs or trrs ??? Why is nobody talking about this question win they do a video about hero 9 media mod
TRRS = for phones only.
TRS = for non-phone cameras.
Holy shit dear gopro i as a plumber would design this product better
U look like my ex gf ❤️
