"We'll use an iron chest for this one." Aavak. Suddenly somewhere Bentham starts randomly twitching, getting angry, and thinking of heresy, but not sure why.
Mr,Aavak your voice and mannerisms give off such a welcoming, almost tutorial friendly, vibe but you then turn around and say things like “if I knew it would hurt their brains I’d have done it more “ and it reminds me that you can be quite the devil when given the opportunity
Yes for sure! The timelapses linked to game sound are honestly so good because factorio sound design is so minimalist and yet impactfully beautiful at the same time so it just feels great to the ears
On miner density, you can increase it by undergrounding belts beneath power poles so that the miners are back-to back, leaving only 2 tiles mined by a single miner. It's ludicrously expensive for early on, but worth doing if you need to clear a patch in front of a bus or similar situation.
If you click and drag power poles on a placed blue print, starting from a power pole on the blueprint. It will only put the power poles where they are on the blueprint. Also buildings on the blueprint will be auto-setup, so assemblers will have the recipe set, any filter or conditions will be set. Finally I sometimes find that I can quickly populate a blueprint by placing the cursor over an item on the blueprint, then pressing Q, pressing the mouse button to place it, then press Q again, then moving on to the next item.
I don't know why, but when you edited the building of the medium and large power pole automation it reminded me of old cartoons when they would quickly build up elaborate traps or other things and it made me chuckle.
A couple of answers to your questions in the video: The damage numbers you see on the ammo are base + upgrades. So 3 + 1 physical would be a total of 4 physical damage, of which 3 are the ammo base and 1 due to research. Blueprints before you have drones are good if you use the dropper, default hotkey "q". It would select from your inventory the correct item to place, and put it in the right orientation. It saves a lot of time in a few cases.
Aavak, I must admit that your editing just made me irrationally happy. Placing the buildings with rhythm @17:09 has to be one of the most unexpectedly satisfying things I've seen in a wee while. I've been watching your videos for years now and they always relax me after a long day. Take care and all the best.
Hi Aavak, a helpful building tip: if you press q when hovering over a built/ghost entity you will select that item in your hand. This can be useful when manually building from blueprints as you can quickly build the components.
46:00: One benefit, I think (unless this was from a mod) you can use Q on a blueprint structure to select the item to place, just like an actual built structure.
On inserters energy consumption: I am sure you are supposed to take into account the speed of the arm, which they handily provide now. So divide consumption by angular speed: Inserter: 13.6 kW / (302°/s) = 0.045 kW/°s Fast Inserter: 46.7 kW / (864°/s) = 0.054 kW/°s If Fast was as slow as regular it would consume 0.054 kW/°s * 302° = 16.3 kW/s. Or in other words, it consumes 20% more power per work done.
46:00 That's actually a really good accessibility feature for folks with impaired working memory. I can forget what something looks like in the split second it takes to move my eyes from my reference to what I'm working on. Having the reference as a ghost on top fixes that.
I'd taken a fairly long hiatus from watching your videos (a good 3ish years), and I must say your videos is as brilliant as ever. Loving this return to factorio. Brings back fond memories of that Multiplayer 'AAA' Factorio series you did with Steejo and Arumba back in 2015. There's also a small tinge of sadness, seeing your videos get so few views, despite how much time has passed. I'll definitely be doing my fair part of watching your videos going forward. Hopefully the youtube overlords will be kinder to you.
A tip regarding mining stuff and production in general: Build chest buffers. They will hold onto the excess resources and will feed back into the main bus when it is running low. This gives you more time to fix any production bottlenecks such as depleted nodes. This is something I've learned early on and it is very useful.
Hey Aavak, since you have been focused on power conservation, I would suggest using power switches and tying them into some sort of logic. This will greatly reduce your idle power draw, local pollution, and overall pollution. As examples, set a power switch at the output of your mining fields to detect when the belts are full and power off. Or the head of a production stack and tie it into the chest such that when target number of items is reached the stack powers off. On my most recent game I did it from the start and made it a habit. Now its in all of my blueprints and saves me metric tons in coal.
It's a neat idea, though with miners and most assemblers, they do not have an idle power draw, so it's unnecessary to shut them down with a power switch due to belt fullness, as once they fill the belt all the way up to their output, they shut down anyway. That said, using power switches in general is a very good tactic, but I feel it's best used in combination with accumulators, where the switch can check if the accumulator charge is dropping below certain thresholds, at which point it can shut down non-essential production in order to extend the battery life for essential devices. To some degree this already happens, for example lasers get power priority over miners, etc. But by the time this happens you're already suffering brownouts, using the accumulator as a check you can start addressing problems before they get so severe :)
So happy to see you back in the Factory. I love your style of play and it's refreshing to see. It was in fact your coops with arumba, mangled pork and steejo that got me in your channel. I haven't regretted that yet.
Ah dear Aavak! Hope life treats you well, as well as life could of course. As always you bring much joy to us in Sweden. But to quote you rougly, " Its the steel thats gonna kill us" This is something i noticed after I started anew. My god how the factory just gulp all of it. Just a heads up. Take care
I dont know exactly, but my intuition and experience was that steel accounted for about half of the iron consumption of a typical end-game factory. It's a lot.
4:12 Oh trust me, I know. It was only a few days ago that I saw a text post that was grammatically correct that used the word "had" _11 freaking times in a row._ And then there's the infamous grammatically correct sentence that you can make with nothing but the word "buffalo".
I’m enjoying this so much, and it got me to play along by abandoning my old spaghetti save from an earlier version and start from scratch with v1.0. I’d also vote for a lighting mod, just to make it a little easier for night time to show up on vid.
I've literally checked your channel 2 or 3 times a day for the past week to see if you've uploaded this video. It's been a long time since I was so excited for a youtube series!
What I would consider the most useful part of blueprints before bots is the interaction with power poles. Dragging a powerpole over the blueprint will place only on the blueprint similar to how it spaces them when you click and drag. This can be useful when you don't want the poles spread out (with the 2 spaces of no power between them).
i think the magazines actually only do physical damage, the + is just the increase from researched damage bonuses. i love how you prioritize looks over optimal-ness, it really makes for an interesting playthrough. loving the series, keep it up :D

43:49 Actually whether "defence" or "defense" is correct largery depends where you live. Defence is British (and in English-speaking countries that recognize the Queen such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc.) and defense is American. So both are technically correct - don't worry! 😄

Is there any way to recycle or at least atom smash the stuff you no longer need? Old electric poles, burner drills, wooden/iron chests that sort of stuff?
If ground pipes need normal pipes then they aren't building cos the pipe storage chest takes all pipes before the ground pipe manufactorum gets any. And you don't get purple science materials from biters/biter bases anymore?
Nope, you don't get any biter candy anymore. And yes the ground pipes will compete with the storage chest initially, but once there's a backup of pipes then the ground pipes will fill up :)
No special timelapse sound effects? Surprisingly, I'd kinda fallen out of interest of Factorio. Seeing your return has reignited my passion for it, as it originally did, all those years ago.
Are you asking if I record videos in a batch, or whether I record them one at a time? It depends on how much I want to interact with the viewers, but generally the former.
Hey Aavak, i've been watching you for sometime now, not everything as I don't like everything :) But but but i would really like you to play Spiritfarer. I love the way you think and it would offer me a different way of thinking to watch you play this game. I am already loving Lady Shelab playing this game, please join her. Thank you. *Love&Peace*
Yay more Aavactorio! "we really don't need more than one stack of engines" You're going to need them for electric engines (and as such for robots!) as well as science, so you will need thousands upon thousands of engines soon:tm: I noticed you did not restrict the production of piercing ammo at all, I'm not sure if that's intended, but I for one generally upgrade to better ammo or lasers before using up 48 (slots of a steel box) x 200 ammo, that's a whopping 9600 ammo, that's a heck of a lot of iron and steel to be spending this early in your factory's life, and I am not 100% sure on your lifestyle but I kind of expect based on your previous let's plays that whichever way you intend to defend your base and outposts in the long run, I really kind of doubt you will at any point use 9600 ammo in one go, so having 5 or 6 slots (or a logistics network maximum of 1k or so) available might be prudent.
Does pollution dissipate if you stop making more of it? Would it be possible, though probably against the spirit of the game, to just turn off your generators for a while to shrink your pollution cloud?
Actually i think there is no difference. You should not run out of power at all, and in this very rare moments you could start boilers by hand. And when it happens it usually means that there is something wrong with coal mining so fact that inserters are still working makes no difference. Power? Well, it maybe be worth checking if using coal for inserter itself is more or less efficient than using that coal to make electricity to power that inserter.
@@wieszak1746 mostly just a matter of personal taste. i like the ability to easier kickstart the powersystem after a brownout, or just when setting it up for the first time while still having burner miners and full belts. it also gives a little advantage when i see lights flickering because i start running out of power: electrical inserters would slow down and thus speed up the process of shutting down completely even while there is still enough coal on the belt. but yes, very soon electrical miners will not have filled the belts and everything goes down anyway. still, i would be able to place a few burner miners to let the system kickstart itself instead of mining manually and filling boilers manually. this also sometimes applies to coal train stations where i might use one burner inserter and for all other chests electrical inserters, or one burner inserter and one stack inserter to fill the locomotive with fuel so that it doesn't leave with no fuel after inactivity from electrical inserters (so that it can go back and forth to get more coal from an outpost) @Michael Carter : a single inserter might not be fast enough and a single boiler might not be powerful enough to feed enough coal and produce enough power for kickstarting the system and making the electrical inserters (remember that all of the factory will start running too, maybe even faster and thus using more power after belts have continued running and might be partially empty) run fast enough for continuous normal operation.
@@Anson_AKB "electrical inserters would slow down and thus speed up the process of shutting down completely even while there is still enough coal on the belt" If there was enough coal on the belt there would be no problem and therefore no slowdown, so this just contradicts itself. Burner inserters are pretty bad: they use up more fuel than their electric counterparts do because you burn the coal in the inserter instead of the much more efficient electricity boilers, so you actually accelerate running out of fuel even if they work slightly faster for a tiny bit longer until the factory browns out. Also, if you mine electrically (which I imagine once you go beyond one boiler you will be) the supply will also end, so one way or another you will need to manually do something if you brown out. Whether that's indirect, by putting fuel on the belt for burners to pick up, or direct (and as such also faster): just stuffing fuel into boilers, is mostly personal preference. I tend to leave a self feeding burner miner quad around until pretty late game for the manual restart in case I forget to upgrade coal mining soon enough, but aside from maybe one burner to start with, I never bother with them.
What is worse, heresy or talking about committing heresy and then failing to do so? Any experts around? (You derp'd your repair pack production) Paving the world OR using exoskeletons? Why would you restrict yourself to one of those? ;) The "5 + 0.5 Physical" means basic ammo has 5 base damage and an additional 0.5 due to researched damage bonuses; all damage is physical. "The reality there is, I don't think we need that much engine production." For personal use that's fine; for use in the factory, oh, how wrong you are… *cough* blue science *cough*

Is there any way to recycle or at least atom smash the stuff you no longer need? Old electric poles, burner drills, wooden/iron chests that sort of stuff?
Put them in a wood chest and gun em down
If ground pipes need normal pipes then they aren't building cos the pipe storage chest takes all pipes before the ground pipe manufactorum gets any.
And you don't get purple science materials from biters/biter bases anymore?
Nope, you don't get any biter candy anymore. And yes the ground pipes will compete with the storage chest initially, but once there's a backup of pipes then the ground pipes will fill up :)
Yay!😃👍
more! i need more!
Also the way medium power poles are crooked really triggers me. Why can't they be vertical like the long-range and wooden poles?
O hai there good sir, the sudden break scared me a bit, hopefully everything is fine.
More Aavak vids! More comments for The Algorithm!
You have the best chocolate and I want some lol
looking good
Whelp time to send death threats 6:35
No special timelapse sound effects?
Surprisingly, I'd kinda fallen out of interest of Factorio. Seeing your return has reignited my passion for it, as it originally did, all those years ago.
Nope, no special background sounds, just the pleasant "plop, plop, clunk" of me putting things in place :)
need more
Mr,aavak do you do the cluster episodes or do you record play record play record
Cuz I don’t think the second is sustainable
Are you asking if I record videos in a batch, or whether I record them one at a time? It depends on how much I want to interact with the viewers, but generally the former.
Hey Aavak, i've been watching you for sometime now, not everything as I don't like everything :) But but but i would really like you to play Spiritfarer. I love the way you think and it would offer me a different way of thinking to watch you play this game. I am already loving Lady Shelab playing this game, please join her. Thank you. *Love&Peace*
Play Frame also has a nice Let's Play of Spiritfarer. Just a few episodes in for now.
Why is the main bus only 1 wide?
lots of places your being bottle necked by not using blue arms.
So, does he have the blueprint tools right from the beginning because of a mod, or is it a new feature in 1.0.0?
It's always there from the beginning now, in vanilla :)
Yay more Aavactorio!
"we really don't need more than one stack of engines" You're going to need them for electric engines (and as such for robots!) as well as science, so you will need thousands upon thousands of engines soon:tm:
I noticed you did not restrict the production of piercing ammo at all, I'm not sure if that's intended, but I for one generally upgrade to better ammo or lasers before using up 48 (slots of a steel box) x 200 ammo, that's a whopping 9600 ammo, that's a heck of a lot of iron and steel to be spending this early in your factory's life, and I am not 100% sure on your lifestyle but I kind of expect based on your previous let's plays that whichever way you intend to defend your base and outposts in the long run, I really kind of doubt you will at any point use 9600 ammo in one go, so having 5 or 6 slots (or a logistics network maximum of 1k or so) available might be prudent.
I never stop using gun turrets, and it'll be a while before we upgrade to uranium.
@@Aavak Fair enough, then it makes perfect sense!
Does pollution dissipate if you stop making more of it? Would it be possible, though probably against the spirit of the game, to just turn off your generators for a while to shrink your pollution cloud?
Yup. You can totally clean up that way.
🖤
wouldn't electric inserters work for power plant as long as you left 1 burner inserter to bootstrap the power?
Technically yes, but why have an additional drain on the power when it's not needed?
also, note there was no cannibalism in this episode.
@@wieszak1746 mostly just a matter of personal taste. i like the ability to easier kickstart the powersystem after a brownout, or just when setting it up for the first time while still having burner miners and full belts. it also gives a little advantage when i see lights flickering because i start running out of power: electrical inserters would slow down and thus speed up the process of shutting down completely even while there is still enough coal on the belt. but yes, very soon electrical miners will not have filled the belts and everything goes down anyway. still, i would be able to place a few burner miners to let the system kickstart itself instead of mining manually and filling boilers manually.
this also sometimes applies to coal train stations where i might use one burner inserter and for all other chests electrical inserters, or one burner inserter and one stack inserter to fill the locomotive with fuel so that it doesn't leave with no fuel after inactivity from electrical inserters (so that it can go back and forth to get more coal from an outpost)
@Michael Carter : a single inserter might not be fast enough and a single boiler might not be powerful enough to feed enough coal and produce enough power for kickstarting the system and making the electrical inserters (remember that all of the factory will start running too, maybe even faster and thus using more power after belts have continued running and might be partially empty) run fast enough for continuous normal operation.
I really want you to do robots
What is worse, heresy or talking about committing heresy and then failing to do so? Any experts around? (You derp'd your repair pack production)
Paving the world OR using exoskeletons? Why would you restrict yourself to one of those? ;)
The "5 + 0.5 Physical" means basic ammo has 5 base damage and an additional 0.5 due to researched damage bonuses; all damage is physical.
"The reality there is, I don't think we need that much engine production." For personal use that's fine; for use in the factory, oh, how wrong you are… *cough* blue science *cough*
No views and three likes, what kind of a platform is this xD
such is the power of Factorio.
