Your instructions are very useful for beginners to learn the different techniques. I learn so much by watching your videos! You are one of the best watercolor painting instructors I've seen on RUclips! thank you for sharing your techniques and know how with the rest of us!
Lovely painting. Very good instruction, especially on development of the foreground. I must say that you are on my very short list of the best watercolor painting instructors. I am happy that you recently decided to continue your contribution to RUclips video instruction. It greatly benefits me and countless others. Thank you.
Just beautiful Rick! I sure appreciate you and your generosity of heart to share so much information. You truly are a teacher in every sense of the word and a huge blessing to so many people! Thank you again!
The textural qualities in this composition are so visually interesting, particularly the foreground “chaos”.There is a real sense of space also.Even though there is no sky, persay,we know it is there due to the reflections in the water.
Bravo! Rick, This is one of my favorites. Our Fall colors are slow to come in this year. This beautiful piece of art is so helpful for a piece I'm about to paint. Thank you.
Thank you Rick for this fabulous tutorial. I learned so much from this. I posted my painting in the group. I have to say, this has been my favorite to do of your tutorials so far and the big plus is I even like the finished painting. LOL Thanks again. Can't wait for the next one.
Jeah Im gonna be trying that. I think I will keep it to a card size to get back into it. But I know most of the techniques. Let's see if I can push myself by actually not overworking for once ( Jup thats my issue. Getting better in the watercontrol - finally, took me long enough- but knowing when to stop is a trigger for me to be watching out for )
Great instructions, I like the way you compare the photo with the drawing! and the way you explaine what you do. as a fellow artist, I always try to think would someone like to buy this painting? If not, why? If so why! Whats your thinking on that, Rick! that helps me with composition and subject matter!
Thanks for your comments! The prospect of someone purchasing might influence what subject I decide to paint at times, but it doesn't influence my painting process. Once I start a painting, my decisions are guided by problem solving the design challenges.
Question, I notice that you are using a heat tool to dry the first wash. Do you not have any issue with the heat effecting the masking fluid and baking it onto the paper? Thanks for another great demo
I dry my paper frequently with a hair dryer. I've never had an issue with it affecting the "dried" masking fluid. I highlight dried, because you never want to dry the masking fluid with a heat source. It needs to air dry, but after that, I have no problem using a hair dryer.
Rick, as someone that has Experimented with Watercolor without much Success (me). What would you say that the Most important Element of Being Successful with this Medium is.? Other than the word (Pratice) I like this type of Paintings the Most and would like to Become Better in it. An Thank you for the way that you Explain things in Your Video's. Thy are Very Helpful and Filled with Help to people like me that Wonts to Improve and Succeed in this Medium. 👊😎
Since launching my channel, I've had the chance to interact with people from all around the world. What has struck me the most, when people struggle, is the absence of sound fundamentals and a basic understanding of the medium. You wouldn't sit down to play a song on a guitar without first learning how to play a guitar. I see the equivalent when people are working on complex paintings in watercolor and they lack the basic understanding and fundamentals. Learn how to control a bead of water, get a an understanding of moisture content, learn how to apply a wash. Once your confident in your ability to make the paint do what you want, make sure you have a good understanding of value contrast. A little time invested to understand the basics will go a long way.
@@RickSurowiczWatercolor First of all thanks for the Reply, most ppl dont even do that. Second, i will look over what you have told me and Start there. Good Explanation an it helps to hear advice from someone that understands the Medium and knows the Struggles. I have Recently got a book that i am going through it is By Tony Couch, (Watercolor - You can do it) it has alot if what you just mentioned. An i wld Recommend it to anyone that is Starting out. How Long have you Painted Watercolor..?
I started painting watercolor in the 90's, worked in other mediums before that. In 2016 I started to paint again after being away from it for over 15 years.
Very informative tutorial. You used so many layers to develop the foreground. How do you know to do that? ( ha, I know, you’re a professional!) I also enjoyed watching you paint the reflections in the water. I’ve got to try to use the fine mist spray more! Anyway, thanks again for a great video!
Thanks for your comments Melanie! I try to visualize the layers coming together in the planning stages. Almost like transparent panes of glass stacked on top of one another.
From one watercolorist to another, just cirious, what"s your favorete watercolor paints, or brand? I like grumbecker, and winswer nution, there"s a brand from Japan that" s nice two, , And I get the best results using 300 wt, de arches paper. how about you?
I use a few different brands Holbein, Daniel Smith, American Journey, and DaVinci. I have all the paints I use as well as the paper I like, Lanaquarelle, listed on the studio page of my website. Here is the link. rsurowiczart.com/studio/
