    This is the first in depth Z8 review I’ve seen about the video capabilities. You can see by the Nikon Z8 sales brochure this camera was getting pushed as a video camera that can fit in a gimbal and it’s taken a while for the video guys to come area to this conclusion as Nikon was very late in the game to provide a decent Dslr that could match a Canon 5Diii for video use.

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002 8 месяцев назад +8

      @@TheLinesEnd I would agree the Z6/7 and Z67 II had challenges however, there are other manufacturers that were behind as well and all are now improving. I had issues with my Z6 II and picked up a FX30, later the A7RV, which I then traded for a Z8. In the first few days I saw some issues with the AF but, that was due to me using adapted Sony lens, that all changed when I got native Nikon lens. I'm curious what Nikon cameras you are referring to in your statement?
      I'll add I tried the Zf and the AF on that one is really snappy, great in video, would have been great if they gave the Z8 8 stops of stabilization like the Zf however, the Z8 is great as is.

    Great video on the Z8! It is getting more and more attention lately by folks who do mainly video. I’ve been posting about the Z8 since before it was launched, after trying out a Z9 and hearing it was going to be a baby Z9. The Z8 has most of the Z9 features with the awesome video features but mainly Nikon photo shooters were getting the Z8. As a content creator that ditched my Z6 II to go to Sony (FX30 than A7R V), due to autofocus issues, I traded the A7R V for the Z8 and have been testing and posting videos about this camera and I am still learning it. Kudos to Nikon for getting these cameras into the hands of more video shooters, I can only imagine what the Z6 III will bring and what the RED purchase will bring to hybrid shooters in the long run.

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002 8 месяцев назад +1

      I've been saying Nikon needs such a body since purchasing and using a FX30. Here in South East Asia the FX30 can handle the heat due to the fan but the Z8 will throw hot card and camera warning after 20+ minutes (i'm too lazy to stop and restart my talking head video takes) recording. I wouldn't mint a 4-5" articulating (flip forward) screen built in.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 8 месяцев назад +1

      I actually prefer the z8 design for filmaking. EVF in my opinion is hugely overlooked by many filmmakers, and I prefer the tilt up screen (flip out screens throw balance off on things like glidecams/steadicams). Although an internal fan like the sony fx3 and pansonic s5iix would be good for hot enviroments

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002 8 месяцев назад

      @@legendp2011 If they are unable to do a bright screen, a removable EVF like on the Black Magic Pocket cameras would be fine. I would like to see a screen style like on the A7R V, that does the tilt and flip duties depending on the situation. The Panasonic S1H has a similar design but I don’t think it tilted downwards for overhead shooting.

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002 8 месяцев назад

      @Broskisnowski For some photographers they don’t want video in their camera, the talk of heat management is dismissed as video people should get a camcorder and not use a camera style body. Personally, I was hoping last year prior to the Z8 launch that we would get a second body with a fan built in. Fuji and Panasonic were adding cooling solutions and if Nikon wasn’t going to make a body like the Sony FX3/30 or a box style unit like the Panasonic BS1H, then adding one into the Z8 would have been nice.

    • @danielvilliers612
      @danielvilliers612 8 месяцев назад

      @@waynerm002 You forget you have the z9, which by all account with its bigger body doesn't overheat (Every camera can overheat) in normal conditions. I think until we see what they are going to do with RED, the ultimate Nikon camera. Perhaps shoot 4k with no binding. I have started using the 4.1k raw version lately for some jobs, it is detailed enough for me and the file size are manageable. In fact if the z6 iii comes out with the Rumored specs it might become my main camera. *k for me is too much, I would happily go to 4k, but I don't think we will see a 12 megapixel sensor, so 24 (6k) might be the best compromise.

      Just a question: why are you calling fx3 or r5c as a true hybrid and not true video cameras? I believe Z8, or Sony A series or Canon R5 are more hybrid than the cameras thay you are saying. I would not use fx3 of r5c for photography - so I would hardly call them hybrid cameras. BTW I am a photographer :) :)

    • @waynerm002
      @waynerm002 8 месяцев назад

      The FX3 is a Cinema Camera, not a hybrid. R5 C falls in the same range, while having an EVF. The R5 and Z8 are what most consider hybrids. Panasonic has been doing a pretty good job of integrating fans on their hybrid bodies (S1H and newer S5 II/IIX), I would like to see Nikon do something similar or do a separate cinema body like the FX3/30.

The studio I work at uses A7S3 cameras, but we shoot in the 200M 422 option because our cards aren't fast enough, and I see theres a higher bitrate 600M option (we're getting faster cards). It's ok, but you'll want external power for extended shoots. This camera can run hot depending on your shooting style and external power helps. I generally use mine rigged with a Smallrig 99w battery.

    If every RUclipsr starts to adapt nikon, we all be in a darker era. The image is noisy and nikon ire is really low before clipping, forcing you to underexpose. 😢
    I tested it side by side with bmd/pana n sony n had to underexpose the nikon every time to not clip the highlights 😅

    Still extremely embarrassing for Nikon even after getting their game up and advertising their video being great (which it is) and even after acquiring Red… they still don’t even have a basic shutter angle option. That’s why I bought into the Lumix S series because they have everything a video maker needs and wants.

      The R5C cannot shoot 8K RAW without external power. That is a substantial shortcoming. The Z8 has no such limitation for 8K RAW.

  • @VariTimo
    @VariTimo 8 месяцев назад +1

    None of the footage looks good though. The curve is weird and all the skin tones look off even kind of sickly and gray. I know that this isn’t necessarily a limitation of the cameras but if that’s the base color science it means at least a complete look transform before one could do any narrative work with it.
    Also unusable amount of rolling shutter.
