Political News Briefs: Kamala Harris Campaign Rally Draws 20k; Former Starbucks CEO Considering 2020 Independent Run; Trump Doubtful About Congress Passing Wall Funding
Here are three political news briefs.
The first - Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif) officially started her presidential campaign in a rally on Sunday that attracted over 20,000 people in her hometown of Oakland, California.
Harris emphasized her experience as a prosecutor and criticized the White House by saying, “We have foreign powers infecting the White House like malware.”
Harris has already visited South Carolina and is in Iowa today for a CNN town hall.
The second news - former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said he is thinking of running for president in 2020 as an independent.
There are concerns from Democrats that if he runs, he will take away votes from liberals and make it easy for Donald Trump to win again in 2020.
Axios reported that Schultz brushed off those concerns, saying in an interview with 60 Minutes that he doesn’t care what political party you are in, that he wants to see the American people win.
The third news - President Trump said there is less than a 50-50 chance that Congress will be able to reach a deal on wall funding that he will approve in the next three weeks before government funding runs out. He thinks there is less than a 50-50 chance.
Trump said he doubts he would accept a deal that has less than the $5.7 billion he wants. If it is less, he doubts he will approve it.
Trump has tweeted frequently about building a wall, often using a slogan, “BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL!”
The deadline is February 15 - if there is no deal between Trump and Congress, there will be another shutdown.

NASA Shares Higher Quality Image of “Space Snowman”
NASA has shared a higher quality image of Ultima Thule, the small space object that orbits in the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune at the end of the solar system.
USA Today reported that this is called a “space snowman.” It looks like one. It was photographed by the New Horizon probe in a flyby. It is two spheres that are fused together. It is about 20 miles long and was photographed while it was 4 billion miles away from Earth.
NASA explained that the spheres are from small, icy pieces that came together first in individual masses, then the two spiraled closer and closer to each other and is now stuck together by gravity.
There will be more images with higher resolutions coming in the next month. The probe and the space snowman is moving away from the sun at more than 31,500 mph.

Mass Murders in Louisiana and Indiana
Last weekend, two different men killed at least four people each and were arrested.
The first person is Dakota Theriot. heavy.com reported that he is accused of shooting and killing five people in Louisiana on Saturday.
A sheriff said he shot and killed his mother and father in their bedroom. Other news reports say the woman was her stepmother.
When emergency responders arrived at their home, they were still alive. Both identified Theriot as the shooter, then died.
Theriot then went to a different parish, a different county, and shot and killed his former girlfriend and two members of her family at their home.
This is a total of five people killed.
He drove up north to Virginia and was arrested there. He is expected to be brought to Louisiana to face his charges.
The possible motive for the shooting is anger over not being allowed to live in either home. This is a possible reason.
The second person is Daylon Gamle. Fox News reported that he is accused of shooting and killing four people and injuring another person in Georgia on Thursday night.
Law enforcement said the shootings were targeted, they were on purpose, and it seems to be drug-related.
Gamle drove to Indiana and was arrested there.

Interview with Mary Jane Grant From “Dementia Can Be Beautiful” Video
Yesterday there was a touching video posted on Facebook of a deaf mother, Carmen, who has dementia talking with her CODA daughter, Mary Jane Grant.
That video made an impact on many people. It was shared over 13,300 times. I will show you a clip and then an interview with Mary Jane.
Alex: I asked Mary Jane what made her decide to share this video.
Mary Jane: Mary Jane: Really, ever since my mother showed symptoms of dementia and my father was diagnosed with PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, both happened at the same time, I realized it was important to film our conversations for memories. I feel like I want to preserve something, you know? I also want to document what their progress is, if they are getting worse, is the same, or what. And recently, for the past six months, I’ve posted some of our conversations with my dad and my mother. Because some of those moments are really special. I feel very touched. My goal at first was just to share it with my friends because I wanted to emphasize that I treasure my parents and that I have a special relationship. It is also for support because as a CODA, you see many barriers. I feel that I want people to visit my parents, I want them to show their support. So really, my goal is to create unity and more awareness. Plus, my parents are so sweet and wonderful people. Their hearts are big. They are nice moments to share, with friends.
Alex: I asked her how did she and her family cope with her mother’s dementia.
Mary Jane: We are a part of the “sandwich generation,” you know, dealing with both children and parents at the same time. So, there is a lot of support from each other and from family. But the reality is that it’s just the two of us and some friends who are willing to help. Really, at first, it was very hard to visit. It was hard. Then I noticed that it was a more peaceful experience because I see her as a happy person. Her mind is opened up and everything is new. Every moment is like a new moment. That really taught me a lot. She gave me so many gifts, to accept every moment as new. That is her, that’s who she is every day, every moment. That is really nice. So, she was at an assisted living facility for a while, but she became too isolated. Also for financial reasons, it was tough. So she had to move back. I did try and figure how in my life I can support her while I am working and while my husband is at home, he works from home, and get friends to come and provide support. My sister also. It is really not easy. But a positive thing is that she is really sweet and happy. She is a happy woman! Yeah. So that really helps but dementia, for some, I’ve seen that it is not easy. I’ve seen some who saw their parents change, become different and angry, or depressed. Ooh, that is not easy. Mine became the opposite, they are happier. Yes, it is hard to see my dad’s health regress, he is different. That comes with dementia, but it looks different. So, that is hard. It requires support and care. It is different from my mother. I feel a lot of support from my community and friends. Yeah. That helps.
Alex: I asked her what she would like to educate us about people with dementia.
Mary Jane: Many people have sent me messages asking what should I do when my parents show symptoms, on if I had any advice. Really, my number one advice is this: get support. Start developing a network of people. Friends, family, or co-workers. Start developing a network now. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Go ahead and ask for it. Because I’ve noticed that people feel happy to give. You know, it feels like a gift for themselves to give their time or their support or whatever. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but start now and develop a network of support. You have to. And - and take care of myself. You have to. I get up every morning at 4 a.m. so I can focus on myself, go to the gym, and do other things. You have to. If you don’t, I will become mentally exhausted and worn out. You have to take care of yourselves first. And be patient.
Alex: Thank you Mary Jane for your time and thank you for sharing a very personal part of your life.

MELMIRA Host Melissa Yingst and Partner Socorro García Describes Discrimination by Delta Gate Agent
Last night Melissa Yingst, who is the host of “MELMIRA,” posted a vlog with her partner, Socorro García, saying they were discriminated by a Delta airlines agent at Detroit Metro Airport last night.
They asked a gate agent named Felicia to help them move seats so they could be seated together. They first used an iPhone to communicate with her, but they said she made faces and wrote on pen and paper that the plane was full and she couldn’t move the seats.
When García tried to communicate using that paper and pen, they said Felicia crumbled it and threw it away in the trash. When she tried to walk around to the trash to pick it up, she said Felicia pushed her away.
[García: I walked to the trash where she threw it to pick it up but the woman pushed me. I stumbled backwards. Melissa was stunned and started filming to document everything as we don’t know what would happen. What did it look like when the woman refused and spoke? Look at the video.]
Alex: Comments under MELMIRA’s post by people who can hear said Felicia voiced, “I don’t want to talk.” Then when another Delta employee walked behind her, she asked if she should call the police. She said to go ahead and call the police.
García and Yingst said the airport police actually came and used their voices. They said they tried to explain the situation with the police, but the police said they couldn’t do anything, that they were kicked off of the flight, and would have to book another flight ticket.
They said the crumbled paper was missing from the trash, that the police couldn’t find it.
They had to check in at an airport hotel and was able to talk with Delta via their Twitter account.
Yingst told “The Daily Moth” today that they took a flight out using United and they are now collecting resources to figure out the best approach to this.

Pilot and security are against the American with Disabilities Act. Melissa Yingst and her partner need to call National Association for Deaf, next time. Howard could sue pilot and security. Next time... #AskHoward
