THE TWIN ENGINES
The first engine is growth in earnings i.e. the company should growing it’s revenue, grow earnings, maybe grow its margin, market share and most definitely a company that is growing its earnings per share. The reason why this last part is important is because .. stock prices mirror the earnings per share over the long run
The second engine is a growing price earning multiple. A a price earning multiple or PE ratio is not just a factor of how expensive a stock is but how valuable that company or sector is, to the investors
From example - Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has grown it’s net profits by 11.8% but the stock price has grown by 17%. The delta i.e. additional 6% is coming from an increase in the PE multiplier for the company
CHARACTERISTICS OF A 100-BAGGER
1. Smaller companies find it easier to become a 100x multibagger
2. Long growth runway i.e. more avenues to grow and expand
3. High return on equity
4. Formidable economic moats
5. Resilience of gross profit margins
6. Quality management
YOUR INVESTING BEHAVIOUR IS KEY
The research conducted by Christopher Mayer concluded that it takes a 100-bagger company an average of 26 years to become one. This makes patience a key factor in your success and it’s very likely that you, me and every investor will be tested along the way
For example - Apple’s ride has been a roller coaster all along with the stock going through four different drops of 40% each in the last 20 years. Netflix is an even more intense example with the company losing 25% of its value on a single day, not once as we saw in the January of this year, but four times in the past
To put it differently, when it comes to stocks, he who buys right must also learn to stand still .. in order to run fast
And from that perspective, what an investor needs is a coffee-can portfolio i.e. a set of high-quality stocks that you would buy once and will not touch them for decades
Net net, the success of your 100 bagger strategy will depend a lot on what stocks you put inside that coffee can .. and ofcourse, how patiently you can stash away your investments and be prepared to not look at it for years
