My Dunk League Story

  • This is my truth on what happened between me and the other dunkers on Dunk League season 2 which also led to me not competing on Dunk League Season 3.
    The Dunk Game is a cold world that few will understand. It’s always win or go home situation which makes competing that much more intense. The lesson I learned was to not over promise and under deliver. My intentions were good but circumstances changed. Although not completely my fault, I apologize to all the dunkers for the inconvenience.

    Actually all you guys agreed to split 50k 4 ways.
    I hesitated and said nah. Let’s make it 32k for winner then 18k split 3 ways for the rest, at 6k each. Then all of us agreed to that.

      I said my peace. Unfortunately it didn’t work out how I intended. We all were naive on knowing taxes and everyone expected me to just send out 18k of tax free money. Wouldn’t make sense for me. Blame whistle because I asked them to send everyone their cut and they didn’t. No hard feelings at this point. I’ve done my best to get guys other opportunities to make up for the unfortunate situation.

    • @GeeklyUpdate
      @GeeklyUpdate Год назад +2

      @Chris Staples I could well be missing something, but worst case scenario for the other guys you could have taken from the $50k (net of tax) exactly what you would have received net of tax if they'd paid you $32k. Then you divide the remainder equally between the other guys leaving them to square their own taxes. In that scenario you get what you would have received in any event, the other guys get less because of the initial error, and you'd likely even still have been within the gift tax allowance. Even if you weren't, you could just account for that in what you send to the other guys. That's just one of a number of ways to handle it, but happy to be told why I'm wrong if I am.
      It's entirely up to you if, rather than the taxes being the main issue, you just chose to keep the money, but you can't then also complain about people not wanting to work with you in future.

      @@GeeklyUpdate most people would never willingly share this story. I’m not complaining. As you see I have done my own events and have worked with some of the best talents in the world without these guys. But that’s great you know how taxes work in your field. Apparently for guys who are street dunkers that wasn’t the case during that time. If you watched the entire video I apologized. But some will still find a issue with it. Read my description

    It's always weird to me that these types of niche groups always end up squabbling out into cliques, when you could just band together and be a stronger force. I suppose the direct competition in this situation makes it semi-inevitable, but it's still kinda sad to see.

    Chris, I'm genuinely a fan, but I don't buy that 'too hard to calculate the tax' argument. I can think of several imperfect but workable solutions to that problem without even needing an accountant. Presumably the other guys would have been happy with an imperfect solution that still resulted in them receiving some of the prize money, rather than a solution which resulted in them receiving nothing.

    The best compromise would have been taking the 18k minus the 35% you were paying for in extra taxes and splitting it 3 ways which would be about $3900 per person. Each person might’ve gotten taxed higher for their portion but it’s better than nothing at all.

    4:45 This is where you went wrong dude. Since Kilganon didn't put his hand in, there was no deal. You should have stood firm on that and not kept acting like there was. The fact you told all of them were still good through out the rounds and asked the organizers to split the check means you guys still had a deal. You should have sent them the money minus the highest you can be taxed in your state. Even if its 50% it would have been better than nothing. Respect for sharing this story, when you didn't have to. This type of stuff sticks man, I hope you can take the responsibility and not push it on being “taxed”. Any business owner gets taxed, it’s your job as a business man to figure out how it will work and not just completely disregard an agreement you had with your brothers. Much love but hope you can grow from this Fr.

      @ChrisStaplesDunker  Год назад +2

      Umm this is me taking ownership. You obviously didn’t read the description. And yes it was sloppy on everybody. None of had ever seen that amount of money at one time. And didn’t understand hope to split it. And since this event has happened we’ve all went about it differently. I’ve since split winnings with Jordan Southerland, grabo, Lipek and many more. But I do live in a city where the taxes are the highest in the country. So I take the biggest hit at the end of the day so it became a bigger headache when none of our tax guys. I didn’t need to share this story, I chose to share it. So instead of being negative about a event that happened 5 years ago, recognize that things do happen in this industry and it ain’t all pretty. And I’m NOT perfect. I’ve apologize and have since became more of an ambassador to help dunkers with opportunities.

    Yall saying he's this and that but honestly I would've done the same thing. First and most importantly its that companies fault for not splitting the check as he requested! Then imagine not knowing much about taxes like Chris and finding out in tax season much later that he's only keeping close to 30k of that. It wouldn't of even been worth splitting at that point. Plus it's not his job to calculate who gets what like some accountant with taxes involved. Yes they made an agreement but circumstances changed. Sure he should've been better understanding of taxes beforehand but he's saying he learned his lesson and tried to make it up in other ways. He's not a bad guy from what I see and stuck to his word on other agreements when the company didn't screw up on checks. At the end of the day you won Chris and if they wanna still be salty over the 3-4k they could've had years ago then fuck em bro you've made your mark in the dunk world more than all of them
