I just love having a saw builder that has a bigger stage with the whole RUclips channel and everything saying hey man it’s a work saw and a squish of 25 thou is kinda where I’m looking to land because over time and with the carbon buildup of really using it to cut wood and not just a cookie cutter or display piece and if you are really looking to make a work saw that you can really use! I’ve been trying to explain that a 25 thou squish is just great for a work saw especially if you are going to just sell it to anyone who wants it … he might not really be a super throughput guy and he might actually also use be using his gallon jug of Mercury Boat motor oil or something else like that he’s got a couple gallons of and wants to use it before he goes out and buys something else so yes, 20 thou or 18 thou on a get-together build and just something that you are going to blast through some cookies occasionally doesn’t matter. A real saw that’s going to work for a living should really have a little bit more working room for that piston’s roof so a little carbon buildup won’t make it smack one day!
You can totally reuse base gaskets, the trick to it is to soak the gasket in two stroke oil really well before you install it, I sometimes will spread a little grease on it as well. Then you can pull the top end a year from now and it will come off cleanly and you can usually reuse it. This kind of experimentation is key, it's how we all get new ideas and how so much of what is known about two strokes came to be. It's all about the "I wonder what would happen if I try..." Great work!
Well, I just took the OEM 50mm piston and cylinder off of that 272xp I built. I now have a OEM 52mm piston and cylinder. This will be the third cylinder and piston attempt. New carb, spark plug and everthing else is new. Bright blue spark and there was gas in the bottom of the case when I pulled the 50mm off. Will be attempting to fire it tomorrow. If it's a no go the only thing l can think of is switching out the mag from the 272xp that I have running. From there all I can do is order a new crank and break it down again. It is becoming a bigger pain than it's worth...😅😂😊. I am anxious to move on to my 371xpg. Heading to the beach. I think that pop up is going to make your saw sing. Excited to see it run. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
Love this build sequence, right down my ally, thanks tinman didn't really do much but, mod saws, muffler, gasket delete, better airfilters. That can be a noticeable increase. I really started porting saw after that echo how to port a chainsaw, and the cutaway videos. I put every saw on a timing wheel now. You gave me the confidence to grind on and change port timing. Thanks Tinman...
Hey tinman hope the family is doing well, stay cool out there. Can’t wait to see what the end result is for your strong work saw 371/372 builds Take er easy
Gonna be interesting to see if you can feel the difference between the piston… I’m allergic to the tight squish and love my 25 world! 😂😂👍. I’m already on the need a 268 piston and a couple turns to help her fit and then I’m getting closer to the 101 zone and getting jiggly with it! LMFFAO! I was a huge fan after the video where you were getting the blizzard of build request and you said… I’d much rather help you get it down and help you make it yourself! Definitely really cool to see what different dudes are doing and how they do what they do! I’m definitely a little lazy and I will knock off the edges on my side of the piston and get the blowdown change’s and I’d much rather make a little piston mod and not change the cylinder dimensions! Or shave some piston skirt material up and get the timing on the intake side or whatever! There is so much variation in the squish band measurement and the combustion chamber shape and volume and how that fuel charge is getting popped out of your upper’s and how it’s behaving as it’s blowing across your piston roof and all that little minutia that there’s just so many different variables and how it pumps the fuel charge around! Freaking awesome hobby and it’s definitely helped me have some fun and stay mechanically invested on a motor to get the better version and there’s some very cool stuff to be discovered while you are tinkering around with your latest version or just not getting what you want and you jump back and try something a little different to see what results that will give you and how much more performance you’ll get! I’ve gotten to a place where I’m not interested in getting more power… I’m interested in efficiency and I’ve been going to the 48mm bore engine to see what I can reduce and conserve and I’m as interested in my fuel mileage as I’m into the power needed to spin the bar solid and do that as efficiently as possible and it’s just a little fine line where you can get the power out of it but you aren’t just blowing fuel mixture out your muffler but you can work comfortable with no wasted fuel or money… efficient is my world!!! I’m just a weird duck and I’m not dancing to anyone’s drum but my own and those drums around me that I like! 😂😂😂
Howdy Mr. Tinman, always learn on here, not to much into the port and.timing stuff,I just put them together and run them, wouldn't mind getting 1 of them pipes for a 372 or 390 or 394 but love your knowledge, good stuff, pleasure sierra.John!!!
Really watching this as I have a 372 coming. With the pop up you were talking about the fuel pattern and how the pop up will change it, I thought I watched where either IronHorse or you filed the edge of the piston to help with that. Am I wrong on that?? Instead of changing the transfer angle?? Again great content.
The other major point is that single ring piston is just so much better for me then the double is! Less heat buildup and way more lubrication throughout the entire process that I’ll grab the single ring piston every time! That’s why I’m a 371xp fan and I’ll definitely never not be! Mine’s been a loyal partner for 25 years and it’s still beautiful inside because we are always looking out for each other and we are always looking to make it happen but don’t get in a hurry and loose your original objectives and your way! Just never have experienced anything else that is half as exciting as pulling over a project for the first time and having that bark to life experience with it where you know that it’s alive and it’s a great sounding hit!!!
Dude you have just said the absolute exact same thing that I’ve been saying for years! We are all a little different and we like what we like and it’s just a little different results from builder to builder or saw to saw and you definitely are going to have a better quality experience if you are trying some different things and you’ll just do your own thoughts and ideas and get your own personal experience and it’s something that you have built yourself! I guess I can appreciate having a couple saw’s that other dudes that I appreciate have put their time into but I definitely would much rather spend the money for a couple of different cylinder’s and make some different version’s so I can get what I like then pay another dude that $600 or whatever they are charging to tighten my screws for me! LMFFAO! Having you own saw’s and knowing those little differences between a couple of saw’s is the joy of this whole deal in my mind! Yes, I would definitely love to have a couple of other dudes or shops stickers slapped onto a favorite saw would be a cool little piece… actually making a little loop around the universe like that Buckin road trip and getting to drink a cup of coffee and share your absolute best failures is what I’m talking about! When you have just finished up a good feeling little ripper and then you find a Cir-Clip in your magnet tray and you are trying to remember if??? LMFFAO! I’ve definitely opened up a couple that I thought I’d missed something and I definitely have omitted a clip or two! LMFFAO!
Hi tinman I have a question what’s the easiest way to get more power out of my 372 with out grinding a lot on the transfers I’m a tree climber not a saw porter so my skills aren’t that good yet and all I have is a dremel do you think widening the exhaust with base gasket delete and piston work will make it rip a little better?
I was thinking what difference that windowed piston has versus the non windowed. it should make the case compression different. would that allow the longer intake duration.

No free rides just a little give and take. Interesting to see this one take shape, Awesome video Tinman ✊️
Thankyou for helping out!! I appreciate you
I started laughing when I realized you were standing in the woodpile starting up a chainsaw… and it had no bar & chain;-D. Runs great though!
Runs very good, I salut the approach to experimental research by using mixed parts and different numbers.

Tinman I like these videos a lot! Also if you just leave the carb and intake on the cylinder it might be less fumbling and less chance for an air leak

Finger port it? You have a piston that kinda allows it. Then again wouldnit make enough charge to make use of them?
Nice video tinman ❤❤
Make you asembally of the carb gaskets are correct , I did the same thing and had the same issue
I was thinking what difference that windowed piston has versus the non windowed. it should make the case compression different. would that allow the longer intake duration.
Great video! When are you going to get back to the 268? Loving the 371 stuff, but waiting on some of the other projects you got going.

Hey mate, wondering if you can recommend me a model of saw, I'm after something that's between 70-80cc and can handle a 25" bar?

@@tinmanssaws should I be looking for an early or late model 372xp?
How's Tinman and the family doing
Doin great buddy!!
Hey Tinman im look for really good bearings for my 560/562 what do you have for me?
Oem bearings from husqvarna are your only options on the 5 series saws

Hey tinman would you be interested in toying with my pioneer p42
I like 21-24 squish myself on the 50mm single ring setups. I agree if your running 18k squish longevity is declining quickly.
