He spoke out strongly for human rights and his work in bringing about the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel is one of the major accomplishments of his administration. Walter Cronkite once said that of all the Presidents that he has interviewed that he regarded Carter (a 1946 Naval Academy graduate who later served as an officer on the Navy's first nuclear submarines) as one of the smartest.

He did not fire the Air Traffic Controllers nor did he kick old people 55 and older off of welfare knowing that there were no jobs for them (Who was going to hire a 55 year old person) President Carter did not do these things Ronald Reagan did. Brokered a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. Advocated and championed for human rights throughout his public life and retirement. Was a relatively middle of the road old school Democrat who appealed to both parties. The last of a dying breed.
This man was ahead of his time! He was the 1st President to put solar panels on the White House and President Regan took them off. Now just about everyone going solar!!
A very good man, to be sure. But a strange person at the same time. Nevertheless, Carter seemed to be the proverbial bridge needed during an historical transition. The transition being the conclusion of divisiveness brought on by the Vietnam & Watergate era towards the more positive and somewhat more uplifting national mood of the eighties' Reagan years. Carter's time in the White House could arguably be considered a period of political healing, but it was also a time of deep economic malaise coupled with national aimlessness. I think it was good he only served one term.
