The song was written by the Soviet composer Mark Fradkin, based on a poem of the same name by Yevgeny Dolmatovsky. Originally, the song was published in the state newspaper "Red Army" under the titles of "The Road Song" and "Bryansk Street". The song catalogues the Red Army's journey throughout the major cities of the Eastern Front - Oryol, Bryansk, Minsk, Kiev, Brest, Lvov, Lublin, Warsaw, and finally, Berlin. Unlike most Soviet and Russian songs of the period, this song is uncharacteristically upbeat, and features a happy melody in order to communicate the certain defeat of Germany and the triumph of communism.

Funny fact: Bryanskaya street does exist in Oryol, and Minskaya street does exist in Bryansk.
