I was a Platoon Non Commissioned officer in the fight for the 47th Brigade. I remember attacking non stop running out of ammo returning to my Ratel callsign 23 getting new mags and storming forward again. Some of my platoon ran with LMG's next to the river shooting at groups of enemy. This started early morning and stopped before nightfall. The 47th Brigade was decimated. We had two brilliant leaders Maj Dawid Lotter our company commander and LT Col Bok Smit the commander of 61 Mech.

This is the first time I have heard an SA commander talk of the importance of Stingers in keeping the MIGs out of the fight.

Very interesting. If I have not got my facts wrong Dudley Wall was involved in some of those battles mentioned in the interview. I do not know what rank he had then, but I am sure Duds would clear up this one soon. Very well done Tony, thanks.

Those G5 howitzer of South Africa shot them (Cuba, MPLA etc) to bits. Our SF guys were sitting high up in trees serving F/O and directed the G5 155mm right on target. They (Cuba, MPLA etc) went looking for them but just could not find them (SF South Africa).
Savimbi informed his soldiers that were looking after SF that he would shoot them personally if they let anything happen to the F/O which were SF guys due to the critical rol they played.
I know the one SF guy had a call of mother nature and then he hid from them and they (UNITA) nearly had heart attacks due to his disappearance. Apparently they did not find it funny lol!!!
I am not 100% sure now but one of our 155mm howitzer took out one of these massive Russian cargo planes while it was waiting to get airborne.
One of my friends died during this operation. He was an Infantry man.
