Making me spend more money...but at least this seems worth it. Picked up a cheap fresnel and hate how inefficient it is. Love how clean of a spot this makes with minimal leaks! Thanks for this video!
Shoulda just shot that light straight into the neighbors house! neighbor wife - "Honey! Wake up the aliens are here!!!" neighbor husband - "No. That's just Tommy, he got a new toy today."
Oh man. They already put up with enough haha - When I was playing with my potato cannon while my wife was out of town.. the neighbors actually did text my wife, who then called me and told me to stop scaring the neighbors. Lol
Tommy. Nice video. Nice sound. What is your sound rig. I did see your boom mic for a moment. And I note that you have a bit of damping applied to the walls. Cheers. . . DJ
This light is looking more & more like a Leko. Can you ask Aputure to develop different bowen’s mount options for lenses & irises? These LEDs are the future, accessories make them more versatile. Is there a tungsten option available as well, 300t?
They’ve developed a Leko mount and are releasing it soon, perhaps at NAB. I don’t believe there’s a tungsten option but that won’t stop you from using gels
Great video man! I really need to invest in lights more but I need them to be more portable. Do you have any recommendations on portable video lights? :)
@@TommyCallaway Thanks! Will check that one out. It would be really cool to see you do a video/photo kit video or something similar, maybe at different price points as well? I've just been buying stuff off Amazon :)
May I ask what's the difference between grids and fresnel lenses please? Also would you get a different light quality if you attach the fresnel to a continuous light than a strobe?
A grid will be less "focused" / have a softer roll off on the edges, while a fresnel will create a much brighter and focused output with a harder edge, closer to a stage spotlight. Also, I've never used a fresnel on a strobe, but the principals would be the same I suppose.
A Fresnel is a flat lens with rows of "jaws" unlike classic light fixture glass which is curved. A Fresnel is more efficient but at the cost of being very soft meaning, you don't get sharp edges/shadows with Fresnel unless you use some "scrims" (metal grids you put in front of the lens). To get an idea, my ETC Fresnel uses 750W HPL lamps but the efficiency of the Fresnel compares to 1000W. Never put a Fresnel lens on a strobe since there is no devices to do so. :) If you need to know anything else feel free to ask.
@@corneliusdobeneck4081 Do we use fresnel with softbox or any diffuser or no need?because as I understand we need softbox for grids? I mean if we need soft light
@@Petramojomusic I'm a bit confused here. Unless you have LED light DO NOT use softboxes on Fresnel lenses since they create a hell lot of heat! You may use gridcloth placed a little infront of a Fresnel. Always check heat though. For clarification: softboxes are white cloth boxes attached directly to the light while grids or gridcloth goes onto a frame with a stand so you can move it around seperatly. But if you need soft light I would choose another light fixture since Fresnels are designed to put out MUCH light.
LOL!!! When you were dangling the batteries around your legs had me dying!!! I was like, he needs to go do some pull ups with those batteries. I’m thinking of getting the 120d ii and light dome. But, I need to see if I should wait to buy the Panasonic S1. Planning to go to NAB again this year to test out some of the new toys that are about to drop to analyze what’s gonna be good for my classroom.
I feel like with the 120d ii you can’t go wrong. It will hold its value so if you don’t like it or need something brighter you can resell it for basically the same price you bought it.
Looking at performance I guess I'm happy I didn't bought into the system and sticked with my heavy, classic ETC Source 4 lights. Looking at the flood/spot of the Apurture Fresnel I'd say its unusable, for certain things. Center spot doesn't look to bad except for the color shift at the rim and the brutal fall of going from say, 100% light to 50% light. Comparing the Apurture 300d to ETC Source 4 Fresnel: the 300d defiantly is more convenient to use on location with its battery pack but when it comes to creative options the 300d goes down the sewer. The ETC S4 Fresnel goes from 20° Spot - 65° Flood - or 9°-52° - (no color shift nor brightness falloff unlike the 300d). The fixture comes with two accessory slots (unlike the 300d with just the Bowens mount) given you a lot of creative options like using gel frames, scrims or barn doors at the same time. The HPL lamps can be replaced within a minute while doing so with the 300d (which probably will not stop working anywhere soon) is quiet an undertaking. The ETC Fresnel comes at a cost of 440-560$ (depending on model) with 2 year warranty while the 300d is at 1000-1200$ (including battery plate, remote ect) with just 1 year warranty. So for 1 300d you get 2 ETC - again giving you more creative options. Maybe get ETC Fresnel and ETC PAR (with interchangeble lenses going from spot to full flood). DOWNSIDES on the ETC Fresnel is its power drain, weight and size, the need for optional expensive dimmer packs (300d is dimmeble by default) if you want to cut down brightness and scrims can't do the job, its intense heat and its more or less stationary character, say a pain if you have to move the lights. Last but not least the ETC are sort of indestructible due to its aluminium housing so IF an accident happens its most likely just the HPL lamp that gets broken unlike the 300d with its thin housing. Customer service at both companies is + excellent! Up to you guys.
YESSS THEY GOT RID OF THOSE DAMN AIR VENTS. The light spill was ridiculous.
Totally agree, so glad they listened!

Thanks for the review. I'm surprised about the color shift, but glad you pointed that out.
No prob! I definitely want to get my hands on a color meter.
@@TommyCallaway They can be expensive, but most camera rental shops have them.
I'm curious if the red cast is apparent with the COB120d.
The opening audio from 0:09 to 0:31 sounds sooooooo good on my audio setup.
I wonder how this would work with the Godox SL-60W?
I saw in one video that yes

Would it work well with Godox lights like the UL150? Thanks
Great video man! I really need to invest in lights more but I need them to be more portable. Do you have any recommendations on portable video lights? :)
For portability, my go to is the Aputure Tri-8c. It’s very bright, bulletproof durable and can be rigged up easily, no ballast and remote controlled.

Is it works with Godox SLB60W ?
What is the distance used from tesla to the 300d?
about 8 feet
How much heavier is the new fresnel?
Roughly twice as heavy. There's more glass in it for focusing the light.
Have you reported the colour cast to aputure?
Thanks
They’ve definitely seen the video, and more than one person has mentioned it. They’re probably aware.
Please hire a new mic, it doesn't know when to move out of the way. Sheesh

Yes. I put it in my latest video at the end.

I sure did!

Buying Aputure light because of high CRI then adding a lens that fks up the CRI haha, how can you even recommend garbage like that?
Is there something better you can recommend because Apeture is so expensive and I need strong strong continuous light?
