The remote reservoir or second oil chambers reason for existing is to provide somewhere for the oil displaced by the piston shaft that moves in and out of the shock itself. Every shock has at least 2 chambers the oil flows between. Prior to the remote design shocks were double walled providing 2 oil chambers. The remote res design reduced the diameter of the shocks... other benefits like higher oil capacity for slower changes in damping from oil temp swings, also had room for cooling fins for further cooling. Without room for the oil displaced by the shaft entering the body the shock will explode, Add a flow control between the two chambers provides a quick way to tune the damping slightly without taking the shock apart first.

Smaller diam shocks mounting can be placed further out towards the tire lowering the ratio which reduced the leverage allowing for longer & lighter springs .
