Get past my non essential discussion around 2:03 or so!
We are going to learn something that I said doesn't exist in Japanese. I might be a huge liar when I said plurals don't exist... or am I?
This video is part of the courses on:
fromzero.com based on the Japanese From Zero! (learnfz.com/JF...) book series written by George Trombley and Yukari Takenaka
Power up your Japanese on FromZero.com (lessons, quizzes, games, ask-a-teacher)
I just realised I kind of miss the blue scissors and the spray can as props. They always used to warm my heart.
This was a superb lesson and now I can ask my sweetie if she wants to meet Mr Elephant.
Eew eew eew eew 😭 I just got to that part
@@sagearviso1979 YO DUDE WASSUP I FOUND YOU AGAIN! IM ON BOOK 3 NOW!
@@Silence-343 YOOOO HIII. DUDE CONGRATS, PROUD OF YOU!! Do you use insta or anything, I want to keep getting updates omg
you're a really good teacher. I'm learning since the start of this series. thanks.
15:16 Someone told me a pretty accurate way of wrapping that concept around your head more easily. "Just think about it as 'me and the boys'" (or in this case "you and the boys").
I love watching this is 2023 and listening to your computer specs and display resolution and how stoked you were with how advanced it was 😂. Don't feel bad, computers were so advanced when I left school that we learned Basic as an elective subject in year 10, so... 😂😂😂😂.
I actually loved the non-essential discussion......
16:50 LMAO I thought I'm watching Vsauce
that's right lol
ikr!!
Thanks, George! I am learning so much with your vids.
he's literally saul goodman.
Thanks for the compliment. He’s a great character.
@@japanesefromzerowhat about saul badman?
18:05 Did you mean anthropomorphise?
Thanks Terry Pratchett! (That's where I first picked it up.)
It's actually personification but uh ye
@@cr1sprarchives408 both works
I just got these magnetic Drum Memory for my new UNIVAC computer :) Thanks for the lessions. One video every day is perfect. Please keep that interval.
By learning a new language, it's enlightening to see the shortcomings of English, like our lack of a modern, pluralized "you".
you guys ?
I used google translate (English to Japanese), I wrote "a woman" in the input box, it displayed the translation, and then I changed "a woman" to "women" ,and it stayed the same!!..I tried the same with Korean, and the result was similar!.
So after a break up I'll go to the doctor and I gonna say "Kokoro dake itai desu (In a kawaii anime voice)" Only my heart hurts haha.
kokoro means heart...
Or you just don't break up... . .. .. . xD
"My kokoro is brokoro."
+Mayakuya. My sensei getting LeiLei. (Laid)
I legit died at that
When you want to say 'children', but 'kids' comes into your head and you end up saying 'childrens' 😂
I heard my name in this video. Cool!!
I highly suggest you use Foobar2000 with your Winamp and get the Milkdrop plugin if you like good responsive visualisations. :)
Would だれもいいませんでした also mean "nobody said anything" or is the「なにも」needed before the 「いいませんでした」like in the example at (12:12)?
you probably know by now but i like to answer for others
だれも言いませんでした = nobody said.
だれも何も言いませんでした = nobody said anything.
Thankyou always for the great videos George!
In the 『にほんじんの ともだちがいいました』sentance, why is ga used? In the lesson talking about "such and such says this" I thought と would be used.
Aw. You missed an opportunity to put a learned kanji in D: 左のみみがいたいです。
@@matteusan What were you trying to ask in those sentences? If that person is fine?
Kyrex i was testing something (i think), idk why i even wrote that a month ago lmao
@@matteusan I must say that I was a bit confused :'D Now that's one mystery solved
16:53 I think, if you say ペンは多いです。or ペンがたくさんがあります。, it is about more than one pen, because of the nearby words. Or if you say 二つペン (I don't know the 助数詞 for ペン), it is not about one pen, but about two.
Thanks for the 助数詞 (counter word), because I didn't know that for long small cylinder like objects like pens, pencils, etc. which is 本 then.
BTW, 二本 sounds like 日本 because they sound the same (also in hiragana: にほん), but not when you use kanji.
Yes, there are some changes iin the reading, especially after/to 三 (3), 六 (6), 八 (8) and 十 (10).
Hans Kamp - Right. Context changes pen to pens. Remember English is the weird language that requires plurals. So just make English do what it needs to do to sound natural.
I was watching this on my break at work while there was a lot of noise around me, and I legit thought you said "I told you there's no such thing as Japanese pornos". I was thinking I don't know where George is going with this, but I won't question his methods. xD
Well, how about such terms like the 'pack' of wolves, or the 'school' of fish, or the 'pride' o lions. Is there a way to translate that to Japanese?
There is one word that covers this むれ works for all of them I think. It's English that has a bunch of weird ways to classify groups.
Thanks for answering that, George-san. So I guess 'no' should be the connector,e.g. 'ookami no mure' or 'raion no mure'?
So like もれ魚ともれ馬
Really confused because my Japanese wife overheard you talking about breaking the rule for using tachi on a dog and she said that you are misunderstood about the rule. She said tachi can be used for all living things. There is no rule to be broken for that.
George you lied to me? then you are gonna tell me there is no Santa and Easter Bunny!
You know, in Spanish, Shin-chan says "Trooompa, troooompa!", literally meaning "elephant's trunk" (perfect translation, I know right), and the vowels fit perfectly for ぞうさん I found that really funny and interesting :)
And you know what ano in Spanish means? Jajajaj
To ask the question of "Where does it hurt?" Can you also ask using で rather than が to ask "Where AT does it hurt?"
どこでいたいですか。
Arthur S で refers to the place where an action is taken. for example,
私は図書館で本を買った。
I bought a book at the library.
で marks the location where the action (of buying the book) happened.
i don't think で can be used in the context of this lesson.
I love my new dot matrix printer. Such a beautiful sound XD
'Intent and purposes' please
All ways entertaining, George. Thanks for all your effort. Think Anthropomorphism is to consider animals with human traits, if that helps.
3:56 Glad to see Im not the only one that misheard that
10:47 So when someone is asking who says it, we can switch と to が?
Not sure if I'm the first one to notice, but the final slide has a typo on the last word :)
そうさん should be ぞうさん.
hyper-threading wasn't a thing until P4 and it sucked when it came out.
1. you wrote そうさんたち 19:44
2. you said both まみこ たち 15:35 and まみこ さんたち 16:14 :
Is it wrong to assume that the 1st one is less polite?
haha you said "of their own fruition"! uh...it's "of their own volition"... totally different and unrelated word. Fruition would be like if I planned something and succeeded at my plan. "My master plan to take over the word has finally come to fruition!"
Since you used コヒー as an example, I gotta seriously ask, why did they Japanify it as コヒー and not コフィー
Isn't it コーヒー?
Or コーフィー?
たち sounds a lot like the english "& co" in its usage
I think it's personification? So basically, anything that is personified can have "tachi" added to the end?
Its 2020 and Iam still using winamp
Thanks, George!
I had to think about こぶしファクトリー・オラはにんきもの when I heard ゾウさん XD such a stupid but cute song... and Oda Sakura (Morning Musume) often says things like ごめんなさい魚さん!... I know too many cute things and people... I need to listen to metal for a while to compensate this cuteness overflow x_X
EDIT: oh... and I remember だけ with the anime 僕だけがいない街... well... I don't need to "remember" it anymore... but I learned it that way... and it's a pretty darn good anime btw!
As a software engineer this intro killed me lmao
8:20 can I use "doko de itai desu ka"
I believe で works as the action location marker - someone has to be doing something there.
Where do I view the streams? Is it on Twitch or somewhere else?
あの犬 だけ が好き です。
if I want to say " I have 7 cats" I would say "neko ga nana in iru" correct? sorry am typing in romaji
You have to use a different counter: 猫がななひきいる。'neko ga nana hiki iru'. It's in lesson 39.
can you repeat the noun twice for plurals? 人々、山々 or its only used in certain cases?
Ori Avitan yep, but you should learn them as separate words.
I learned 人々 a while ago, but it is with the rendaku: ひとびと.
this is not a rule... these are individual words... you can't say 犬々 for example ^^ that doesn't make sense... so as Paolo said... learn them as separate words when you see them...
ty
When and where are the livestreams?
Miso Mar Sub to his Twitter and you'll be notified.
88KeysMan ok thanks
lol Zenith. I had a Zenith TV in the 80's. I googled and they were an American company that's been acquired by LG. Never had a Pacard Bell printer, but I had the computer.. Don't get me started on what I did on it. cough *aol porn*. Way before I was old enough.
At 18:27, I think the word you're looking for is "anthropomorphizing."
Personification?
Without plural : Do you like dog? 犬が好きですか。うん、好きです。犬肉は?
I think the word you were looking for at the end there to describe using tachi with animals or objects was "personification".
Anthropomorphose
That was the reason why my parents didn't allow me to watch Shinchan and I had to settle for Doraemon (loved that too , though
What about Fuji-san? When I first heard Japanese people refer to the mountain as Fuji-san I figured that was a way of respect or glorification for the mountain as a symbol for the country, but then I realized that san is used for any mountain to mean "Mount. blabla", but now after this I'm thinking maybe originally it was exactly like I thought it was?
First part of the video is hilarious. Made you think this video was made in 2000
where i can buy this book?
At www yesjapan.com or www.amazon.com
Hahaha Fernando Gonzalez!
Also, is "ra" only used with pronouns? Bokura, omaera?
Good question. I think that is accurate. I can't think of any other way RA is used おれら、かれら、おまえら.
An adorable charmer!
sweet dreams are made of thisssssssssssss
ラマのお尻を鞭打つのは「Winamp」だ
To any mathematics deniers, the joke's on you because Japanese people couldn't say ショージたち without the Axiom of Choice.
18:02 anthropomorphism.
If zousan can mean, uh, wiener, does zousantachi mean... sausagefest? Herd of elephants, eh. So with tachi the elephants are endowed with human-like properties - or I'm endowed with an elephant-like property. (Zou-san: nice user name.)
CONSTELLA It's a running joke in the anime series where he draws an elephant on his "thingie" and dances. "Zou" does not mean weiner, sadly lol. It would be funny if that were true, though.
Yeah, I got that. Elephant trunk of course. I shouldn't have said 'mean', imply, say. George's stories can be so entertaining.
45 seconds in and my sensei talks about Zenith like its that new new. XD Im done.
I hope I'm not being to forward in asking but George, are you planning on having Mari or Natsuo chan on any future videos? I enjoyed the English to Japanese contrast and interaction as well as play like style in those videos. (Speaking of "play like style") Also would you consider having a tv series done based on your teaching style? I can imagine you and your friends doing a show about learning Japanese like Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo. That is a Japanese comedy I enjoyed on RUclips.
personification - giving inanimate objects human like qualities.
I think the word you were looking for is anthropomorphism :)
I wrote all the kanji I know in a notebook then I lost that notebook
What's my Punishment
Dude how stupid am I I could always just write out all the kanji I know how to write instead of googling them and being like "hey can I write this" ありがとうミスターブラウン!
Wait a minute: Is Napster still around?
Not as a pirate tool. But it is still around.
us.napster.com/
+Learn Japanese From Zero! Are you freaking serious? My 35 year old brother back in the 90s had a Gateway computer using Napster and even I used it then Limewire became a thing. Holy crap
486 computer reporting in!
クレヨンしんちゃんが大好きです
George interesting that you mentioned Shin Chan. Unfortunately the manga creator for Shin Chan passed away a few years ago.
Anthropomorphize lol
- to attribute human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.
lol love you george
"Soy un elephante"
その犬だけが好きです。
俺-ら (おれ-ら)
Georgian Rhapsody
personification? giving human like qualities to an inanimate object
-たち suffix
-達 suffix
Please stop trying to be so pollitically correct all the time. a joke is a joke. I am latino and I don't find it offensive that you or anyone makes a funny idiom sound or mimic. It's ok :)
Subarashi
+Anime Phantom It's obvious you jumped into this serie without watching it in order, seeing how you can't spell 「すばらしい」correctly in romaji.
Oh i meant subarashii sorry didn't see that Im sorry
I thought 学生 ment student!
I believe 生徒 is a young student at school, a pupil really. And not a college student.
Anthropomorphize
-ら suffix

10:15 mimimi :D
Your mimi are good.
Learn Japanese From Zero! Haha thanks :D

George i dont think that was racist but we live in a time where anything can be thought as racist,😗😗
